On The Road With Wog - insightful and detailed review

jp1fan's thoughts on the show

FROM: Joe T
I finally have time to let you know that my seven year old son enjoyed his first ever concert, which was John's appearance at Indianapolis. He came away from there with a new favorite song, Lets Talk Dirty In Hawaiian. I just wanted to share this experience with you. ...

FROM: Bradness
I went to the Indianapolis show with my sister (it was hard to find anyone willing to travel 220 miles on a Thursday for a concert, even John Prine!). That was their loss. I had seen him in Peoria back in 97 and it was another great show. I had seats farther back, but there is NO bad seats at a John Prine concert! We were running late and only caught the duet from the opening act. The only bad thing about the evening was the people sitting near us must have been from the college where the concert was held and had nothing better to do. They didn't applaud for a single song and only responded to Illegal Smile (for obvious reasons). Even so, a lot of people who were just there for a show ended up buying John Prine CD's in back after the show. That's a good thing! John never came out after the show, but Jason knew people in the audience and came out to meet them. We got a chance to shake his hand and say thanks for a great show before security ran everyone out.

HOT DAMN! How was I to know that when I purchased tickets for this concert, back in May that the PRINE GOD's were a smiling on me 10 rows back, aisle seat, center stage. WOW! It was if he was there just for me (and the other 3,199 hardcore fans in attendance). Nanci was great, have to add her to my list of favorites, she had to play a couple extra songs (JP was late in returning from a rib dinner) then she started their duet then JP came out and sang with her. >intermission< JP  started his show (damn can't remember what song it was,"where have all my brain cells gone" that oughta be a title for a song) anyways he pounded the hell out of his guitars, if he didn't sing a word it was worth it just watching his hands perform their magic on those poor guitars which were good for about two songs before it needed be taken backstage and retuned. The only string casualty was during the encore performance of PARADISE, the lady in front of me, after the first five songs said it was annoying to hear me sing all the songs. She musta been infuriated when every body started singing a couple songs later, JP even lost his place one time during "ITS A BIG OLE GOOFY WORLD" when he sang "I wished I had a woman that made my knees knock" , a small group of women shouted "RIGHT HERE JOHN".

Hey EVERYBODY WANTS TO FEEL LIKE YOU! I thought it was really cute that those ladies up front [near Mark] made John blush and pause so. He was so energetic. As he sang you could see that he had "WHEELS,.... TURNING INSIDE OF ME..." working! Hell, Helen Keller could see that!! Those wheels are definitely what's been keeping him going! That was such a great show! One thing I did noticed, is he didn't light up a cigarette and was drinking bottled water. He was drinking and burnin' up the smokes at the LOST DOGS tour. It's really great that he is getting healthier. He deserved a four out of four stars. Our local critic gave him three and a half. There are two kinds of folks, John Prine fans, and well....you folks know... later

What can I say about the concert?? At this point I am speechless and that is something that doesn't happen too often. Seriously though...it was FANTASTIC, and my girlfriend is still talking about it and probably will for days to come. This was a thrill of a lifetime for me and it will be a great memory to put in my book of memories. I enjoyed his show in Indy and it was my very first time. He is the greatest! (Nanci wasn't bad herself what we heard of her...)

I have seen him twice now (Live on Tour in '97) and this one was way better than the last one. For starters, at the last one, Los Lobos opened and believe me, NG smoked them. That was great all by itself. Seeing John Prine is such an emotional experience for me--my husband got the tix as my birthday gift and I don't think he realized how much it meant (until the show was over and I still hadn't stopped crying) When you have listened to an artist as talented as John Prine ever since your parents played his stuff (and sang it to me) as a baby, seeing him in person is a dream come true. What I want to know, though, is what a girl has to do to get a picture, see him, you know--th psycho fan stuff??!!  And the women that yelled, "Right here, John"?? I only wish it were me!

It was as good as always! Third time I've seen John here in Indiana and it is always the same, just plain GREAT! Last night's audiance was the rowdiest I've seen at a Prine show. At the end of every song they began YELLING requests. Hint: You don't have to yell SAM STONE!, SAM STONE! over and over all night long, believe me.... it's coming! The crowd was also part of the funniest moment of the evening. During "Big 'Ol Goofy World" when John sings "wish I had a woman, who'd make my knees knock" about four women yelled out in perfect unison... "right here John". The crowd when crazy, laughing and clapping, John just smiled and kept struming waiting for us to calm down. He picked up where he left off and kept going.
