REVIEWS OF THE
John Prine Concert
Tour 2000
PENNSYLVANIA SHOWS
FROM: Mike Littwin
John Prine at the Keswick Theater, Glenside Pa. April 15, 2000 Seat
T-26 Right Side. 22 songs in two hours and 3 encore songs. Very power full
singing. Even Better than the Philly Folk Festival Show Last Year. Mr. Prine was
in very good voice this night and did old and new songs, Opening with Spanish
Pipe Dream and Closing with Lake Marie, encores included That's the way the
world goes round, Hello in there and Muhlenberg County. The line up of songs was
complemented by his dialogues about being on the road with Dad. Dad driving
crazy. Mom saying You are going to kill us all. and the boys looking at each
other thinking "This woman never lied to us before". A most enjoyable
show in a great venue. The happiness Mr. Prine has while he performs washes the
audience and lifts everyone's sprits. Iris Dement wasn't there but Mr. Prine did
In Spite of Our Self by him self and let just a little of her voice to mix with
his. This performance was better than any of his recorded material. He did a
straight two hours and his voice only was strained once during a monologue, But
it didn't effect his singing at all. The only thing that could have made the
concert better for me is that if in addition to the four women who came with me,
I could have been with my heart's content.

Once again John's performance was great! He told some cool stories in
between songs. He did a long solo set of a lot of his older songs. He got a
rousing standing ovation and came back out and did another 5 songs ending with
Paradise. The crowd was wonderful ... not too rowdy, VERY enthusiastic. maybe
that was because about a third of the audience was over at the Tavern having a
brewski before the show!? Even though I didn't get to meet John (someday...), I
did meet some real neat people before the show at the Tavern. For some of them
this was their first show. I think I can safely say that they were all
impressed! A good time was had by all...hhhhhmmmmmmmm, which show will I go to
next? I can't wait!!

WOW! The twenty-five years it took me to see John was way too long. The show
he put on last night at the Keswick Theatre put a smile on my face that is going
to last a long, long time. That plus the way he showed he cares by inviting the
few of us who stood outside in the rain into his room to meet and take some
photos. First off John apologized for letting us stand out in the rain. My
sister was wearing a Guy Clark shirt, so John asked her how Guy was doing. Said
they live about a block apart and he hadn't seen him for a long time. There were
eleven of us invited in, three guys we met at the tavern before the show from
Hershey,Pa., three guys from Towanda, Pa, two ladies from I don't know where and
my sister, her beau and I. My sister Cindy grabbed everyone's cameras and
started stealing a little bit of everyone's soul. I'll tell ya, here it is two
days later and I'm still getting the perpetual smiles and kind of a giddy
feeling. I met my lyrical hero, got my picture taken with him, spoke with him,
got my shirt autographed (it will be encased in glass soon), and it was all a
belated 50th birthday gift from Cindy and Joe. I do love those two. As far as
what I talked to John about, the truth is I was too flustered to think of much.
I thanked him for all the smiles he has given me over the years. We interrupted
his dinner, but he really didn't seem to mind. One of the best nights of my
life. ~ Homer ~~P.S. The depends failed me when he did Bottomless
Lake

Well there we all were, attending a show that some of us waited 20 years for
and others only a few.Glenside, Pa proved to be a disapointment for no one!! All
the favorites were played plus a few surprises. And if that wasn't enough we got
to meet "the Man" after the show, ... it was worth an hour wait in the
rain!! Nobody seemed to care, Prine was there. The ten faithful were invited out
of the rain and backstage to meet John...and wow! John was energetic and
friendly, answering questions, signing autographs... It was all a "Priner"
could hope for! ~ Mike

Saw John with R.B. Morris last night at the Palace in Greensburg. This was
the 4th time I have seen John and he just keeps getting better and better. The
Palace was a great venue- reminded me of the Southern in Columbus where I saw
him last year. He seems a lot happier and more relaxed than last year. He's
definitely back. The stories were more numerous than I've ever heard. His
comments to the fans screaming suggestions were memorable, too. "Yeah, I
know them all!" and "You want fries with that?" John apologized a
couple times for not coming to Western PA for a while. (It sure was an easier
ride than Columbus- thanks John- I'm as happy as a clam- come back soon!) There
was no female accompaniment for any of the songs from "In Spite of
Ourselves" so he opted to only do the title track, doing both male and
female parts- it kinda worked but Iris Dement would've been a bonus. More laughs
when doing Lake Marie and getting to the "Italian Sausages
were sssss..." the crowd anticipating the "sssssizzling" made
John say "There were some snakes, too." I thought the biggest crowd
pleaser of the night was "Bottomless Lake". The crowd's reactions were
fresh, unlike other funny songs like "Dear Abby." John really
appreciates it when he gets lively feedback from the audience.

I attended John Prines April 13 show in Greensburg, PA (outside of
Pittsburgh). JP played to a house packed with hard-core fans. He opened the show
with Spanish Pipedream and followed it with two hours of non-stop music,
then a fifteen-minute encore. The show was a mix of the old favorites and newer
tunes from The Missing Years and Lost Dogs. He played only the title song from
In Spite of Our Selves, as he had no duet partner. We were treated to JP singing
both parts (Now this is the girl part
.). For most of the show he was
backed by Jason Wilber and Dave Jacques, but played the middle portion of the
evening solo (including a haunting Sam Stone). While JPs voice is a
little huskier than years past, his humor and enthusiasm remain the same. He
really seemed to enjoy himself, telling more stories than usual. The show ended
with John shaking hands with fans in the front row. This was a classic Prine
show.
FROM: Lisa Franklin:
I went to the show last night at the Palace Theater in Greensburg, and I just
wanted to say that John was fabulous. The sound put out by the three of them was
awesome. I saw him a couple years ago at Wolftrap in Vienna, Virginia and I
think last night's performance was even better than that. One of the highlights
of the show for me was that, since In Spite Of Ourselves is a duet album, John
had to perform both the male and female parts of the title song and had us all
rolling. John and his backups put on a great show and the Palace was
wowed.

I saw John Prine for the first time last evening (after several decades of
listening to his tunes. It was a splendid show--he basically worked his tail off
for 2:15, never taking a break or losing energy or enthusiasm. He apologized for
having been so long in making a live appearance in western PA, declared that
he'd give us an extra effort, and then kept his word.
