MINNESOTA SHOWS

ORPHEUM THEATRE 9/30/00
  • FROM: Sue Mac
What a show! My first time seeing JP live, but I've been listening and loving his music for years. I remember lauging at the silliness of Dear Abby when I was a kid, listening to my uncle sing (aka, Euromac to JPShrine readers). One of the amazing things about JP's music is its ability to touch everyone. I took a good look at the audience before the Minneapolis concert began and saw young, purple and pink-haired punk-rock kids sitting next to old farmers in their plaid flannel shirts and jeans. I don't imagine many other musicians could appeal to such a diverse crowd. JP sings about all the silliness and seriousness of being human. He played for over two hours, brought Iris DeMent out for a few, and I loved every minute of the show. Thanks John!

To be short and sweet - it was absolutely the best!! I had never seen JP live before and knew it would be great but I underestimated JP maybe slightly...Never again though. John was first-class, the sound was crystal clear (as were the double rum and cokes) ...great times, great people, great city...the guitars came out before and after the show and if JP would have allowed, during too. I do have to say sorry to John for my brother pulling out his harp during "Souvenirs" but the vibes were just all there I guess...We even bashed out a little version of "Fish and Whistle" at the little pub next door to the Orpheum theatre before the show, until the bartender cranked up the tunes on the stereo...Paul Thorne opened for JP and he was a real appropriate opening for John, I thought. Some amusing songs right up our alley. One was called "Joanie the Jehovah's witness stripper". It was a great time.. thx to Minni. - thx to JP for a great weekend. "Come on baby spend the night with me"...Oh, PS sorry also about the corner of that downtown building on Hennepin Ave...when they send have a good time and leave a mark on Minni ...I thought they meant....nevermind..to much info..later.....

It was awesome! We had never been to the Orpheum before & were blown away by it's beauty & sound! Paul Thorn was great; very talented & funny & got the crowd pumped. John came out around 9; opened w/ Spanish Pipedream but you'll have to forgive me for the lack of proper order because he played for about 2 1/2 hours straight! Dear Abby, Sam Stone, Illegal Smile sing-a-long, Grandpa Was A Carpenter, Souvenirs, Angel From Montgomery, Sins of Memphisto (my 4-year-old daughter's favorite!) That's The Way That The World Goes Round, etc. etc. Awesome surprise was when Iris Dement came out! They did Jet Set, In Spite of Ourselves, & another funny one from the duet album. She has such a powerful voice! My personal favorite surprises of the evening were Jesus The Missing Years & Please Don't Bury Me. Words can't describe Iris & John doing Unwed Fathers...pure magic! I missed John's ramblings between songs but think he might have been resting his voice. Pre-encore was Lake Marie...then brought Iris out for Sabu & Paradise. You missed a helluva show!
