NETHERLANDS SHOWS
-
PARADISO, AMSTERDAM 10/11/00
FROM: Joanna
This show was a treat, from start to finish. Todd
Snider opening and what a great opening act to have. He's more deadpan than
a lot of artists I've seen and totally effective. His story before the
Prenuptial Agreement song ranks amongst the best I've heard. Personally I
would not have minded if his set had continued for another hour or so. He's
also a very charming person and without a doubt a very talented
singer/songwriter.
I had never seen John Prine live before and that too was
a revelation though I had heard only good things of course about his shows.
He played for nearly two hours which included about 6 songs solo and a 3
song encore, one with the help of Todd Snider. The birthday boys had been
out for a celebration dinner the night before and at midnight they treated
themselves to something to celebrate..... whatever that might be in
Amsterdam. The audience sang the Dutch version of Happy Birthday to
John..... although 'singing' might be kind of overstating it.
The bass player and guitarist who were with John
certainly deserve a mention and I'm really sorry that I didn't really catch
their names. And I haven't had the time yet to check out the cover notes on
any of the cd's.
It was really a wonderful evening, the kind that ensures
I wake up feeling good about life the next morning, even though I only had a
few hours sleep. John said he hoped he would be back more often now that his
date with neck cancer was over and I for one sure hope to see Todd Snider
back on this side of the pond soon too.

Just came home from the JP concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam - Holland that is
- soccer stars, birthday celebrations, illegal smiles... It was fantastic.
Todd Snider is wonderful. I especially liked his song about the pre-nuptial
agreement. Prine was, of course, brilliant. He sang for some 2 hours and did
an extended solo set of favourites. The band was exceptional. He led us
through all the songs that made us love him - from Dear Abby to Angel from
Montgomery and all the other "Souvenirs" with, as always, the
tribute to Steve Goodman. How great that he still does that. What a loss
Steve is but thank the Lord that John's neck troubles are over and he can
continue to thrill us here in the Lowlands. My niece in Minneapolis warned
me to be ready fro a fab - show and she was right - as always. She is a
lawyer and obviously knows her stuff!!! Please come back soon - you said you
would. We'll keep you to that - after all I have a lawyer in the family!!!
Congrats on your birthday.

Hello there, last night I saw John perform at the Paradiso, Amsterdam it was
great!!! It was my first time to actually see him live, after all those
years following him by his records (first LP's and now I've got all his
stuff on CD) he played from 9:30 till 11:30 (including 3 encores) and the
crowd went mad.
