REVIEWS OF THE
JOHN PRINE IN SPITE OF OURSELVES CONCERT TOUR
TEXAS SHOWS
FROM: Willie Atkinson
John's show at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas was wonderful! He
opened with "Spanish Pipedream", and after hitting the last chord in
the song, looked out at the audience and said, "I hope you're comfortable,
because you're in for a good, long show." He played for two and a half
hours, and could have gone much longer, as far as we were concerned. His playing
has improved over the years, and his voice has actually gotten stronger. The
legendary Prine wit was in full swing. What a great night! Come back soon, John.
- BASS
HALL, FT WORTH - 4/7/00
FROM: Charlie Grice
Review of 4/08 concert @ Ft. Worth: Set amidst police barricades surrounding
skyscrapers with more holes than windows due to recent tornados, my son and I
made our way from Houston to Ft. Worth's Bass Performance Hall. Strong winds
blew us into this incredibly beautiful place along the lines of a great English
theater--very tall but not too deep with less gingerbread but much marble.
Buckwheat Zydeco was a pleasant surprise as an opener. He was in more of warm-up
mode rather than a get down on da bayou on a Friday night mode but was fun.
Several couples were called out of the crowd to sing Hey Good Lookin' with
him--pretty cute. JP dressed in his best western attire--black suit, white shirt
with black string tie opened with Spanish Pipedream (or as the Ft. Worth
reviewer said, "blow up your TV, as he had in NO @ House of Blues in
December. They seemed to have sound troubles through the third song, Souvenirs,
and perhaps some venue related starch as this place was extremely classy--not
quite the beer hall atmosphere of the HOB. JP sounded very tired when talking
between songs but had no trouble with his singing which was fine as usual. He
talked about his recent HS reunion ("not much hair out there") and
after singing Dear Abby said that he visited the spot where he and "that
last person referred to" (hair up in curlers...) were. He said most of the
old landmarks were there. He also added a few thing Jesus found when returning
to Rome (Missing Yrs), i.e.., bog muggers which he stopped the song to say was
added after the Ireland tour when David (?) had his car window broken and
luggage stolen on a r! emote mountain ("mainly made of rocks") in
Scotland (luggage was recovered in Galway Bay and brought back to him by a
friend). The set lasted 2 hrs.+ and included a personal favorite missing in
NO--Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian, introduced as a song he was going to sing
"in two languages at once". We were blessed to find that Iris DeMent
"was nice enough to get off her couch in KC and join us" for several
off of In Spite of Ourselves. He said that when he went to write the title cut
for Billy Bob Thornton's movie he asked him whether the song should deal with
the movie or not. He said Billy Bob's response was "um". Iris came
back with him for an encore looking beautiful in a long black evening gown vs.
country housedress in NO. Oh yea, before forget--Iris will you marry me?--it's
not just for the tickets I ask but I really do love you! Oh yea, we love you too
John--great show as usual. Take care of yourself--your an official American
treasure now.
