A Personal Message From John Prine

"About fifteen months ago I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. This cancer was located in my right neck area.

After speaking with various doctors and oncologists in Nashville and Memphis, I headed down to MD Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston, TX. Some very good friends in Memphis had spoken highly of the facility.

I had surgery in January of 1998. The doctors removed a small tumor taking a portion of my neck with it. I had six weeks of radiation therapy following the surgery.

It's been almost a year since the surgery and radiation and I'm feelin' great. Actually a whole lot better than I've felt in a long time.

I feel strong enough to resume touring and getting back to work again. Until now I had decided to remain private about this matter so my family and I could concentrate on me getting better. Now I want to make a public statement to let you all know what has been happening.

Those of you who knew I had a health problem, but not exactly what it was, I appreciate your quiet concern. Particularly members of the media who kept it quiet...Thank you!

In closing, I'm looking forward to getting back on the road and singing my songs. Hopefully my neck is looking forward to its job of holding my head up above my shoulders
