So to all you Canadians who are going to the show tonight - Enjoy! Have a blast like JPP and I did last Friday. Drink in each moment of the concert. Savor each chord played and each note sung.
SE - If you run into a guy with a red Broken Heart and Dirty Window, his name is Rick Loewen, he bought it from my website. Strike up a conversation! He estimates that over the years he has spent over $3000.00 in tickets and travel to see John. |

Are you wearing all your finest Prinewear, SE? Is Mr. SE wearing his "Crazy As A Loon" shirt? That really made him stand out in a crowd! |

Oooooooh Baby....what a fabulous show!!
...and, we enjoyed every minute of it from second row seats - ya - I know - row 2, seats 3 and 4!! We were so close I could have tied John's shoe laces together if he wasn't wearing his black boots! (not that I would have)!
We're going to be all over the place today, so I can't post much now - but I will tell you more details later. It was just a great time! |

Row 2?!? What fantastic seats! Were you on the Dave side or the Jason side? Tell us all about it! Did jason come out in the lobby afterwards? He did not in Vancouver. They shooed us out of the auditorium, and out of the lobby area toot sweet, forcing us to wait around in the back alley! |

We were in Row 2 on the Dave side - with a birds-eye view of all three.
I don't know if Jason went out to the lobby afterwards or not - we were so close to the stage that we were among the last ones out - so we missed him if he did. We were also among the last ones in - our pre-show evening turned into a bit of a calamity, so we ended up scrambling in at the last minute to get our tickets just as the opening act started.
'Sara Watkins' - I'm glad we didn't miss her. She had my attention before we even got to our seats - opening with a song by one of Canada's National Treasures - Gordon Lightfoot. Along with some really good stuff of her own, she did a great cover of a Jimmy Rodger's tune (Any Old Time), and also of 'Different Drum' - I loved hearing that again. What a beautiful voice and talented musician. Like I said - I'm glad we didn't miss her.
(have to get ready to go now - more later...) |

I didn't take notes or write down the set list, so I hope I don't forget too much. The show was just great!
John told quite a few stories in the first half - I love the stories! He had told us that when he played in Edmonton the other night - George Bush was speaking in a hall across the street from them - then he started to chuckle and said 'we out drew him'. Everyone cracked up and cheered! He said it was George who was responsible for him pulling the next song out of retirement, and played Flag Decal.
He read part of a letter that was handed to him just before the show from a proud Grandma telling about her little Prine fan grandchildren - and that the 3 year old could sing every word of Fish 'n' Wistle from memory. John paused and said 'I'm hoping I can do the same' and the whole place just howled! Then he did, and he dedicated it to her and her grandchildren. What a treasure of moment for them.
The night went by way too fast - he played a few songs I don't remember hearing at a show for years like Crooked Piece of Time and Saddle in the Rain.
And for all you wardrobe watchers - John was wearing black jeans, a dark polo, and a jacket. He took off his jacket and popped the top button of his shirt just before he sang 'Ain't Hurtin' Nobody'. I don't know if one of the guys said something to him or if he just particularly enjoys that song - but he was grinning and looking like he knew something funny that nobody else did - it was contagious!
(I'll finish the rest later today.) |

OK, now for what's left of my 'I Remembers' from Friday nights show.
Like I said - it was great - and it all went by too fast - but I knew it would - so I was going to take tons of pictures to record the moments that might jog my memory later. That was the plan - but we only snapped one picture and one of the the 'Camera Nazi's was all over us - so we took no more. (She was actually very nice about it)
'Lake Marie' just blew us away - as always - but the end got me again! John did this same thing, or something similar at Red Rocks too - after he says 'Oh baby, we gotta go now...' he says something like 'you're my brown eyed girl .... toppa the world ma .... wake up little Suzzie'. Any body know what that means? It felt like it meant something - maybe just for him though.
Any way - when they came back for an encore - we had no idea what a treat we were in for. John brought Sara back out with them, and they did 'Inspite of Ourselves' ... WOW! It was great! She's not Iris - but she holds her own beautifully - and they sounded great together, too. Right after that, they shared 'The Late John Garfield Blues' - which was awesome, and then closed with 'Paradise'. (... I gave the little wave from JPP)
We were standing about 5 minutes at least before the isle would let us in to leave, and I was watching the crew scramble around packing things up, and I wondered just which one might be Faddy or Eric...and should I ask one of them if it might be possible to meet John Prine...and then one of them glanced over and just smiled politely ... and I turned on a dime, grabbed my hubs arm and never looked back! Wooooo - that was close! ha ha!
And that was it.
BUT... the next day after a run out to the lake to finish a few things - we were driving back to the city listening to the football game on the radio, and the wildest thing happened. During the post-game show, Knuckles and Jeff Courier (the sports-casters) started talking about John Prine at Pantage's the night before! Unprecedented in a post game show - they ONLY talk football... ALWAYS! It was a shake-your- head, did-I just-hear-that kind of moment! I thought it was cool enough to share with you all, anyway. (and they said good things about him, too!)
The End. |

Thanks for the run down, SE. I always enjoy hearing other people's experience at John's shows. What great seats! It is so fun to be up close and personal, to see all the expressions close up.
Did Sarah come out in the lobby and sign her CD's? She is so pretty. And takes the time to talk to everyone.
Sounds like the post game show guys are Prine fans, too, and appreciate a good show. You are so lucky to hear "In Spite Of Ourselves. For some reason, probably time, it was omitted from the Vancouver show. Faddy has the black beard and wears his baseball cap backwards often. Is that the "smiler"? Eric is clean shaven with sideburns. |

I don't know if she made it out to the lobby - she could have - but it took us forever to get there ourselves so she may have come and gone already by that point. I didn't realize before hand that she was 'the girl' from Nickel Creek - I just didn't make the connection. Duh - one of my favorite songs is 'Jealous of the Moon'. |

Did she end her set with "Long Hot Summer Day"?
What calamity happened before the show that delayed you getting there? Car accident? Slow service at a restaurant? Dog sitter cancelled at the last minute? Tell us SE - we have enquiring minds and need to know! |

Thank you SE for giving the paradise wave. It means a lot to me.
In Vancouver, - I did not get shoooed out as CC did. I left accordingly and while walking up the aisle, a fine gentleman said to me - twenty after twelve, back alley. I do not know who he was, a young man.
I returned to the hotel room, cracked a beer and waited. 12:15 a.m. I went to the back alley only to find the most dedicated Prine fans, standing in the rain. I do not know if they were thinking of Spain. I had my Prine Hatch Prine, met up with Ben, and CC.

CC - I can't remember if she ended it with 'Long Hot Summer Day' - but she did sing it!
The calamity was just a series of little glitches for us. It started with our youngest needing a ride at the last minute, in the opposite direction and in the middle of rush hour traffic!
Then, when we did get downtown it was nuttier than I'd ever seen in my entire life - everybody and their dogs where down there, and they all must have come in a car alone - there was no where to park - never happened to us in all our 50 plus years - even the best kept secret places were taken. So we ended up parking quite a way from the restaurant - paid $5 to park and then couldn't get in - that never happens either! So we walked all the way back to the car and went somewhere else.
Then - we ran into the same parking thing before the show - NEVER like that before - man it was crazy! So we ended up finally getting a spot about 8 blocks from the Playhouse with about 5 minutes to cover that distance. I haven't moved like that in years! ha ha - but we made it! |

wow.... great rundown of the show SE.... we kind of had a glitches ourself in Kansas City - but thank goodness we only had a block to walk from the hotel to the show - my husband would have been shooting sparks if we ran into such parking problems and crammed jammed streets.
Ahhhhhhh, but it is all so worth it, isn't it? |

Thanks Reeda, and ahhhhh, indeed it is all SO worth it - there's nothing like a Prine show to get you where you want to be!
And thanks again Reeda...for defining our husband's reactions to those 'glitches' as 'shooting sparks'. I deleted so many overly descriptive paragraphs in my search for those exact words...'shooting sparks'! {...and, was it you who also described giving birth as 'just passing wind'?}
