REVIEWS OF THE
JOHN PRINE CONCERT TOUR 2000
OHIO SHOWS
TAFT
THEATRE, CINCINNATI, 4/29/00
- "Energetic
Prine Rocks Taft Theatre" by Chris Vargas of the Cincinnati Enquirer
- FROM: Pougles:
John's appearance at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati on April 29, 2000, was
like every other Prine concert I have witnessed - different. While there, I was
thinking about a chat some of us had last week. We were trying to name our three
most favorite Prine songs. Just couldn't stop at three. The same goes for his
concerts. I couldn't put one above another. They have all been great. After
seeing Iris with John, I thought it might be a little disappointing seeing him
with the two-man backup, but they performed so many of his early pieces with so
much enthusiasm and quality sound, ranging from his first album treasures
through The Missing Years and Lost Dogs selections that it made for a really
great show. And his solo version of In Spite of Ourselves was truly great. John
was much more verbal at this concert than I had witnessed before, too. That
added a lot to the songs and the show. My daughter, Faun, who had attended one
of the Lost Dogs shows, was greatly pleased, a! s was her friend, Amber, who was
attending her first Prine concert. The audience reception was greater than I had
ever witnessed. Paradise brought a standing ovation that lasted longer than any
I've ever seen. Another positive point to this concert was John's opening act,
Paul Thorn. I don't know if John personally picked him to open, but I think he
should consider him again if possible. He was an ideal opener as his music is
very complimentary to John's and he was quite a crowd pleaser also. My daughter
was familiar with some of Paul's music. Surprised me. And one last comment. To
top off the evening, we ran into Jon and Crusher there. Couldn't think of a
better way to spend a Saturday evening. Thanks, John.

Went to the Cincinnati Concert and as usual John Prine was fine.... He played
all the " OLD " songs and was really sounding good as per usual.. I am
a friend of John's and have " floated the GREEN RIVER " with him..
Daddy won't you take me back !!! I guess my need here is to relate how a FEW can
screw up a good concert for all... There was a female with a crowd that thought
she could sing all of JOHN'S songs better than HIM!!!! I know John and He really
dislikes the few that cannot let him sing and entertain, as we pay for!! Guess
again you will always have a few.... Great Concert and I really appreciate John
coming to Cincinnati again after all these years

The concert in Lakewood, Ohio was one of the best ever. John gave the
concert of a lifetime. I took four people with me who had never heard him before
and they haven't stopped smiling yet. Needless to say, they are (to use their
word) hooked. I wish John "all the best"

Hello Fellows Prinesters! I saw Mr. Prine in Cleveland on April 28th. He
said he was going to make up for lost time, and he did! His band opened the show
and played about 5 songs with him. They then took a break for about an hour!
They left "the man" alone with his guitar. It was great, he was a
steamroller up there. When we exited the hall, I could not believe it was 11:30,
and Prine was on stage without a break for 2 1/2 hours! I saw him at Kent
State in Oct of 99 and the one thing that I notice, this time, was his
excitement. He was smiling and really happy to be there. I was at the front
stage in Kent, and sorry to say that I was not in Cleveland. He looked healthier
from my vantage point. And he showed it in his performance,
endurance...endurance...endurance. We heard more stories about the songs at this
show. There was one zealot/drunk in the crowd that insisted on yelling
Prine's name during every quiet rest in the middle of a song. It was first
time I ever heard anyone tell someone to shut-up at a concert. The rest of
audience sat silent a drank up every word in every song, this guy spent some
time drinking something else in the parking lot. Prine was charged! The
band was tight! The opening act was Chris Smither, this guy was a magician on
the Blue Alverez Yari guitar! Life is Good!
