A seemingly giddy John Prine played before a packed house Saturday
night at Mobile's Saenger Theater. Mr. Prine made the comment that the last time
he played in Mobile was twenty years ago and his good friend Steve Goodman
performed with him. The audience held no grudges for his much delayed return to
the city by the bay. The audience cheered to such favorites as "Angel from
Montgomery", "Dear Abbey", and "Illegal Smile".
Also an unannounced Iris DeMent was a pleasant surprise that any
"folkie" could appreciate.
I think the highlight of my evening was hearing John perform one of my favorites
"Lake Marie". John creatively incorporated the lyrics with the close
of his set singing, "aaaaah baby, we gotta go now."
Iris DeMent returned to the stage with John for the encore performance and added
a perfect duet / harmony vocal to "Unwed Fathers", "Sabu",
and "Paradise". They wrapped up the tour with the appropriate holiday
classic "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus".
As John was leaving the stage with a standing ovation, he waved and
apologized to a very enthusiastic crowd, "I'll try not to stay away so
long!"
Thanks for a terrific show John!

I saw the mobile Alabama show and it was awesome. Prine was in great form and
seemed to be having a really good time. I hope it's not another 27 years before
he comes back. After the show, I got to go backstage and meet Mr. Prine. He
signed autographs and talked with everyone there. He's a great guy...really
friendly. I'm a fan for life

A beautiful venue, a great show. Todd Snider opened, then John started with
"Spanish Pipedream" and several songs from his very early years,
"Far from Me", "Fish and Whistle", "Souvenirs",
"6 o'clock News", "Donald and Lydia", almost everything on
the new Souvenirs album. Midway through the show, he brought out Iris DeMent for
several duets from "In Spite of Ourselves". Iris was not billed, so it
was a real bonus to see her! The highlights of the show for me were a really
moving duet of "Unwed Fathers" with Iris, duet with Fiona and finale,
"Paradise" with everyone.

This was one of the best of all the Prine shows I have seen in twenty
plus years; he sang "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" about half way
through the show; they set up a second mike on stage and Iris DeMent came out
and sang four songs from the Duets record; Mrs. Prine joined him for the first
song of the encore; the wife commented that he just looks like he is having a
good time playing for us; as always he made it seem like he was just a buddy in
your living room with you who happens to know a few songs; I hope it isn't too
long before he is back in Birmingham

WOW, what a show!!!! I was in awe the whole evening--had GREAT seats--4th row to
the right of the stage. Todd Snider opened and put on a great show. John started
his set with Spanish Pipedream (my personal favorite) and it only got better
from there. He played till 10:30 ---maybe later--I really didn't look at my
watch... I couldn't begin to give a setlist, simply because I was to engrossed
in the show to write anything down and my memory is not real good....but he did
a lot of his older stuff... and to make the night even better--he brought Iris
Dement with him---she did four songs with him ---WOW---my boyfriend is in love
with Iris and I am in love with Todd, so we both were drooling---and we both
love John's music, so we were happier than pigs in shit (an appropriate Alabama
comparison) When John finally said good night--and came back for an encore, he
brought Fiona out for a song--then he brought everyone out, including Todd and
Iris to do Paradise!! Wow!! What a show.
