WOW!!! What a great show. I have waited a long time to see John live,it was
well worth the wait. Two hours and 15 minutes of non-stop music and it got
better every minute. My wife was not as big a fan as me, but she is now.
John, please don't wait so long to come back to the Buffalo area. I promise
the weather will be better. Thanks again..
LANDMARK THEATRE, SYRACUSE 11/17/2000
- SYRACUSE
ONLINE: Prine performs a thrilling, 28-song set The folk
singer-songwriter weaves intricate layers of emotion with telling lyrics...By Mark Bialczak
- FROM: Sue aka Wildflower
Chip Taylor opened. the concert..... one of the best that I've ever been
to. John was just one big ol' goofy guy-smiling, laughing and telling silly
jokes through the whole show. The audience was fantastic, some real die hard
Prine fans out there. Just about everyone was singing along to just about
every song. Some people even knew all the words to Let's Talk Dirty in
Hawaiian!! Guys were hollering out-we love you John!! Of course, I think
some of the excitement of the audience could have something to do with some
people feeling no pain because the bar was open during the whole show!! But
you could just tell that John was digging it and getting off on the audience
and he was just a grinnin' from ear to ear. It was great! I cried at the
end. Then the theater started clearing out and about 20 of us went to go
hang out on one side of the theatre. Then... there he was. He came out
smiling, grinning and sauntered over to all of us and thanked us all for
coming. He just hung out chatting with us all as he signed autographs and
posed for pics (damn I left my camera on the kitchen table!) He was so damn
kind and gracious. I just wanted to hug him. As each of us got something
signed, he took the time to talk to each of us. My turn....I was so
flustered! I said I was at Crushfest and that you and Crusher said hi. He
says," oh yeah! I saw Crusher last week in WVA and you say hi to Reeda
for me." he asked where I was from and when I said VT he asked if I had
tickets for the show in Dec. said he was looking forward to doing the show.
(Oh! forgot to tell you! they added a second show for the next night.but
John won't be at that one) Anyway... he said he was sorry that he couldn't
make the second show but that he wanted to be home to go to a PTA meeting at
his kids' school. Isn't that just too cool? He wanted to make it to a PTA
meeting? What a good Dad... the women behind me heard him mention his kids
and next thing you know- everyone has out their wallets, including John, and
are showing off their kids!! I could've stood around talking all night but
there were other people waiting and they wanted to close up the theater
because of a big snowstorm outside... Phew!! I could go on and on...I'm
still on cloud nine! I'm so happy! My goal for the next concert? Get a darn
picture with him!!!

I've been listening to John Prine and his music since I was in high school
in the 70s. Never could afford a concert as it would have meant a motel room
plus tickets. Our daughter moved to Syracuse and bought us tickets to the
11/17 concert for Christmas...we came all the way from Upper Michigan to see
him...it was worth the trip (even the blizzards in lower Michigan both
ways), the performance was magnificent....Thank you for a fine performance!

It took days to come down from this one. As the concert ended, we walked out
of the double doors into lightly falling snow and it felt like being in
Bedford Falls. And what a wonderful show it was! Chip Taylor opened, but it
was hard to hear him back in the 20-something row. Lots of latecomers made
it diffult to see and hear as they leisurely and noisily strolled in to be
seated as he sang, but Taylor seemed to ignore the constant motion and
murmur that continued throughout his 40 minute set. The crowd again seemed
to disregard the dimming lights, but John came on with Jason and David at 9
o'clock sharp playing "Spanish Pipedream." The audience settled
down a bit quicker this time, and I was halfway to heaven in no time. John
played his heart out and loves what he does; there's not doubt about it as
his singing and stories mesmerized the house. In the middle of the show,
someone brought him some flowers, and then someone else gave him a framed
portrait of himself. B! efore he played "In Spite" he mentioned
that usually Iris Dement sang this one with him, but since she couldn't be
there, he held up a picture of her for us instead and made sure to tell us
which parts of the song she sang. Hearing him sing in person all the old
songs that have played so many times in my head almost moved me to tears at
one point, as I heard the almost imperceptible sound of the audience singing
along with every word ever so softly. The timing of David's and Jason's
separate returns to join John after his solos was a work of art all by
itself. Taylor joined them for the encore, but the night was over too soon -
a night never to be forgotten as he sang all of my favorite tunes, except
for "Bottomless Lake." But he said he'll be coming back again, so
surely the next time around.... During the break, I picked up my copy of
"Souvenirs" and when I played it for the first time back home, it
felt like being right back there with him in the old theater again. ! And I
still feel that whenever I play it. When John comes to town, it IS a
wonderful life.

I saw John for the first time ever in Syracuse, NY on 11/17/00. It was worth
the almost 30-year wait. Chip Taylor opened for him with about an hour's
worth of music. Just Chip on acoustic guitar and another gentleman (sorry
I'm unable to provide his name) who played Electric guitar with Van Morrison
and I believe played on Moondance and Brown-eyed girl. Chip wrote
"Angel of the Morning" and "Wild Thing" among many
others. John's 28-song set was similar to that of 11/9 in Roanoke, Virginia,
but he opened with "Spanish Pipedream." Included in the Syracuse
show that didn't appear in Roanoke was "Let's Talk Dirty In
Hawaiian." He told pretty much the same stories as reported by K
Fischer in Roanoke. John was in fine form and thrilled the crowded Landmark
Theater more than I've ever seen. To use John's own lyrics, "Gee, that
was a wonderful show!" We were roaring at the lyrics that were funny,
singing along to "Please Don't Bury Me" and "Illegal
Smile" (he eve! n let us sing the chorus to this one by ourselves!) and
the house was deathly silent during "Donald and Lydia" and
"Sam Stone." Absolutely the most enjoyable concert I've ever been
to. My date had never heard of him a week before the show, and now she can't
get enough. It didn't hurt that we were 5 rows from the stage either! One
interesting note; bassist David Jacques alternates between acoustic stand-up
bass and electric bass and even plays the stand-up with a bow during some
songs. Spine-tinglingly wonderful effect. And Jason Wilber is certainly no
slouch either, playing harmonica, electric guitar and mandolin. And he
showed us some pretty impressive slide guitar licks. I expected a show I'd
never forget and John Prine delivered that and more. Thank you, John, for
the wonderful music you've created over the years, and thank you for the
beautiful show you gave us in Syracuse, NY on one snowy November evening.
