am came home about 6:15 pm, he told Lydia he left Billy in charge of the station
and that they were going out to Cathy's to see her live guy from Chi-town and
have some fun, Lydia said now that she was pregnant she couldn't drink.
Sam said "Fine, fine oh so fine." as he headed to have a bath
from a dusty day at the garage."
Lydia came into the john as Sam was laying in the tub smoking a joint and
drinking a Miller, the champagne of bottled beers and asked, "Sam, why are
we going over to Cathy's tonight?"
"We have to party and we did have an invite from our neighbour,"
Sam responded, and he told Lydia about how he told Billy the bum to run the
station until 9 o'clock and to just put the keys under the door at home.
Sam and Lydia got dressed and walked across the county road to the juke
box saloon, Sam piped up, "It's not a saloon..."
Lydia snapped back, "Well she lives in an aluminum house
trailer."
"Aw heck" said Sam "we all got to live and work
somewhere."
As they walked Sam smoked some more pot. Lydia did not. They sat in the
front and enjoyed John Prine, especially the stories before the songs.
Sam said "I think his intros are longer than his songs. Who cares I
like him."
They ate BBQ chicken wings, new on the menu, listened to "Spanish
Pipedream" and they ended up having a real good time.
Sam Stone came home with Lydia, cross the road, he looked over at the gas
station and all the lights were out.
Sam noted, "Billy must of got a sugar rush and forgot to leave the
keys, after that plate of fried chicken you gave him and I slipped him a Baby
Ruth. No Problem, Billy will come in early tomorrow with the keys." Sam smoked some more, sang a song from the
John Prine show and told Lydia how far John would go and said he really liked
that song about the Viet Nam vet.
Lydia said she dug the song about Dear Abby.
They went to bed little knowing things were changing.
