Kathy47's
a$$ kicking foot stomping review......
FROM: Del Gillette
A short review of JP's concert at the Guthrie in Mlps. MN on May 17. Excellent!! Hadn't
seen him live since the mid 70's also in Mpls. I lived up there from 1970 to 1982.
It was just him and another guitar and a bass. Did LOTS of old tunes. Opened with Spanish
Pipedream and closed with Lake Marie. It was comsumate Prine.
FROM: 'D'
Hi! I was at John's concert in Minneapolis last night! Incredible! Amazing! I love this
talented man!
FROM: Fishman aka Terry Fish:
Have to say one of the BEST yet..John was on... big time!!! His next album cover should
" Prine..like Wine " Cuz he does get better with time..He looked great after
going through everything he's gone through. John, Jason and David were awesome..and
to top off all of that...I got a great pic with Jason and David..PLUS*** the BIG BONUS a
personalized autograph on my T-shirt from the John himself.. it's summertime in MPLS
and "all the snow has turned to water" until LaCrosse..
FROM Dave Hunter:
John was in great form at the Guthrie, his voice sounding less throaty and gurgly, less of
a "smoker's" voice. My brother in law, who
likes Metallica, etc., was even impressed by the show. I've been a big a fan of his
since my high school days, the first time I saw him in concert was in 1974 (at a college
in St. Paul). Every time I see JP, I always walk out making a mental list of the songs he
didn't play, trying to prioritize them in a little wish list. This time, it was
Christmas in Prison, Storm Windows and Speed of the Sound of Loneliness. Does he
ever play The Great Compromise anymore? Just once, I would like to catch him in the
holiday season, so I can hear him play Silent Night All Day Long.
One little note to Kathy47: You were in the heart of Minneapolis that night, not
even close to St. Paul (parts of which really are a jungle).
FROM DEB M:
I am proud to say I did see John last night at the Guthrie in Mpls. Mn. Wow!
How can this guy get better every time I see him? Unbelievable. A true artist and a legend
in his own time. My brother got the tickets this time, maybe you know him, he sent in a
picture of him and John. Terry Fish? Anyway, have a great time (which I know you will) and
maybe the next tour I'll make to Lake Marie. Thanks for your help. Deb M.
FARGO THEATER, FARGO ND, MAY 15,
1999
FROM Rick Loewen:
Wow! just went to the prine concert in fargo, n.d. it was fantastic.
so, here's what happened. 3 of my friends and i were staying at a hotel just a block
from the theatre. so we wandered over there just before sound check. one of the
roadies (all of them very friendly) told us that john wouldn't allow us in the theatre for
sound check. but when he pulled up i asked him if he would mind us sitting in on the
sound
check. he said, "no, not at all. i'll send someone out to get you
in a few minutes." sure enough, after a couple of minutes a roadie came out and
said, "where are the winnipeg fans?" so we went in and he played six or
seven songs just for us. (well, that's what it seemed like anyway) it was
awesome. the rest of the day was a blur. the concert was anticlimactic after
that. but it was still an unbelievable concert. he really rocked it up toward
the end. and his two guys - david and jason - backed off a few times to let john do
some of his real slow ballads by himself. (ie. spend the night with me, hello
in there.) Just a great event altogether. looking forward to seeing him when he
comes back up to winnipeg, mb. canada.
BELLE MEHUS CIVIC AUDITORIUM, BISMARCK,
ND MAY 14, 1999
FROM: Pam in Bismarck:
It was the night of all nights. Been a John Prine fan since I was a prepubescent! The
atmosphere was electric. The presence of such fine artists was spine-tingling.
"Souvenirs" always brings me tears--anyway, it did on May 14 in Bismarck. Good
friends, 8 of us, got together and jammed before and after. We knew you'd love us, too!!!
"Come back, baby, come back!"
FROM Bill Stadnyk:
Just thought I would tell you we saw the show in Bismarck ND on Friday and it was super.
John was in great form and his backup players were excellent. He put on a 2 hr show and
dynamite all the way. Hope we can see him again sometime.
