Nashville, I gotta go back -a short
pictoral by the webmistress
From: Jack
John's lovely bride has a very good voice. Mrs. Prine came out to sing the encore in
skintight black leather jeans and a fire engine red halter to do the Prines' rendition of Til
A Tear Becomes a Rose and it was beautifully done, no doubt. Well she certainly
sounded good singing with "the old man." <grin> But it did seem as tho she
was a little uncomfortable onstage -- she stood back from the mike stand and would lean in
to sing her parts then step back again when done. Ol Johhny was in high heaven tho and why
not? Singing a wonderful song with your lovely wife. Hey what's not to like? It gave JP a
joke opportunity too. He said how they'd met in Dublin and he'd "learned she could
sing from listening to her sing while she learned he couldn't sing from listening to his
albums." Drew a good chuckle. I think that she has been around Iris allot... and has
picked up her mannerisms. I got to witness the Ryman soundcheck and Fiona stood back and
watch Iris and John sing, like she was kind of studying her.anyway....she really is and
Irish Spitfire and seems to be as comfortable in her skin as a chameleon.
CHICAGO FLEADH FEST
FROM: Brent Stewart
the saturday fleadh was a mud pit. fortunately, john was playing on the VH-1 stage that
was surrounded by concrete. i think john was supposed to start about 7:30, but
things got far behind because of technical difficulties, so he was an hour late going on.
there was about a 45min wait between his set and the last set. the crowd (who by that time
had drank a lot of guinness) was very unhappy, and i think even a couple of cups got
thrown at security. when john came on, the reception was incredible. he was
accompanied by jason on guitar and phil on accordian, mandolin, and keys, and David
Jacques on bass. he started out with "spanish pipedream" then
"picture show," "souviners," "angel from montgomery,"
"all the best," fish and whistle," "grandpa was a carpenter" solo
set included "dear abby," "illegial smile," and "sam stone,"
they did a rockabilly number i'm not sure of and ended with "lake marie."
(i might have left out a few songs, or gotten them in the wrong order.) the crowd
response was incredible. everybody was singing along to every song. he comented on it a
few times saying "you guys sing better than i do." once, after repeated
technical problems with his guitar he said "i should have been a drummer."
the sing along aspect of the show was very special. john was loving it. he
kept walking to the edge of the stage while picking, posing like a rock star!
great show, the highlight of the fest!
