COLORADO SHOWS
PARAMOUNT THEATRE, DENVER 9/22
- FROM: Proud Priner Dave Cordle
Heyyyyy how lucky, can one man get??? I saw the show in Cheyenne on Thurs.
night, which was a treat in and of itself. Then I get to go to Denver Friday
night and see another show. I was impressed with the show in Cheyenne and
words can hardly describe how impressed I was with the show in Denver. First
off Todd Snider put on another impressive performance. It's hard to believe
all the people I heard who were saying things like...."Who's Todd
Snider?? Where'd he come from?? I've never heard of this guy??....And then
after he played, it was like....That guys great!! I need to buy some of his
music!! He's great!! And that he is. I know that Todd picked up a lot of new
fans in Denver Friday night.....And then John takes the stage and all hell
breaks loose. I think a lot of people have been waiting for John to come to
Denver for a long time....It was a great show is almost an understatement.
To clinch the evening, when John introduced Iris, I personally almost went
wild...It was the last thing that I, or anyone else for that matter,
expected. Now, I want everyone to know that I love John Prine, and I really
appreciate the fact that he made a go of it the night before and he did a
duet with John Prine singing both parts of "In Spite of
Ourselves." However, it's just not the same without Iris. The woman
sings like an angel, and she seems very humble on stage. I'm so glad I got
to see this show with Iris and I wish I could personally thank John for
getting her to Denver. Like I said early on, I really believe that myself
and all the fans at the Denver show are the lucky ones for getting the added
surprise of Iris Dement. The only thing personally that I didn't like about
the show...and again I say personally....the yelling and screaming
"during" the songs is not to my liking. I say "give 'em
hell" between songs, but let me listen to John and only John during
songs. A little bit of hollering during a song is from time to time alright,
but it almost seemed like a few people were having a contest to see how loud
they could be. But enough of that...It was a great show non the less, and I
want the whole Prine world to know it.......thanks again John....I'll see ya
next time....
- FROM:Eddie (walking on thin air) W
WOW!!! Last Sunday I split my left index
fingernail (probably won't be able to play guitar comfortably for a couple
of weeks), yesterday I had to pay $900.00 to have my car fixed, yesterday I
found out for sure I am diabetic, yesterday it rained and was in the forties
all day, today it has snowed all day, we have about 2 inches on the
deck.....am I upset? Heck no because yesterday John Prine came to Denver.
But first Todd Snider, what a performer, I had never
heard his music before but he had me hooked on the first song, I'm not sure
of the title it had the lines:" …nothing to lose" and
"can't complain" He sang 45 Miles, Out of Control?, Horse Shoe
Lake, Just In Case, his song about going to Seattle to play in a grunge band
who's gimmick was to refuse to play anything (very funny tune) and Keep Your
Hands Off My Daughter (one I'm going to learn) and one or two others, I've
got his CD on my list of things to buy.
Then at about 9:00 MDT John Prine, Jason Wilbur and David
Jacques took the stage, John didn't leave it (except for the `encore' break
until a little after 11:00, or 28 songs later.
The big surprise of the evening was Iris Dement. Her duet
with John on Unwed Mothers was for me the highlight of a pretty bright
evening. The band, Jason Wilbur and David Jacques was outstanding, David's
bowing the big bass fiddle on Angel From Montgomery and Hello In There was
eerie but beautiful and Jason's guitar playing was perfect, as was Johns.
John's voice was great while he was singing; a little froggy while talking
though, consequently there weren't long introductions to the songs. He
played every song with either his Martin or the Gibson J-200. I really
enjoyed Bear Creek; I had only heard of it from the list and was surprised
at the song, not your typical Prine song, but we surely enjoyed as did John
and the boys.
My only disappointments on the evening were: 1) people
who feel it necessary to whoop and whistle in the middle of songs such as
Hello In There, Angel From Montgomery etc, doing that at the beginning and
end of the song I understand, but.... 2) we were made to leave the
auditorium about a half hour after the show was over. We were told John
wasn't going to do a meet and greet, but after that show I don't blame him.
I was just disappointed that he wasn't going to sign my 25-year-old John
Prine Songbook. (We noticed last night that the price on the book is $3.95
(that's a pretty old book). I also noticed when John came back on for the
encore and when he left he was limping. I hope that is nothing too serious.
Iris was fantastic and John surely seemed to light up
when singing with her. My wife and I both noticed her shyness and hesitancy
to take the microphone. But her contributions to the show were fantastic
especially on Unwed Mothers. Well I need to go now, there is about 3- 4
inches of snow on the deck now (that seems to be the preferred method of
measuring snow here) but I don't mind cause: the finger will heal, the car
is now set for another 100,000 miles, I can treat the diabetes and the rain
and snow will eventually stop and next week it will be in the 70's again,
and most importantly last night me and my best girl, Annie, had another
chance to see and hear the best sing/songwriter on the planet, John
Prine!
Oh yeah, here's the set
list.
