I GOT EXCITED JUST BEING PART OF THAT SCENE
REVIEWS OF THE
JOHN PRINE IN NORTH CAROLINA SHOWS
- GREENSBORO COLISEUM WAR MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM,
9/8/00
FROM: Frank
This was another great show! John came out as loose as I've ever seen him. He
was in this show all the way through and he really seemed to enjoy it. His voice
seemed to be going but he did a great job. Todd Snyder was a great opening act.
- OVENS AUDITORIUM, CHARLOTTE, 3/3/00
FROM: Satch
I saw from the fourth row. I
first saw John in 1975 and countless times since. This was one of the best ever.
Someone sitting three seats across from us was very drunk and being very rude
and disruptive. John looked at him and told him to get his own show. When this
didn't work, two songs later John looked at him and told him to "shut the
hell up" which resulted in a standing ovation from the crowd. The security
people then escorted the drunk from the building. The next song was
"We're not the jet set" and Iris got so tickled at John's response to
the drunk that it took three tries to get the song started. It was obvious they
were both really enjoying themselves. I am now an Iris deMent fan as well. He is
still as good as he was 25 years ago. The only difference is he didn't smoke a
pack of cigarettes on stage like he did in '75.
- THOMAS WOLFE AUDITORIUM, ASHEVILLE
03/04/00
FROM: Irene
Wow wow wow wow wow wow! Third row seats. Iris DeMent opened for John. John came
on stage by 9:30 and opened with one of my faves, "Spanish Pipedream"
("I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve"). He played
lots of old hits and several from "In Spite of Ourselves." Iris
accompanied him on those. He was personable and upbeat and dove right into
songs. And what great hair. :) It seemed like he was having a great time; he
chatted a little in between songs and the audience interaction was great. The
show was so absolutely fandamntastic! This was the first time I've ever seen
him, and I do hope it's not too long before I see him again!

I saw my first John Prine concert this Saturday night in Asheville. It was
everything I expected and much, much more. Needless to say, I'm hooked! Here's
the setlist as I see it.

Saw John at the Thomas Wolfe theater in Asheville North Carolina on March
4th. He was totally back to looking and sounding 100% prime Prine. I had seen
him in Bristol Tennessee at the Paramount in March and he was great but you
could tell he was not physically over his health problems. But, in Asheville he
played non-stop for two hours and twenty minutes and was awesome! Another sold
out show of course and we all got our moneys worth. His voice is as unique as
ever and I swear his guitar playing is still getting better. Every song was a
highlight but his first encore with Iris Dement singing Unwed Fathers was spine
tingling. I have been a Prine fan for over 25 years and my wife and I were so
proud to have our 24 year old son beside us singing the words to every song, a
new generation of Prine addicts.
