REVIEWS OF THE
JOHN PRINE IN NEW JERSEY SHOWS
SCOTTISH RITE AUDITORIUM, COLLINGSWOOD, 9/15/00
- FROM: THEBIGBLUEDOG
The show suffered from a really piss-poor sound mix and more than
average board screw ups. The stage lighting was like a bad high school play
. The band, on a bright note, was tight and had a nice crowd feel. The crowd
were chromosomal prine-a-philes and everyone seem to enjoy. John's voice was
strong and on during the show and he stayed on stage the entire 2 hour set.
I've seen the man a bunch since the 70's and this one was from the heart and
a good one.

The show was a little weird. The hall was good, intimate, good sight
lines...but, the sound was off. Don't know if it was the hall or the equipment,
but... get to that later.
Todd Snider is an odd dude. He pulls it off though and turned
out to be entertaining. Prine called him out for the encore and even let him
sing a verse.
The song selection was good, a bit subdued probably by
design, but he hit enough "best of" tunes w/a good mix of new and old.
John seemed worn out. His voice was shot, he had little energy and had to sip
water before starting every song. His jokes and quips seemed old, and I think he
knew it. His best line came when he tried to quiet an annoying woman yelling,
"hello in there" (kinda like yelling freebird at a skynyrd show)..he
said, "I know em all".
Now to the equipment. He blows a speaker during Lake Marie,
the only song that was really rocking. Then, he goes off and comes back on like
nothing happened and starts Paradise even though nobody could hear it. (I mean,
nobody). The sound finally came back mid song and the rest was fine.
all in all the show was good, a little subdued and odd.

The venue was old with alot of character and the sound was fantastic.
Oh Boy recording artist Todd Snider came out to open the show and a did a
fantastic job coming back for an encore at the end. The crowd really took to
him. Then John came out, opened with Spanish Pipedream and did one hell of a
show for 2 hours. A fuse blew during Lake Marie but John started Paradise
without the power on and people were wondering what he was doing since no one
could hear anything till they got the technical problem corrected. John sounded
great as usual and commented about playing in the enchanted forest due the
backdrop of trees that was set up behind him. A totally enjoyable evening with
an enthusiastic crowd give John a couple of Standing O's. Hope he comes back
this way again.
