JUNE 2008
Lin - Fort Worth, Texas
Dear John, I first saw you perform in Houston in the early 70s. I was very taken by your thoughtful and heartfelt lyrics, and saw you perform several other times during the 70s. My all time favorite song of yours is Angel from Montgomery. I lost track of you for some years, could not find your records, and had begun to assume that you had passed away, until one day I had the good fortune to come across "The John Prine Anthology Great Days". This was in early 2007. I went onto the internet and was delighted to find that you are still living and still performing. Well that just made my day. And made me realize that I should write you and thank you for the enjoyment I have gotten from your music, and to let you know how much I appreciate your being there as a musician all these years.

June 1972, I saw you at the Schlitz beer tent. We were both drunk. You couldn't get off the picnic table. Got out of prison in 1974 and moved in with your brother, Billy, in Madison. Haven't seen either one of you since. How's it been?
John Rick aka John Miles (to your brother, Billy)
p.s. Enjoyed your concert at Ruth Eckert Hall, Clearwater a few years ago. Thanks for some great tunes.
p.p.s. Our wedding song was - "In Spite of Ourselves"
Nancy from Phoenix
We just found a record player and broke out our old "Best of John Prine" LP the other night. My husband and I rediscovered good music all over again. It brings back cherished memories. What a blessing!
We plan to add to our John Prine collection, so keep it coming!
Randy Edison - Springdale, Newfoundland, Canada
I "discovered" your music in the early 80s when an older friend luckily left a cassette in a car I purchased from him. I was hooked when I heard Automobile for the first time and haven't stopped enjoying since. I'm glad I shared your music with my baby girl at the time because she's now grown into a fan in her own right. We got to enjoy a concert together in St. John's and couldn't believe our good fortune when you sang Jesus, the Missing Years. Thanks for the family memory. Any plans to visit Eastern Canada again?
Ted - Westchester Illinois
Hi John!
You have probably been on my porch many many times when you used to deliver mail. I live on Haase righ across from the Oakwood / Glen oak cemetery.
A old friend's father introduced us to your music. I have been a big fan ever since. I sit on my patio and bang out your songs (poorly) on a guitar and while some friends sing along. We all love your music.
I was not able to catch you last time you came to the "old neigborhood". I did catch you when you played Proviso East a few years back. That was a great show!
You take care of yourself and come back to the neighborhood sometime. I'll be there!
Peter Enn
Hi, my name's Peter. I'm a 55 year old Welshman (with Estonian blood) I can't claim to be a great fan of John Prine - I feel being a fan is something to do with being young - but I'll always be a fan of great songwriters and performers, and John Prine is very definately in those categories. I think it was the BBC's In Concert (this is a memory so I could be wrong) series that I first saw John Prine in 1970/71 and I recorded some of the songs performed on my crappy little cassette recorder. I only mention this because my mother gave me a guitar as a present around about the same time and it wasn't until I saw his performance on that show that I decided to pick up the instrument and learn, and Everybody was the first tune I ever taught myself to play. Now I can't claim to play that well ,but that guitar has been something of a comfort and joy to me for almost 40 years and I can only thank John Prine for being the inspiration to try and learn. I had no idea John Prine had been unwell until I started doing some research on the computer recently (my mother has lung cancer and my partner and I are nursing her at present) so I just wanted to say thanks for being an inspiration and may you long continue to be so.
Cindy Martin
I would Love the Piano Sheet Music for Storm Windows so I can play along with the instrumentals ... anywhere or anyway I can find it? (sorry Cindy, we haven't been able to find it either - you might want to try asking for it on the Oh Boy/Prine Shrine comunity forum message board - )
Kinda Warren - Edmonton, Alberta
Hi there!
my name is kinda, i figure i was named after my dads first two wives ( Karen & Linda) but thats getting off topic. I'm nineteen years old and all nineteen years i grew up listening to your meaningful and heartfelt lyrics. My dad is 59 now and he always said there was no other artist he had more respect for than You. Your lyrics always gave me hope and a better understanding of the human condition, insight like that is difficult to find these days. I've never been to one of your concerts and i've never seen you in person but i imagine you'd be similiar to my dad . I've written essays quoting your lyrics and tried my best to cover your songs at open mic nights, if i ever had the chance to shake your hand i would never pass it up. I'm sure one day i'll get the chance sit and philosophize with you. As my dad would say "i've taught you everything i know and you still know nothing" :) anyway thanks for sharing your amazing talents with the world!

Hi John, Lance Bishop here. I just wanted to take a moment to offer a profound thank you for your music. I have been listening to you for a number of years now & I just want to say thatI finally picked up a guitar & started playing. You were the only artist I ever listened to that inspired me to take lessons & now I can play your songs for my 2 1/2 year old son. Thank you for your inspiration & your gift of music. Ps If you are ever in this neck of the woods I will be first in line for tickets to see you. Take care & keep the music coming.
Connie Jo - Augusta West Virginia
I saw you in Capon Bridge WV in the mid 70s when my kids were babies. Now one is gone and the other has 3 kids and even the kids are fans! The 9y/0 plays Please DOn't Bury me and 4 Way Stop Dillema every time she is in the van. My friend took me to see you 5 weeks after my knee replacement. I need to get another body part replaced because I want to go again!LOL
Than k you so very much for all your music and for bringing so amny generations together with it.
Carol Silver
Dear John,
I have been a fan of yours for 37 years. I saw you perform several times in Toronto at Mariposa, the Riverboat and Massey Hall. I was recently listening to your CD in my car and as usual I was singing along as I know most of your lyrics. I was listening to The Late John Garfield blues song and for the first time I heard you say "dime-store Jews". I never knew the word used was "Jews". Exactly what did you mean by that line?
Sincerely, Carol Silver

I just wanted to thank whomever thought up the Prine shrine. I was able to purchase the early bird tickets and get great seats for this historical show. I I just love reading what John's fans write and love learning the chords and lyrics. It's a nice relaxing way to spend the day when I have a day to spend. John and Emmylou were amazing, even if she was under the weather. The setting was perfect, amidst thousands of fans - I just couldn't be more fulfilled and happy with John Prine and his league of dedicated fans. very very thankful
Suzanne - Colorado
Dear John - your concert at Red Rocks the other night was amazing. Such a perfect night! Please record the sexy, bluesy version of "Ain't Hurting Nobody" you played there.
I thought I'd let you know that after every song the man behind me would say, "Thank you, John!" and we'd say ditto to that.

Just wanted a set list from JP's NOLA JazzFest concert. Would have written down the order of what he sang if it wasn't raining so much...
"Happy Enchilada and you think you're gonna drown..." LOVE YOU JOHN PRINE!!!

Hi John - About your unscented air freshener? Well, we hung ours up in the bathroom at the lake and since then you've become the blame hound for everything that goes on in there! We still love you any way - you old stinker!

In November 1987, I lost my oldest brother, Kyle, as a result of a car crash. In going through the wreckage back then, there was "Prime Prine" in the tape deck. . .'Paradise' was the song playing when I started it up. . .I didn't know, at 17, what to do with that tape or your music. I ended up learning to play many of your songs. I still have the tape and still 'try' to play my favorites -- "Donald..."; '"half-n-enchilada'... 'Angel...' - ' I still have the "Prime Pine" tape in my car. . .just to know and pay homage to my brother. Thank you for all that you've brought to our lives. I can't wait to see you for the first time at Red Rocks June 6 after listening to you through the ears of my brother for so long. - Sincerely, Oscar G. Robertson, Major, USAF, 20080604 --

I have grown up listening to John Prine. My nephew spent one entire summer learning every lyric John ever wrote. He is 22, therefore, I feel there is hope for our future! We had tickets to see John in concert in Cleveland maybe 12 years ago??, unfortunately, unexpected problems arose and we couldn't make it. I STILL feel like I missed out... I have a brain tumor and have assessed my life many times. One regret... not making the John Prine concert!
Jennifer Bromke Lynden Ontario Canada
Dear John
Canada is missing you so much!! When do you think you can make it back to Toronto (or somewhere close by)?? Withdrawal is very difficult!! Hope you are doing well and getting some R&R. I would love to go fishing with you sometime--we have some beautiful lakes up here too. If you are ever in the Hamilton area--check out one of Hamiltons finest musicians--Doug Fever!! It would be our pleasure to but you a pint or two and entertain you for a change!!
All the best and really really hope to see you soon!!!!

Don Stiernberg - one of Chicago's busiest musicians talks with John Prine
http://www.mandozine.com/resources/CGOW/stiernberg.php --
Q17
Q - Can you tell us about playing w/ Steve Goodman, also a unique, funny musician, and Steve's relationship with Jethro?
A - Of course I'm happy to talk about Goodman. I've been very fortunate in my years as a musician to meet some of the all-time greats. Steve is one of those in many ways. Of course "City of New Orleans" is an American Standard, people will be playing it and listening to it long after we're gone. He was also an incredible entertainer, and his sense of humor and ability to draw the strength to perform, inform, and entertain while battling a lethal disease is awe inspiring.
Jethro's son Johnny is a killer guitar player, really got the Burns magic in his hands. He was playing with John Prine and Steve Goodman back in the the time when Chicago was a hotbed of singer-songwriter activity. Besides those two we had Michael Smith, Al Day, Mike Jordan, Harry Waller, the Holstein brothers-thanks to Goodman and Prine, for a while there everyone who wanted to write songs came to Chicago. Anyway Johnny took Jethro to a show and Jethro was so taken with Steve's abilities that he told him afterwards"if you ever need a mandolin player, call me". a
The legend I've heard is that Goodman couldn't believe it and called the next day and had things verified-by Jethro's wife! You see Homer had tragically passed, and Jethro was at loose ends somewhat. Also remember that Jethro was the main writer of the Homer and Jethro material, and I think he saw quite a bit of himself in Goodman-a clever writer, fearless entertainer, great picker...
So Goodman took Jethro on the road, put him on the records, and even was kind enough to have Jethro's band open shows for him around Chicago, which is where I got to meet him. Jethro as a result found a new audience and was rejuvenated not only by working again but by the camaraderie. Steve treated him like a king and who wouldn't? And of course they were both baseball fans, so road trips often incorporated the essential trip to the ballpark.
One time there was a show at Harper College here in Chicagoland, Jethro Burns Quartet opening for Steve Goodman...that in itself is interesting as four musicians "opened" for two--a big band could be on before Steve, it wouldn't matter, his act would not be overpowered by any act. Anyway Steve wanted me to come back out at the end of his set and sing tenor on Bill Monroe's "Love Come Home" , which we had been fooling with in the dressing room. You can imagine the thrill for me, playing a song by one of my heroes in the company of two more of my heroes..."just lean over and sing harmony in my mic" Steve says. So i go and do as I'm told, walking right into a comic bit, because Steve was so short! He looked up at me and got laughs a couple times, then finally tore the place up by crouching down and singing into the guitar mic. While he's down there he looks up again, crouching now like a baseball catcher, and says "one's a fastball, two's a curve..."
Steve really loved the mandolin and was a champion of many great artists he encountered. He had a Flatiron mandola and wrote a beautiful tune called "If Jethro Were Here", I think it's on his "Affordable Art" record. I asked him about his mandola playing and he said the mandola was " a songwriter's friend", something that broke him out of his guitar based thinking and inspired new things. He gave me permission to record "If Jethro were Here" and I hope I can pull that off someday-it's a neat pentatonic melody with a bridge that has a 5-sharp5-6-b7 voice movement, great for blowing over. Steve also had Marty Stuart play on "When My Rowboat comes In", another typically poignant Goodman masterpiece. And he brought attention to Martin, Bogan and Armstrong, the great blues and standards string band. Jazz violinist Johnny Frigo played on Steve's records too.
When I think about Steve's relationship with Jethro, I keep coming back to the idea that they were both great writers. Listen to Talk Backwards or Vegematic or Dying Cub Fan's Last Request, and then to some Homer and Jethro parody stuff, and you'll see what I mean. They must have felt like they "went to different schools together".
Here was a guy who used to go fishing with Hank Williams, hanging with the guy who wrote "City of New Orleans". Beautiful. And Jethro really appreciated that Steve respected him enough as an artist to hire him and get him out in front of big crowds and a whole new set of people.
A very moving evening for me was the Tribute to Steve Goodman Concert at Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago. This became a record which won the folk Grammy I think. I was really proud to be there in Jethro's band. It was great to see first hand the power of music, how one man's abiliities as a musician, writer, and entertainer could shape and enrich the lives of so many others.
Another thing may give insight into these two extraordinary personalities. On the back of one of his LP's Steve was thanking the side musicians in the usual way:
Marty Stuart appears courtesy of such and such record company, the Whites appear courtesy such and such company, and then..Jethro Burns APPEARS TO BE GETTING YOUNGER.
Steve guested on Jethro's PBS TV special "Jethro and friends." It turned out to be his last TV appearance if I'm not mistaken. Their rapport is clearly illustrated in the performance. I mention the show because I got to witness an exciting thing. Steve had started writing a tune on the airplane. He finished it with minimal guidance from Jethro in the green room, then they played it on the show. The audience was floored by "Hot Tub Refugee", so Steve recorded it shortly thereafter. That spontaneous creativity was inspiring.
I'm really glad some of the recorded work of these two great artists is available for study and enjoyment. Thanks, Wilson, for having me ponder my encounters with Jethro and Steve. What a blessing to have known them!

The first time I saw john was at Rouge’s Gallery in Norfolk Va. In 1975 or 79. I was hooked. I have since seen him 15 times. The last time was in Atlanta at the Cobb Energy Center last saturday night. He played every song I wanted him to and a few that I didn’t know I wanted him to play.
When someone has been around for over 30 years they become a parity of themselves. This is not true of John. The energy that he gave off was infectious. I took my 17 year old son to see him. He said where did this guy come from? We love John Prine.
Name: Mark - LaCrosse, KS
John,
Not much of a story, just wanted you to now I've been a fan for many years and finally caught your show in Wichita, KS last year. My legs were too long to fit in the seats, but I talked your sound man into letting me hang out at the board and listen to the show. (I'm a sound guy too). I've worked in "the business" for many years and yours was the first show I actually bought a ticket to in a hell of a long time. Keep up the good work John!

Dear John
Hey John my name is Chris this is an honor to be able to write you. I know you probably get a lot of fan mail, but my story is prob one you would understand. my father got me into good music when I was young. you were probably one of his favorite. he was a part of the hippie love generation you sang about, but one thing I learned from my father was his drinking habits. I learned from a young age to pick up a guitar and get as drunk as possible. well that was when I was like 13 im 22 now and i feel my mind is out of place. there's a strange feeling of insanity that follows me around every corner,I could be in a room full of people ,and still feel alone. and the only relief I can seem to find now is folk music, and Jim beam whiskey. I seem to favor your style ,and almost every word hits some nerve. you see there is so much in my head, and it seems next to impossible to put it all in a row. at night i sing with a belly full of booze and during the day i seem to turn into mumble stew, I can't get a word or a thought out. I know you can't help me, but maybe some sort of word that means something. because I know a guy like you does not speak in vain. Its like the old saying "those in power write the history and those who suffer write the songs". well I hope you receive this letter if its not your wishes to write back then I will still understand you are the greatest folk singer Ive ever known in my time next to blaze foley that is. well heres to you Mr Prine keep on singing that good ole music

Hey John,How was the fishin'?
Thank you for the wonderful show in Atlanta last night!!!!!! Thank you for being in my life!!!!!! Words can't explain what your music has meant to me over the years. Spanish Pipedream has been adopted as my theme song, thanks for opening with that one. Anyway............ none of us are guaranteed tomorrow and I just wanted you to know how much you and your music mean to me. I'd give anything to shake your hand and tell you in person, but I don't know how to go about it and I'm sure I'm just one of the millions who feel this way.
How was your fishing trip? Where did you go? Did you fish AND whistle? I'm sure it was fabulous, there's nothing like a day of fishin' even if there's not a lot of catchin' goin' on.
Can't wait for your next visit to Atlanta!!!!!
See you then

My first husband had a lot of flaws, but one of them wasn't his taste in music. He played your (back then) tapes a lot. I fell in love with the music, the lyrics, etc. Very talented guy, that Prine. And then, of course, I was a Bonnie Raitt fan from way, way back (yes, I'm just a little younger than she is).
After a lot of false starts, I finally found the love of my life. He had a lot of flaws too, but they were bearable. We fell in love about seven years before he died. We waited and we waited and finally, when we were just about to move into life with each other, he went and got feckin' cancer! The nerve of the man! But I wouldn't trade a minute of how much I got to love him during the last year of his life. He was getting better from the cancer when the heart attacks started. He died five days before my divorce was final. From heart failure. Nothing ever failed in his heart. And after he died I got to know more "stuff" (like all those facts and details you get to find out when you actually LIVE with each other) about him. And damn! His favorite musician was Iris De Ment. Never heard of her, but we played her song, "My Life" at his memorial. Then I started surfing around and found out you sing with her, and I found the song you did a few years back, "In Spite of Ourselves." So I got a request. Next time you sing that in a concert, will you dedicate it to Joe and me? We almost got there. I'd sure enough appreciate it. So would Joe. If you're interested in more about Joe and me, check out my blog and click on the video here.

I was lucky enough to first hear your music in the 70s and have loved you ever since. So last night, as I was settling in at a Bruce Cockburn concert, I was thrilled to see your name jump out at me from my program. It was not easy, but I made myself wait until intermission before I ran downstairs to buy tickets to your show -- got great seats too. I missed you the last time you were in Anchorage because we had a newly adopted son (beautiful two-year-old Roma boy from Bulgaria) and we could not bear to leave him with someone else, even for a few hours. That was a long time ago, he's 14 now, and I am happy to say that this time he will be with us at your concert. Thank you so much for this unexpected gift, I can hardly wait to see you.
Troy Wayman- Nashville, TN
At the ripe old age of 45, I claim to be the first John Prine fan!! (Actually, I am the second; my friend Mike was the one who turned me on to John.) I was just a kid when John's self titled album was released. Even at my then young age, I knew that I was hearing something so pure and different. I loved what Kris Kristofferson wrote on the back of John's first album cover and all these years later, I still couldn't agree more! There were times in Nashville when I would see John at local haunts. I would sit quietly, admiring the man with the mind, whose music had been the sound track of my life, never daring to strike up a conversation or ask for an autograph. Later, my friend Jeff, who ran a local pipe and cigar store, got John's autograph for me. It is framed and hangs in my office next to a photo of John. Over the years, I have seen John in concert several times and each one was better than the last. This Tuesday night, May 13, 2008, I get the chance once again the see and hear the legend. In July of 2006, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I recently joined Gilda's Club here in Nashville and saw where John was doing a benefit for the club. I had tickets within minutes of knowing he was coming to the Belcourt. So John, if you are reading this before the Nashville show and thinking," I need a partner for Angel from Montgomery", I'll be sitting in the crowd!!! Thanks John for a lifetime of great music and memories!! The best is still yet to come!!!
Suzanne, NJ
Hi John, are your sons musicians? I'm sure they must have picked something up between you and Fiona! Anyway, I just wanted to tell ya I luv your music- I wish you'd come to NJ like the Count Basie theatre in Red Bank, NJ. Oh and I just wanted to tell you another thing, you were great at Carnegie Hall. I guess that chewing gum you stepped on brought you good luck-if you can make it there you can make it anywhere-----There was a pic taken of you @ the Palace Theatre in your site; it was funny you hair looked as blue as your suit! Ha,Ha-are you starting a new trend or are you just a fashion plate?!!!!! Well, I hope your feeling good and no matter how old you get I will still marry you. Lets go to Hawaii and just talk dirty-I'll even let ya whisper in my ear...... Tu da lu

Hi, my husband has been an enthusiatic listener to John Prines music since the 70's before I first knew him. We live in NZ and this year are travelling from the east coat to the west coast of the South Island every week. About a 5 hour drive. We always listen to John Prine CD's. I sing the songs with a John Prine accent. It seems inescapable. Does everyone do this?

I read history. Today I checked out The Coldest Winter America And The Korean War by David Halbersrtam. On page two of the introduction John Prine's name an his song Hello In There is mentioned. Great, as John sang eloquently, we lost Davey in the Korean War. Thanks John, I wish you could visit my area more often. Dave an Jason are appreciated also, thank them for me.

Hi,
My husband and I have wanted to see you for years, but it seems that when we were somewhere on vacation, you were scheduled to be there there usually the evening after we had left.
Last night I had a dream about meeting you, and when I got up, I checked your website and found out that you are coming to Portland Me, so needless to say, we have tickets. We are so very excited about seeing you. Wish we could meet you, but that would be another story.

Therfore my 8 year old son and all of his cousins are also fans. We took all of the kids 2 years ago when you played in TO at U of T. I'll never forget it and I look forward to taking them to many more. There is no music in the world so simple yet so deep. The song remembers when - thank you for keeping me right there.

I was sitting in the passenger seat of my dad's chevy truck. We were heading out to the nearest fishing hole.Listening to "In a town this size". My part was that of Dolores Keane. With the windows wide open, the summer breeze, sharing a moment in time. What can I say? You have been apart of our family's life. Whether it is Our town, Donald and Lydia or It's a big old goofy world. The words are our soundtrack. My dad planted your seed a long time ago. From the friends we have always had or the new friends we meet. He has introduced them all to your music. Now when they come over to have some beers and play darts, they expect to hear Georgie singing your tunes. It would only be his dream to see you in concert. I know that you have made a few apperances up here in Canada. But we have never had the oppurtunity to have that experience. So how about you make another trip. So I can buy my dad tickets to your show. You know if I were to do that I would be "Daddy's little pumpkin"
Hoping you make another tour,

Hi, John-
My Sweetie Nora and I attended your concert in Concord, NH last Friday night. Thank you for an emotional, inspiring performance. You put a lump in my throat. I have never seen a crowd as enthusiastic and loving as the bunch that night. Kinda rekindles my faith in humanity.
Godspeed and good health, John.

John,
I grew up in AK surrounded by the most beautiful stuff in the world and when I remember back to those days... driving to go fishin' every weekend... your songs make up the soundtrack. Brings tears to my eyes. My dad and I have had our share of ups and downs through the years (I was an instant alkie @ 13) but we find common ground in our misunderstanding when one says to the other "remember this one?"... "Grampa wore his suit to dinner" or "Woke this morn'n". The love of your music is an unspoken connection for us that can't be broken.
I can say that it was sometimes to my surprise when I awoke to what the hell it was exactly that I'd been singing about since I was 6 (There's a hole in daddy's arm??) At that age it was the just the melody that was so enchanting... (hell I'd make my own words sometimes cuz I couldn't figure out just what you were saying... (And they don't know how lucky they are... they could've been struck by a bolt of lighting... or raped by a mean or a teen??) Pretty funny now that I look back on it. I have to say (although I'm not sure why) that I'd spend a lot of time singing "Hello in There" at the top of my lungs in the "john" trying to relax when I was a kid.
Anyway, not sure what compelled me to write this stuff except to tell you that your music it a part of what I loved about childhood and is a special part of what fond memories my pops and I have in common.
Emily - Las Vegas, NV
You made me love you! I saw you play at trolley square with my dad when I was 10. I am now 34. You and Steve Goodman are the only thing musically that my dad and I ever agreed on. I really love your music and it reminds me of all the times I hung out with my dad. Your really a poet. Thanks you for all the good music.
Much Love,
Emily

Hey Mr. Prine my name is Josh. I grew up listening to my dad play your songs on his acoustic with his brother and friend and have always wanted to be able to see you live with my old man. It just happens that his brother and friend are coming up from PA this weekend to bring my grandmother home and you're playing in Burlington! Needless to say we have tickets and can't wait to see you this Saturday. I just want you know how much it means to me to be able to do that with him. See you at the show!!
Joy Adler - Albany and New York City, New York
John, you continue to inspire me with your incredible songwriting... ! I ran into one of your musicians on the Aran Islands Ireland, last summer. I was singing one of your songs in a pub, and he was singing along, said you were playing Galway music fest the following day, but we had to perform in Dublin... he was the nicest guy...
It would be a dream come true to duet with you.. or if you ever need support to open.... I'm there on a dime.. thanks for a lifetime of incredible songs! Joy Adler - http://www.myspace.com/joyadler

I joined the U S Navy in 19 and 76 and 2years later met a guy who would become my best friend. He turned me on to John Prine before we even realized we were going to be friends. He is from Mississippi and if he reads this he will know who i am talking about. Thanks Bro for the best music for any occasion even after ALL THESE years and remember the SAN DIEGO

When I was a wee lad, I would listen to the music that my folks had stashed in the sideboard of our record player, one of the albums contained a cover of PARADISE by Tom T. Hall. I must have sung that song to myself a million times as I walked to the bus stop and stomped around the woods.
I never did know who wrote PARADISE until I was listening to a folk singer in Valdez Alaska and I requested the song by singing her a few lines. She then told me who Mr. Prine was and from that date (summer of 89) on I was hooked.
I have listened to the Great Mr. Prine as often as I could ever since. Two weeks ago I went to see his concert in Rochester MN and I must say it was like seeing and old friend for the first time.
John Prine is the best! Long Live John Prine!
jpparadiseI understand from a previous interview done in a Wisconsin paper, you were noted as stating you wanted to entertain smaller venues. I have a deal for you! Yep - you could come up to Canada - bypass all them eastern provinces - get right in to the thick of things - Beautiful British Columbia! Yep, we have 2010 in Vancouver - that will be far too crowded in any venue for you to play. My suggestion is for you to have your promoters look at Kamloops, B.C. teehee, there is only one place other than a beer parlor for you to play. It's simple. When all is said and done - you, your family, and crew - could travel a road trip - 2 hours north. Bed and Breakfast $75.00 - Rainbow Trout abound! It is Paradise.

I first heard the legend that is John Prine on a BBC programme in the 70s called The Old Grey Whistle Test and I thought his songs were inspired. In the late 70s & 80s I got the chance to visit the USA with the Royal Navy and on each visit I scoured the record shops for any albums I could find. Later whilst serving with NATO I used my American Navy counterparts to order CDs through their commissary as we were unable to use that facility and I have both vinyl and CDs to this day. My question John is do you have plans to tour England and in particular the north of England? I would love to see you live in concert and share in the unique atmosphere you seem to create from on stage. Look forward to a tourvery soon with utmost respect - Ben Hall

Hi! Just went to your web site to check concert dates. Lots of lucky people in the South! Please come back to Seattle soon. We will be first in line (or rather on-line, on-the-phone, etc.) to buy tickets. You are an important part of our history--which keeps getting longer. Best to you. Kris

Hello,
Many years ago (27 years) I first heard a John Prine song for the first time in my life and I loved it!!! (guess it was Dear Abby).
Time went by and there were years , the kids grew up, that I forgot all about your music. But never entirely.
And now I'm hooked to your songs again, and even more then years ago. I know that you were having some concerts in the U.K. last year, but it was impossible for me to join one of your concerts.
Don't know if there is a John Prine fan-club in Holland and even I don't know if there are enough people enjoying your music as much as I do in Holland.
So my question to you is, is there any possibility that you will ever give a concert in The Netherlands? It would be my ultimate dream and I hope that there are a lot more people here who love your music. It must be!!!
Please let me know, with all my kindest regards, Tineke . e-mail; tienwijn@hotmail.com

Hi,
I am somewhat new to your music and I am becoming a bigger fan every new song I hear. My husband and I our attending your concert at Red Rock in a few weeks and I can't wait. My brother introduced me to your music and sadly he was killed in a car crash this fall, he left behind twins Peter and Cossette who ere not even 2 and his wife was 7 months pregnant. She had the baby in February and named her Codi after he daddy she never got to meet. I have found that lisetening to your music has helped get through this time somehow. In Unwed Fathers there is a line that I love, your daddy never meant to hurt you ever he just don't live here but you got his eyes. That line just breaks my heart, because it is so true about my brother and his kids. I just wanted to thank you for making wonderful music and I look forward to hearing new stuff and finding old stuff and super excited for June and Colorado!!

Seen John Friday April 11, 2008 in Rochester, MN was the best concert I have ever been too. Hoping to go to Morrison Colorado, to see John again in June!!!!

John Prine has been my musical hero for a long, long time now. I first heard of him when my brother played Dear Abby off of the John Prine Live CD and it blew me over. Then, I was forever hooked when I heard Sam Stone.
I'm an Cavalry officer in Iraq for my second tour. His music has always been a release for me. No matter what I've seen, done, or experienced, I can turn on John and everything just feels better.
Thanks, John for being true and honest. Not for nothing, but I've written a collection of songs about what I've experienced over this last 5 years at war, and I'd love to share them with you. I think it needs to be heard.
Keep em coming,

I am a 29 year old man, from the Santee Sioux Indian Reservation in Nebraska. John Prine's words, and songs helped shape my life, every song he wrote, I can identify with some part of my life. There were times in my life his words, soothed my soul or put into words what I felt in my heart. Not many Indian people listened to John around here, I was the exception, I also changed that now everyone I know loves your music. I don't think my life would be complete until I someday meet you just to let you genuinely know what you have meant to me. It would be the highlight of my life if I could get an autograph from you. Or some kind of verification that you saw these words. I could go on, and on, but will end here. Thank you John Prine from a profoundly awed Indian man from Nebraska. My e-mail address is one_fine_native2006@yahoo.com
AL INMON Kerrville, TexasI am a new fan and am ashamed to admit it but just this week saw John on Austin City Limits for the first time in my life, and was blown away by his music. I write my own music and I appreciate John's lyrics as they are like mine. I grew up in the 50's and 60's with Hank Williams, and the Beatles and love good sounds. John has good sounds! I would love to go see him live but here in Texas?? Will John ever have an engagement in Austin, or San Antonio? Please let me know if you will? my email is suealin@ktc.com
sincerely,

Wayne RobbinsI saw the greatest Austin City Limits many years ago, sometime between 1980 and 1984. It was John Prine. As a Vietnam vet, I was already a fan but had never heard him live. I got to do so in Montana about 15 years ago. I took my 2 young daughters and they still love his music today. When I bought my first CD player, his "greatest hits" was my first CD purchase.
But my point is -- I would pay a lot of money for a copy of the Austin City Limits production that I saw so long ago -- especially if it could be reproduced as a DVD. It was without doubt one of the greatest perfomances I ever experienced.
Can anyone tell me if it is available in any format?
Thanks,
Wayne Robbins

I finally found some of your songs on u-tube, I have every album you made before 1999 in vynal. Actually, my husband is the one who bought your albums. I wish i could come to one of your concerts. So you need to come to OKC and the Zoo Ampatheater. That is my favorite place to go for concerts.
Really I wanted to say I am glad to see your still performing and say your songs have inspired me more than most preachers. I taught for 1 year (the most horrible experience I ever had) and when I would go in and the class was acting up I would start to sing your songs. The songs seem to always have an appropriate message for the day. Well the children know who you are, and they were amazed at some of the words I would say, and I would have to admit that they came from your songs. You are what I call a GOD gift to people like me! The songs you sing can comfort the hurting soul and lift up a hurt beaten down rolled over and kicked soul. I know because even today I sing the song that has the lyrics "Some days a diamond some days a stone." I told my neighbor about you and she visited yesterday and I clicked on the utube link, by the way there are several links there where the video was taped from the audience. She was impressed and kept clicking on another song of yours. Hang in there. You have a wonderful gift.

What's to say, major fan of one of America's greatest songwriters (right up there with Kris Kristofferson). Not a day goes by without a JP song or a strum on my guitar trying to sound like the man himself and not getting very close at all I might add, but it does feel good.
Thanks for the songs and keep them coming for years to come. All the best John.

My John Prine story is actually a Howie Epstein story. It was 1995. My sweetie and I were living it up in Cancun at the Ritz on a fancy-schmantzy company paid trip. Poolside drinks, fishing, snorkeling...the works! It was a grand time. On the final night of the trip there was a black tie company dinner. Comedians Howie Mandel and Paul Rodriquez entertained us. Afterward, there was a meet and greet. The line was long. Then it was our turn. My husband shook their hands. I was next. I nervously turned to Mandel but instead of being polite I blurted out, "Hey Howie...great work on that new Album, Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings...WE LOVE THAT ALBUM! " He said, "What?" and I said, "You know...John Prine." Howie was still confused. I said, "You're in the band with John Prine, right?" Then, with a clearly disgusted and annoyed wince of his eyeballs, he shook his head, "No, that's not me" he said. Now, certainly Mr. Mandel had no reason to get all pissy at me...he was in a most delicate position of losing a fan. So without missing a beat, but with all the sincerity and honesty I could muster I sighed, "Oh, I thought you were multi-talented." His mouth just dropped open and stood there stunned. Then, the photographer snapped our picture commemorating our moment forever.
Now, I'm not exactly proud of this story but some stories need to be told. I'm no fool, but we can all get foolish from time to time due to our combined ignorance and excitement of the moment. Certainly this was one of those moments. To this day, my husband and I laugh about our Howie story. "Oh, I thought you were multi-talented" has become the family joke now and will become lore and legend in our family. All because of Lost Dogs.
I see that Howie Mandel is on TV now helping to give away suitcases full of money propped up by pretty girls...geez, I guess that takes a certain amount of talent. For some reason, I feel a little bit responsible.
Well anyway, I hope the real Howie Epstein is looking down on us now and getting a chuckle out of this bumbling story of mixed-up names.
My husband and will be in the audience at the concert on Saturday night in Minneapolis. We promise to stay out of Mr. Prine's way to save him from an embarrassing fan moment.

John-I'm sure you don't remember me but I am Robert & Evelyn Leonard's daughter-in-law who are great friends of Mary & Jack from their Fishing Resort in AR. My father-in-law Robert Leonard was the local Wildlife Biologist in that area. We met years ago in Mary's living room where you and your brother were so kind to play for us and answer my may questions. Anyway..I am now a member of a DailyStrength Support Group and belong to the HepC and Music for the Souls communities. I have a dear friend on this site that has HepC also but her sad story is that her son has had 14 brain surgerys. You are his favorite musician and he has requested that your song "Please don't bury me" be played at his funeral. His mom has asked me to try to get an autographed photo of you for her son. It would mean the world to her and him. By the way..I'm sure you heard that Mary & Jack's Fishing Resort (restaurant, cabins, etc) was destroyed by recent storms here in AR - so very sad - but ya know Jack - he was immediately up and rebuilding. If there is anyway possibile for you to send this autog photo we would be etermally grateful.....I can be reached by email at sharon2424@sbcglobal.net. If possible to send photo let me know how to provide you with address and instructions on how to receive. God Bless you! Sharon I'm gonna cut/paste copy of message I received from friend from support group: On 04/08/08, 05:07pm howdidthishappentome wrote: OMG!!! You have access to John Prine??!!! I have all of his music. He is my favorite of all time. He should be more well known. He's the best!! Can you get an autographed photo???? My 18 year old son has had 14 brain surgeries, and he wants us to play John Prine's "Please Don't Bury Me" at his funeral. I told him that's up to his Dad because if he dies, I'm going with him. I have four sons, but I can't imagine life without one of them. Let me tell you too....the medication for the disease is worse than the disease. I've been in and out of the hosp. so many times dehydrated, and needing pain meds for migraine, that I've lost count. Oh my God, girl, my hair is thinning so bad too. I didn't walk into this gunfight packing a slingshot and a few pebbles...I will kill this dragon even if I die with it! I won't quit. Good luck to you. Drink lots of water or vitamin waters. Stay away from caffienated drinks cause they will dehydrate you fast. Godspeed!!

Hello Mr. Prine, My name is James, I'm a musician and street performer in Calgary Alberta, Canada. I've been a big fan of your music since a good friend of mine played Common Sense for me about 8 years ago, when we were both in high school. The great Compromise was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. I was wondering if you will be coming to Western Canada soon. Calgary has a long tradition of supporting Country, blues, and folk music. Actually a few years ago Rolling Stone Magazine listed Calgary's King Edward Hotel bar as the third best blues bar in North America (it was since shut down by the city because of electrical hazards). And of course every July we host the Calgary Stampede rodeo and exhibition, as well as the Calgary Folk fest, and Calgary blues and roots fest. You have a great following in this city, and I would love to see you here soon. I might have to find a way to Colorado to see you and Emmylou Harris this June.

my story is that john prine has been my best freind for 22 years at least. He has seen me through things most people don't even survive. He has seriously been there for me always. Once I was involuntarily in a state mental hosp., music was one thing I could have and I am convinced that because of john prine i am free and healthy today!! He saved me just as if he had actually been there. I was shot up with a drug called haldol for being difficult, a couple of times. John helped me with his songs keeping me strong and touching my heart. Giving me hope. I have never met him, I've seen him, but he has no idea who I am and he has been my knight in shining armor. He soothes my mind and my heart and is always there when I need him. Thanks so much

One hell of a Folkin guy!
So I just discovered how great of a musician you are from a guy that came into the bar I work at in Pittsburgh Pa. His name is Brian and well he is a loyal follower of yours. I asked him about his tattoos of flying dogs on his arms and he told me an artist that paints by using a brush in his mouth painted them and he liked them so much he got them tattooed on his arms and turns out the same artist did some cover art on an album you put out. The funny thing is he told me that you were in a hotel in the room next to him and he knocked on your door and you let him in to drink and play some poker. And on another a cation he invited you to have some coffee with him and you showed up and hung out which I think is very awesome and you don't find that to often in people anymore.I hope you know who I am talking about if not O'well he turned me on to your poetic song writing and I think you are great.I just broke up with my girlfriend and find a lot of your songs make me feel better. Well thanks for being who you are hope to see you in Pittsburgh someday soon.

Hi John
Don't be alarmed its just the title of a book by a guy called Tom Reynolds, about the 52 most depressing songs he's ever heard. I bought it because it's got Sam Stone in there, he's actually quite complimentary about you, unlike most of the other songs and writers featured. Its published By Random House in Australia if you don't know about it and want to check it out.
Anyway, saw you at The Symphony Hall in Birmingham, England (my home town) a couple of years back and loved the show. Also about 20 years ago at The Mean Fiddler in London. Favourite song is Far From Me, which is the best about to be jilted song I've ever heard.
Come back to the UK soon !

I was in a music store in Kinvara on Galway Bay a few years back - and I bought a used cd of Sharon Shannon - your song "Love Love Love" is so pretty.
I live in St. Paul, MN now (where you have dinner after breakfast in London) and we are so excited to hear you at the State Theatre on April 12th!
I wonder, if you don't already have a harmony singer for "Long Monday" do you think I could sing harmony with you?

Hi, my name is Marilyn (nee Adams) Beuse you may or may not remember my family. My mom Grace (neeAdams )West and your mom Cotton were very good friends during the 1950's. There were 7 kids, 4boys and 3 girls. After we moved to Northlake it became difficult for our moms to keep in touch. We lived across from E. Proviso High School on 1st Ave, Maywood , IL and you lived across the tracks south of the high school on the East side of the street. I believe there were 4 boys and your dad's name is Bill. I can remember your mom telling my mom that she never did any hard housework, she said you boys and your father did it all.
I found your ad in my local paper after your concert date was over. I thought if you could take time and send my brother Bill, who is an avid fan of yours, an e-mail or an autograph with your photo it would make him the happiest and proudest person alive. During the last year and half we almost lost Bill a couple of times because of his lung disease and a few other problems he acquired while in Viet Nam. He lives with our brother Bobby who also was in Nam, they look out for each other. Once Bill even called me pretty late one night just to prove to someone that he knew you when you were a young boy before you became an entertainer. Hoping you can find time to do this favor for a fan it will be like an early birthday gift, his birthday is in June. You can't even begin to know how an autograph or e-mail from you would brighten his day.
Bill can be reached by e-mail wladams512005@yahoo.com and the home address is ;
William L. Adams, 205 Chestnut St., Apple River, IL 61001 maybe you could send one for Bobby as well same address to Robert E. Adams his e-mail is adams52@peoplepc.com
Thank you his sister Marilyn

Dear John Prine - I just want to say how much my wife and I appreciate your music. We "discovered" John Prine in the mid 70's, and saw you play at the Fargo Theater in about 1976? My wife has said that there are only a couple of artists that she would like to see, you and James Tayor made the list. I have 3rd row seats for the State Theater on April 12. This woodtick from "up nort" is bringing his bride of 28 years, down to the big city to see you play again, some 30 years later. She does not know what we are doing, just that we are going to the cities for something. Play whatever you will my friend, they are all excellent!!!! - KC

Having been a fan since 1970 I finally got to meet you after the concert in Sheboygan. I mentioned that I first saw you at a club in Chicago and now I think it was called Earl's. I've been able to see you every time you have passed by the Milwaukee area but two of the most memorable were at the Main Stage at Summerfest 1976 and a show at UW-Milwaukee. It was your birthday and when the crowd began to sing Happy Birthday you looked to be sincerely touched. After al these years I still get a lump in my throat whenever I see you do Hello In There or Sam Stone. Good luck, good health and many thanks.
Mike
PS My wife Marie was thrilled to meet you also.

My wife was born in a small area of Kentucky known as Quality, just outside of Lewisburg. From the age of three the first song she ever learned to sing was Paradise as her father played and sang it daily on an old beat up six string he brought back from Vietnam. She grew up hearing many of John's songs but Paradise was always her favorite. Her father passed away in Lewisburg when she was sixteen due to cancer believed to be caused from materials used in Vietnam and they played that song at his funeral. Her mother decided to move the kids further north and they ended up in town called Pell Lake, WI which is just outside of Twin Lakes, WI. So there is a unique bond my wife has with John's music in one way it reminds her of home and in another it reminds her of her father. 11 years after his death she still cries at night, she still cries at John's Shows when Paradise is played, and it may sound weird but she keeps a small container of her father's ashes with her at every show. We have been married three years now and I have attended two John Prine shows, she has attended several, the most recent being the Sheboygan Show on March 29th. I am a signed musician myself and have a very rigorous schedule sometimes, my wife has consistently put her life on hold for me to follow my dreams many times and has never asked of anything. She never asks anything of the world around her and she has always been the backbone for her family. While at the show I spoke to Mitch (Merchandise Guy) and he was extremely busy so I sort of got blown off so I figured I would inquire around for availability of meet and greet passes or where I can purchase backstage passes for my wife to meet John. I've been together with her 6 years now and six years she has never asked for anything and has never questioned when I needed to by a 1200 dollar piece of guitar equipment. The night we left the Sheboygan concert she said " I would love to meet him, shake his hand, and say thank you for helping me keep y daddy close to me." My wife has made my dreams come true on a daily basis and I rarely get the chance to do anything nice for her as she never wants anything. So the question is how do you fulfill the dreams of someone who gives everything and asks for nothing. John's music has helped to make it easier for me to understand for her how losing a father at a young age can be devastating, but it has also shown me how it also has helped to bring her closer with her father's memories on a daily basis. So in the least Thanks John for that. If anyone knows or has any info on how to get passes to meet John it would be greatly appreciated. I would really love to make my wife's dreams come true as she has made mine come true for 6 years now. Thanks and Take care.

Hi, there!
My brother, Bryan, husband Scott and I have been singing along and listening to you since we were little babies of 20. 30 years later, where has the time gone? Oh, yes, it's gone lots of places but we still love you! We dropped the ball, didn't get tickets before you sold out in Minneapolis. If you don't get too many beggars like us, maybe you'll see your way clear to call me up and invite us yourself. Who knows, eh? If not, welcome to our State and hope you have a good time. Can we take you out for sushi before the concert? Or, bring your order backstage?!!
Billy Cope - Taylor Falls, MN

Yeah, I was playing at a little place called 3 Putt Willies, and your cousins from Vine Grove came out to see me. I had ran into them at the BackStage Cafe when I saw Jason Wilbur, really enjoyed his show. I hope all is well for you, really enjoyed myself. I met this finger style picker Tommy Emmanuel from Austrailia, he's awesome, saw his concert at John Hardin, High School here in Hardin County, few miles away from your cousins house, they have a nice Performing Arts Center. The acoustics are great, it really would be a great Venue for you. http://www.myspace.com/officialdocdockery
Anyway, take care John, hope things are good with you....

Hey,
Just bought a poster - the hatch show print. Heck, the video showing how it was made is worth $20.00. Thanks for the deal. I'd buy some albums, but already have them all. John's music and lyrics are a natural anti-depressant with no side effects except better humor!

I have a request. Would you play "Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian" at JazzFest for my wife, Debbie, and me? I found my "one true love" again after 40 years and introduced her to your great music. She hasn't heard this song yet and I know she will love it.
Thanks in advance to a "true legend" from 2 of your fans.

I grew up listening to your music. To this day my dad and I sing all your old songs when ever we get together... Grandpa was a carpenter, there's a hole in daddys arm, please don't bury me, etc. I love your music and am looking forward to seeing you live in Rochester, mn. Thanks so much for all the great lyrics, they're especially nice around the campfires. See you soon.

Not really a story. I have loved listening to John Prine's music and lyrics since I was 17 or so. 30 plus years I guess. I'm fianlly going to see and hear him live in Green Bay, WI 3/28. I can hardly wait. I wonder if Mr. Prine reads these while on the road and wonder if he ever plays A Good Time, or Far From Me or Blue Umbrella in concerts ... There are so many great ones by Mr Prine it's pretty foolish to pick just a couple but these are real good ones.
I have spent countless hours of my life trying to learn a few of his songs on guitar. I enjoyed each minute. Time well spent, eh?
See ya Friday. It's going to be a great night. I am excited.

Dear John, I was introduced to your music , while a student at the University of South Alabama, a fellow sang a couple of your songs at a little club near campus, called Jags. I then went to a music store in Biloxi, Ms and ordered
Sweet revenge and then John Prine and Bruised Orange. I find it difficult to describe what your songs have meant to me, but can say that you gave voice to an emotion heartofore not expressed adequately by any other song writer. You songs are both touching and vent a harmonic that reverberates a sentiment, that says I have felt that and I wish I could have said it half as well. I played your music for my grandfather, Julius Prine Sr., before he died. He laughed at "your Flag decal" , but stumbled a little with, Sam Stone. He was from a family of ministers and gospel singers, and had trouble dealing with the phrase Jesus died for nothing I suppose. I really want to express my gratitude for the pleasure and satisfaction I have felt due to your down to earth artistry, that is expressive, but not over the heads of simple people, who can identify with your art. Thank you Mr. John Prine!!

Love to see you on YouTube...found a great line in a comment there, on your "Hello In There," solo from the 1990s...
from a guy thanking someone for turning him on to you: . . ."Previously, I was unaware of this song."

Hahaha....well....it's kinda hard to put so much of a story in so little a box but oh well....I'll try. In fact....if there's a budding John Prine enthusiast out there that can put a melody to this....I'm sure it would give everyone a chuckle! So feel free!
“Rediscovering John Prine”
Ten years ago I had it all …..I’d had some life ….and had a ball,
I’d been blessed from up above …..Much more than most….With so much love.
I felt a fraud by playing blues….I never thought I’d ever lose.
Music was my drug of choice …..With passion for a song or voice,
Embarrassed with a life of glee….Others had more shit than me.
Back then I listened to John Prine…..He appealed to heads like mine.
I knew back then it couldn’t last…..My time for shit had gone… and passed.
I thought I’d missed my allocation……from the boss of our creation.
But I was wrong and my time came….In bucketfuls…. sent with my name.
My love was lost; my world demolished….His handout was quite slick and polished.
I lost it all and lost my mind….they locked me up….and were unkind,
Everything I had was gone……but for those clever words of John!
John Prine the prophet……you forecast…..that happy times will never last.
I think about the missing years…. but you predicted my own tears.
John Prine the Poet…..you foretold…..our path won’t always be of gold.
For years I couldn’t play your stuff…..my wife said that she’s heard enough.
She never liked you I’m afraid…..your music… just …sat there….unplayed.
Forgive me…but my time alone… was just so short….and she might phone.
You weren’t forgotten…..just postponed….everything we had….she owned!
I think it was the menopause… that gave this angel teeth and claws….
This metamorphic maid had changed…..it made me mad….and quite deranged!
I now live …quite all alone….no fear of fire….no telephone.
I’m well…..they tell me….I’m OK. I take it steady….every day.
I’m getting better…..getting fine…..little things begin to shine…..
I play my music every day…..and most of all…..I play John Prine.
Years ago I never knew…..the heartache that you saw….was true.
When you’re alone….or in a band…..finally………....I understand!
John Prine the prophet……you forecast…..that happy times will never last.
I think about the missing years…. but you predicted my own tears.
John Prine the Poet…..you foretold…..our path won’t always be of gold.
Written by Keith Barnett as a thank you to John Prine 21/03/08 after a crappy year but now laughing again!
Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I visit this site late at night while I'm trying to write music. My music sounds really different than my favorite John Prine songs, but I am trying to write it about the same feelings that your songs first articulated for me when I was a small child having big feelings. The way the songs make empathy instead of narcissism out of those feelings is something I will be trying all my life to do as well as you do. My sense of social and emotional justice come straight from your songs. Your songs are like parents --they are so important to me. The lenses of compassion and humor through which they so carefully observe whoever is sitting right next to us -- that attitude, and that activity we can learn over and over. First in the song, and then on some people near by -- the easy ones, then on ourselves, then on the people it's hard to feel that way about -- we can if we try. John, for so many of us your songs are our everything. Thank you so so much.

I wanted to say hello, and let you know my friend is going to play "In spite of ourselves" at her upcoming wedding.
I absolutely love the song! Even if I think there is nothing wrong with putting ketchup on scrambled eggs.. lol
anywho.. I really enjoyed listening.
Take care

I have been a faithful follower since i was only 8 years old. That is the first time I remember hearing you sing. I have been infatuated with the hopes and dreams of someday meeting you and just shaking your hand. I have seen many shows but not enough. All your songs make sense and people relate. You know that..that is why you sing them. I am from Eastern Ky and work in the mines. I sing your songs as words of advice to some of the men in the mines who are having trials or just a bad day. It always brings a smile to their faces. Guys even call safety meetings just to get together and here me sing your songs to them. I tell the guys "they make things called MP3 players and they are simple to use" but they just like hearing it sung. I encourage them all to go see you for themselves as I can in no way do your songs justice. I am just an ol' Appalachian that has lived his life by the words of your songs. I thank you for the inspiration you provide me every morning on my way to work in my cd player and on the way home. Through the day I just butcher them up by singing them myself. My 3 yr old son who's name is "Cash" Parks is now singing your songs around the house and always wants to "take a ride in dad's fishin truck and listen to "Pon Prine". He's just 3, can't pronounce it right but we all know who he is talking about. I realize you have a lot of fans and probably will not even have time to read this but I just felt the need to write this...not sure why.
your faithful appalachian follower,

We made it to Memphis. An 8 1/2 hour drive that turned into 13+ because of the snow and ice. Didn't get to see the opening act, but arrived in time to see all of John's performance. Totally worth the trip. John has been my favorite singer/songwriter for some time now. But honestly he sounded better than ever. The sound at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis is incredible. I wondered if John was playing a different guitar? Everything was so clear and smooth! You could hear every note and word. I sure wish John would return to Oklahoma for a show!

I have recently been seeing this newer commerical on TV for JC Penny with a background song that I know I have heard before. After a couple of times of seeing/hearing it I jumped off the chair and proclaimed "that is a song from a John Prine album!"
After searching through my JP albums, cassettes and CD's, I found that it is "Killing the Blues" which is on both the Pink Cadillac and Great Days- John Prine Anthology albums. While it is a song that was not penned by the great man himself (Rolly Salley is credted for writing it) it is indeed a great song performed by John on two of his album releases.
I can now tell my family and friends who are humored by my idolization of John that a song he sucessfully performed and recorded is now airing in a commercial that is being played during prime time (or maybe PRINE TIME) television!
And I recently read Johnny Cash's autobiography, and in that book the man in black mentioned that he liked to listen to John Prine when he was at home. Coming from such a C&W legend, that is a great compliment to John Prine. But all us Prine fans know why...
Sincerely,
jason sefrhans the artist...

John - Just got back from your show in Little Rock with my sister, Susan, (The Okie Sisters). You only get better with age, kind of like a fine wine! That was without a doubt the best show I have ever seen. Your
darling wife obviously puts a "spark" in you. I was married once before, about 35 years ago...it almost lasted a year, so it doesn't really count - but the ONLY good thing to come out of that (besides a divorce) was that he turned me on to you! Can't wait for you to come to Tulsa...we must have back stage passes...so would you put a word in with whatever higher being there might be, besides you? You are the only person I listen to, and Jason's CD...you have done a good job with that boy!!!
Love you...(only second to my husband)

In 97,my ex wife and I totaled our van on the way to a two-day JP appearance in Chicago. When we got to the show, I spotted his brother and told him the story and added "and we still made it to the show." He said that was worth meeting John and took us backstage afterward to have our pic taken with him. A year later, the bitch left me and stole the pic, along with pics of us with Tom Paxton, David Allan Coe and Noel Paul Stookey. MY regret is that she took the pic of John. Guess I'll never get another chance to total a van. Lou Snyder (rupp_arena@hotmail.com)

DEAR John: Had the opportunity to see you in london last year. I have every piece you have recorded (that I know of) and thought your performance was fantastic. would be willing to travel great distances to see you again. I do a bit of poetry and that sort of stuff (not a musician I,m a crane operator). Wondered if you would like to have a look at or just build on the stuff I have been scribblin'" down. You would get a kick out of the one where the guy has a great love for his 1960 COUGAR, knowing Mercury had not produced one yet he then describes his wife. A REAL COUGAR. I also have one about a guy who had a girl run into his car in the high scholl parking lot and he fell in love with her.She smashed his car and stole his heart.Well I don,t have to tell you they married, had children and some years later she decided she didn,t love him any more. Then came the bitter divorce. That was the day she smashed his heart and stole his car.ha ha Any way bud been a pleaser just rappin,to ya , hope to see you again soon in our neck of the woods or hell we may travel to someone elses,s keep up the good work and I,ll keep scribblin'". If by chance you are coming back to Canada soon one of your staffers might drop us a line. thanks !!!!!!!!!! po.box 1146 Corunna Ont. Canada

I hope after we left the Little Rock show(after the first set) someone threw out the people in Mezzanine 1 who made it miserable for about 100 of us. I loved the setting, the sound the venue until the redneck idiots blew it for us. One early visit by a 70ish usher to tell them there were complaints was all that happened. No security. When someone said, "Hey man, give us a break" one guy said,"Turn around and shut up" and this continued. Through every story John told was yelling, whistling, and laughing. Wife and I spent good money to see one our favs and may never have a chance again due to no security and some drunken idiots. We still Love John, but may never see him live again. It's sad.
Susan - Tulsa, Okla.
John....My sister and I just returned from Little Rock after seeing your concert. John....that was the best one yet. Jason just gets better and better. You were so enthusiastic about what you were doing. Your wife is a doll. I can,t wait to see you again in Tulsa. Your music always makes me feel so good. We love ya John.....
Susan - Calhoun, GA
If you really read these, I just want to say thank you. My husband died last Father's Day of leukemia. He was such a huge fan of yours. Your music added so much to his life...even in the hospital. On his birthday 2006, he was hospitalized and the only thing he wanted was one of his old picking buddies to come up and play some Prine. Which they did. :-)
We also discovered Mama and Them while in the hospital---I can't tell you how many times we watched that!
The last time he saw you was in Chattanooga, August 06. We weren't even married yet, but that's one of the best memories that I have of him.
His"funeral" was at the land he owned by the river where we sprinkled his ashes. Someone dug up a tape of he and his band back from the early 80's where he was singing some of your songs. Of course, his friends brought their guitars and "Paradise" sprung up spontaneously once the crowd left. That was a song he dearly loved.
So I just wanted to say thanks.
Susan

JOHN - THANKS FOR COMING TO LITTLE ROCK'S ROBINSON MAR 2008. I HAD JUST BEEN INTRODUCED TO YOUR MUSIC A FEW MONTHS BEFORE, AND HAD JUST LEARNED TO PLAY "PLEASE DON'T BURY ME". I HAD A BLAST SINGING ALONG WITH YOU TO THAT SONG SATURDAY NIGHT. I JUST PICKED UP "THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN" TODAY - THAT'S GREAT STUFF, MAN! JUST PLAIN HILARIOUS! YOU HAVE A NEW FAN.

I attended my first John Prine concert last night in the snow in Memphis Friday March, 7th 2008. I have been a fan for over 25 years having known the lyrics to every song on Prime Prine and other albums. I really love the Fair and Square album with my favorite song being Clay Pigeons. I wanted to share that my mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and although she know's my name is Jeff she thinks I'm her brother. Her favorite song of all time is Paradise. As I said I was at the concert last night and I loved every minute of the show. But as the concert came to a close, my wish was to hear Paradise. The last song John sang last night was Paradise and I got emotional which is not like me. Thank you John you are my favorite singer songwriter and you put on one hell of a show. Thank you Jeff R

Hey John, I finally get to hear you live in Little Rock tomorrow night after years of enjoying your songs in the car and singing a lot of them at parties! In the late 1970's my wonderful godmother visited me from Racine WI and I was playing some of your music. She said you were her nephew, and referred to you as "little Johnny Prine", that she remembers you running around in knee pants when you were a child. Her name was Elizabeth "Bessie" Adamson. She was a wonderful family friend, my mother worked beside her during WWII -- and she was so proud of you.
Anyway, I am so looking forward to hearing you live -- I go to Mountain View every year for the Spring Folk Festival and understand you have been there on occasion -- Maybe I'll get a chance to shake your hand at Robinson! You rock! Nancy Burleson (naburleson@suddenlink.net)

I saw John at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore in Sept. of 2007. My kids and I got to see him after the show as he was leaving. I have a pic of him on my cellphone with me. I am from the way more rural area of MD. I have been a fan of John for about 30 years. Everyone that I have ever played his music for has also become a fan. What a awesome guy. I just adore him. He gave my daughter just what she asked for a hug. It was so darn sweet. I hope he plays in the area this year, we will be there.

Dear John Prine,
My father has been a fan of yours since i was just a little girl. He is a guitar player, and as i grew up I heard your songs daily, as he played them all on the guitar, and sang your lyrics with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. In fact, as soon as my hands were big enough to make the chords, he was teaching me your songs. "That's the way the world goes round" was the first song I ever learned to play. He had always said that he felt like you were the kind of man that could join him at the ol' kitchen table, pick a few tunes, tell some stories, and generally B.S. one another, just like one of his old buddies. Well, just recently he has been diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the bladder, and we spent an evening last week playing those old songs that we used to play together. I jokingly told him I was gonna call you up on the horn, so you could come over and hang out with us. He told me that he felt more like a brother to you now more than ever, because you are a survivor yourself. We went to see you together on your first tour after your recovery, and you spoke about how it was such a great pleasure to be out there playing and doin what you do again. The crowd gave you a standing ovation. I think that every person in that place felt where you were coming from. It was a very powerful moment. Dad is beginning a tough battle. He will undergo a major surgery in the next couple weeks, endure 2-3 month recovery, and then begin chemo and radiation treatments. We are all pretty scared, but we remain positive and tight as ever as a family. You have spoken to him through your music over the years, and have become an absolute inspiration now more than ever. Even though we don't know one another, you have certainly made an impact on our lives, and from my entire family, we thank you for that... Jessica Bahl jezabahl@hotmail.com

John,
What a great show you gave us in Columbus, OH. The Palace Theatre was such a beautiful place. First show for me, sorry. I have been a fan since I was a child. I grew up on Bob Dylan and Grateful Dead. So, naturally - I got introduced to you not long after.
Actually, while I was at The Palace Theatre. I picked up Fair & Square and an air freshener, because I think everyone should own one. I can't quit this album. Every song is my favorite : Crazy As A Loon, She Is My Everything, Some Humans Ain't Human, The Other Side Of Town, and Bear Creek Blues. It is 5 stars!
Truly, John you have an amazing voice and I am so happy to see and hear such an improvement over the years. You will always be a fan of mine and I hope I can be one of yours, as well.
Also, if you want to contact me for pictures - I have some from 2/23/08.
With Love,

The first show I seen in person was at the Park West in Chicago back in about "78" along with Steve Goodman, That night is still very vivid in my memory. When you introduced Steve he came out in a robe, wings and a halo. He was the "Angel from Montgomery". I was so fortunate to sit at the end of the table, butted up against center stage. With me half in my chair and half on the stage all night. I could clearly see the pack of marlboros rolled up in your black tee shirt sleeve. I have since been to 5 more shows in various cities. The most recent in Ann Arbor two summers ago. I managed to get an after show pass and actually met you. I apologize for being so taken that I couldn't even say anything intelligent. I hope you remember me, I was the one with the guitar that you honored me with signing. I grew up on Prine music, living in Kenosha till I was in my thirties. I wanted to talk to you about Lake Marie since it was one of my favorite fishing holes. But I just couldn't get a good conversation with you. Anyway, thank you so much for that autograph on my guitar. I have since retired that guitar and it is hanging on the wall now with you signature shining. I would love to talk with you again and have you meet my son at the Green Bay show. He is a huge fan as well. Is there any chance of getting After Show passes for that? It would make 2 Thiel 's very happy and proud. I hope you read this!! Your fan forever....Bob

I don't have a story worth reading about.. just that i am big fan like everyone else on here... blah blah blah.. but , John, if you really do read these posts then i just want to say how COOL i think it is that Killing the Blues is now heard in the background of the new JC PENNY commercial. .and how even COOLER it is that my teenage daughter was, when it came on, singing along .. AND KNEW THE WORDS.. my job here on earth is complete. I can feel fulfilled as a mother. I know you didn't write it, but you did the words justice. that song gives me chills every time i listen to it. anyway,, please come to the philadelphia area soon .. give me an excuse to get out of the house and see a show. and be somebody's Oldest Baby in the World.. love Trish

For my 50th birthday my wife took me to see John in Columbus Feb. 2008. As a former working musician/ folk singer in NW Ohio from 1976 to 1988 it brought back so many memories of all the John Prine songs I used to play every night of the week in one bar or another. I brought a cassette of two Prine songs I recorded back in the early 80's with quite different arrangements than the originals. These were always among the most requested songs by my loyal fan base back in the day. I gave this tape to the sound man at the Prine concert in Columbus that night and he promised to give it to John. I hope John got a chance to hear them just to
know how deeply he had inspired another musician

I loved your show at the Taft in Cincinnati. And having been a fan for only about 33 years, I' would humbly like to make 2 requests regarding one my favorites "Angel from Montgomery." One is that anytime you have a lady with the band - Bonnie Raitt, Iris, Emmylou, or Maura O'Connell - that she sing the opening verse, and that at least for some of the shows Jason Wilber plays the mandolin during it (Although his slide and other guitar portion was also fabulous.

I was at the Taft show and witnessed everything the mom from indiana talked about. Our group ignored the idiots in front of us and enjoyed seeing you for the first time in years. Thought about yellin out a song but didn't think it dignified, as you get enough of that anyway. Thanks for a great show.
Larry Aurora, IL
I really can't believe this.
I know you have probably heard this a million times, but your music resonates with me more than anything I have ever heard. I am only 34 years old but my soul I believe has been around for millennia. I too write and play and I do it for myself. Oh sure I play the occasional coffee house or bar, but I seem to get more satisfaction out of the street corner or my friends front porch. Of course there is no money in it but to me it is a shame that music is a business corrupted by many opportunistic men that have no concept of music. Only money. Don't get me wrong. Making a living doing what for me is the epitome of true love would be a dream come true. I only wish the musicians and those that love to listen to them could take control of what I believe to be the greatest blessing upon humankind. Thanks for the songs and the stories they envision. I for one am grateful. Sincerely yours, Larry

Mr. Prine -
I've listened to you for so long and now I've escaped the backroom with my own music, and my life is music again from now on. You have painted wonderful pictures for me in the greatest creative place on earth, the Theatre of the Mind.
Peace and thanks again -

Last night my son, daughter in law and I were at Taft in Cincinnati for the John Prine concert. John was amazing as always.
The crowd however seemed to have no respect for the "no drinks, cameras" request. I was stunned by this. John Prine is a legend in my book. My son cut his teeth on Prine music.
I have so much respect for Mr. Prine and his talent and respected his request. As did my son and daughter in law. I feel like we were among very few how did. Women swinging beer bottles in the air, cameras and camera phones everywhere. A man next to me reeking of alcohol passed out about half way through the show.
Mr. Prine, I am so sorry that you were not given the respect you deserve last night in Cincinnati

Dear John :
I just want to say how much you mean to me ,and helped me shuffle my fingers to play guitar and write songs, sing about the orbison moon, and be as crazy as a loon , always your name would be in my conversation if I was not quoting Bob Dylan , father...He said Life can become so defile in the world that even your own mother and father could abandon you and if that should ever happen ,I want you to know that god will always believe in your abilities ,to mend your own ways.
take it with me where ever I go as I do the you.
thank you Francine (mnogeeshiigo) forever email beautiful_day_woman@hotmail.com if you ever need something to do email me. I paint to, I really do

Hi John -
I'll be there to catch your show at the Palace Theatre tonight, the 4th time I've seen you perform in Columbus, OH. This time will be a little different, though. I'll be there solo. The first 3 shows I bought a pair of tickets, one for me and one for 3 different women who all swore on their mommas' graves that the most romantic date in the world was dinner and a John Prine concert. I guess they were all lyin' about that dinner thing, right? :)And damned if that don't sound like a John Prine song, too! You've got my permission to take that sucker and run with it, OK? But I'll be there nonetheless, after quaffing a few Auld Curiosity Ales at Barley's on N High St. Maybe I'll catch you there, too, if the accident will.
Be well -
Smitty in Columbus (aka Loge E, Row B, Seat 17)
TC PRINE FAN
I was first introduced to John Prine In the Fall of 2004 . I was living in Baltimore at the time. My cousin put on "In Spite of Ourselves". I wept with excitement. What a duet! Ever since that cool damp day in Baltimore I have been hooked, that song especially. In 2005, when i moved back home to New York, I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Prine at Town Hall. And wouldn't you know it, I was blessed to see Iris Dement at a Festival in Traverse City, Michigan in 2006, about a month after i moved to Michigan. And wouldn't you know it, after moving to Columbus, OH I get see John Prine play tonight at The Palace Theater. How Cool!!!
But the ultimate would be DeMent and Prine together, I may have to move again to see it. See you Tonight John!!

Dear John,
My fiancee is 29 and a playwright, and you have been one of his greatest influences. He recently got his masters in playwriting, and listens to you when he writes. It is not only your lyrics that inspire him, but your message...that even though he is some guy born and raised in Arkansas with no real connections or money, his voice matters. He can write about the places he knows and loves, and show their beauty.
We are getting married in Eureka Springs in October. If there is any way you'd come and play one song...it would be his dream come true. We'd get you a hotel room and all you could eat and drink, and our first dance would be to one of your songs...it would be the most wonderful beginning to our new lives I could imagine. I know you get emails like this all the time, but we'll cross our fingers...my fiancee worships you, and this would be the greatest gift I could possibly give him...
Best,
Maya

Ola Mr. Prine, A letter from New Mexico. I am a therapist in a state prison and play your music for my guys. Today I played some of them your Some Humans Ain't Humans because we deal with a lot of mean people in prison. I am learning to play the mandolin and am hoping to get the tabs for your songs. My music teacher gave me an assignment to write a song which I did. Do you ever accept songs from novice (AKA-probably really bad) songwriters? You have a huge fan club out here, I can't express how much we love your music. Thank you.

Hi John, I have been a fan for almost 30 years. A few years ago in Kansas City I purchased a studio cut on vinyl to what I believe may have been the beginnings of "Bruised Orange". The LP is in a plain white jacket with an autograph on the front, with an S with a line through it and then John Prine from Dan Socola. The record itself says test pressing from Specialty Records Corporation Olyphant PA. It also says Acct Elektra.
Artist John Prine. MTX NO. A, REC NO. 6E-139. The songs on side A are Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone, There She Goes, If You Don't Want My Love, That's The Way the World Goes 'Round, and Bruised Orange. Side B also starts with Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone, My Woman,Crooked Piece of Time, Iron Ore Betty, and The Hobo Song. Pretty well all the songs are the same as in "Bruised Orange", but mine does not include "Fish and Whistle" or "Aw Heck". So if you, John, or anyone else can tell me more about this record and can help me, feel free to contact me at my email address. I have sent pictures of the cover and record to Josh Preston at Oh Boy records. Haven't found out much yet, but looking forward to hearing from someone. Thank you, Butch

John,
My brother John has just died suddenly of cancer at only 51 years of age. He and his wife Cherryl have been huge fans of yours and introduced the rest of the family to your music many many years ago. They've traveled to see your concerts in many different cities, provinces and states, and your music will be part of the services this Friday and Saturday.
I think it would mean a lot to Cherryl to receive some sort of message from you at this time. Please email Cherryl VanDongen at skynrd_rocks@hotmail.com
Thank you.

Hey John,
Had the privilege, and I honestly do mean privilege, to see you in Whitewater this past weekend. It's difficult for me to find words that adequately describe the experience as they would likely fall short of their mark. Back in my younger days a bunch of us would travel to northern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan to ski. On these trips we would listen and (attempt) to sing along to your music on the 8-Track. Lost track of the music until a couple of years ago.
As a long-time fan of the TV show Northern Exposure I always wondered who performed the closing song on the very last episode. Turns out it was Iris DeMent Through her website and various links I rediscovered your music and have been a reborn fan ever since. Thank Iris for me.
What a pleasure your performance was. Honest, unpretentious, and cleanly performed music. The boys in the band were nothing short of fantastic, and Jason Wilbur, holy cow! And it's easy to understand why you've said that Iris is your favorite. I thank you for a great experience. This was my first concert and will not be my last. We'll see you again in Green Bay come March. Just ask for Beaker. Again, a most sincere thank you.
Tom K. New Lisbon, WI
Hi John,
Went to your concert in Whitewater last Saturday and was blown away! I've been a fan for years, but have never gotten to a concert before. Thanks to you and Iris and the boys for a great show! It was cold and nasty outside, but the music was hot in the auditorium! Keep playin' and writin'!
A fan for life,
Tom

I've been a fan of John Prine since the mid 70's and last saturday night I had the opportunity and privilege to attend his concert at Whitewater, Wi. He had a cold and/or sore throat and during his first song I didn't think the show would last very long. He put on a fabulous show for two hours and 20 minutes, then came back twice because the packed house kept standing and applauding. There was blowing snow, icy roads and a strong wind but everyone drove slow and no one left early. It was absolutely great to see him. THANKS jOHN!!!!!!!!! I still have his old beat up guitar case and will leave it in my will to whichever of my children likes him and his music the most. He is and will remain my very favorite artist.

mr. prine, i cant understand how i went through 20 years of my life without listening to you. an older friend of mine turned me on to your music 4 years ago and since then i have been addicted. your guitar riffs are like crack cocaine and the tone of your voice is one of a kind. i cant seem to get through one day without listening to you. for so many years when someone would ask me who my favorite singer or musician is i would throw out a name like hank, willie,or waylon. now i always say john prine and people give me a bewildered look. anyway, i love the references you make to big ears, like in "sam stone" and Please don't bury me". my ears look like 2 vws trying to pass each other when i walk. please bring your magic to northern virginia or d.c. sometime. i am a devoted fan for life and i love trying to play your songs for my two daughters. thanks for all that you give. damion '

I am taking my husband to your concert in Whitewater Wi on Feb 9. He has been a fan for many years, and we listen to your CD's when we go to bed. This is a special treat for him for our 35th wedding anniversary, and I wonder if you could sing "Can I go all the way with you" for my John.
Thank you,

Being a korean war vet his life has been troubled and your music brought him great joy. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've been a Prine fan since about 1980. A good friend of mine played some good guitar and we would sing some Prine tunes when our smiles were just right. The first one I heard and learned was 'Please Don't Bury Me" ,still a favorite.
I've recently been doing some karaoke with friends and ''Ain't hurtin nobody" has made me an almost star in OKC!! Many people ask me where I find all those 'great songs'
I was at a meeting in Greenville, Ms and found a Karaoke bar and did several Prine tunes and got a standing ovation when I left? (they said I did good, (not just glad cause I was leaving!)
I wish John would come back to OKC or Tulsa. I've done my best to help build a new fan base for him here!
PS. John
Hope to shake your hand in Memphis.
I have a pair of tickets to see you there. And a sweet lady who loves you to go with me.
I once had a person tell me I sounded just like you when I sang one of your songs. I wasn't sure how to take that? I thought I sounded even better???

Check out this cool new song written about John...obviously titled, "John Prine". You can find it on Digstation.com under 'Americana' music - the CD is titled "Riverstones" by Charlie Zulu Project!

John,
We love playing around on karaoke at home and we love your song "In Spite of Ourselves" but cannot find it in karaoke. Can you tell me if it is or if it will ever be made into karaoke? Thank you very much for time to read my email. Janet

John,
Someone gave me your "Live" album a long time ago. (How old am I ?? CD-excuse me!) Every time I take a long day drive, a long road trip, or go camping I MUST play this album or things just ain't right. Angels/Montgomery is my absolute favorite, brings tears every time. Saw ya twice; great shows, very personable, very sincere, very professional yet not "slick", just down to earth. I have lots of folks from Texas and one of your songs talks about how the men always end up sitting in the garage in lawn chairs, drinking beer and talking--- that's my family too!! Love Ya Honey, keep up the great music and lyrics, God Bless.
Rollie, Durham, NC HOPE. That's my JP story. I am and fear will always be a struggling musician, a poser, a wanna be. God blessed me with a love to listen and play but sadly not so much for the talent. At times I get a bit low on my shortcoming abilities and it's then I always turn to without question one of my very favorites artists - John Prine. His/your music is not only fun to sing & play but manageable for someone like me. Yup, hope, that's what I get in big platefuls, hope that one day I will be a better musician.
Thanks John for your gift.
Joe in Tampa, Florida A fan for 33 years, I continue to rate any Prine concert as one of my top events. Thanks for touring. Please consider returning to the Tampa Bay area.

Not to sound flippant, but I think nowadays most backstage passes are all used up on personal friends and relatives and other musical stars, but I met him by hanging around after they all got done with him. Everybody wants to meet him and shake his hand :) Read the message board, they discussed it there before
Robert -Vegas How do you get backstage passes to meet and greet John Prine?
Thanks
Bob Loge John,
Keep up the good work! A little story. The first time I saw you was in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1974 I believe. I had never heard of you but a buddy of mine got the tickets and I went. The next day I went to the Electric Fetus Record Store and bought all the albums you had made. WOW!!! What an impression you made. For years as my wife and I raised our four children I would randomly bring out the albums and play them. Then in 2006 you came to Minneapolis to the Orpheum Theatre and my wife and I went to see you. She wasn't too sure about going. Again, WOW!!! She was very impressed. We went out the next day and bought 2 or 3 of your latest cd's and now play you all the time. In October 2007, my wife and I went to San Francisco with our second daughter and her boyfriend. We saw you at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Again, WOW!!! My daughter and her boyfriend were hooked! Now on February 9, we are going to be seeing you at Whitewater, Wisconsin. We are bringing our four children and their spouses and/or boyfriend/girlfriend. They have heard all the cd's and can't wait for the concert. You will hear us from the cheap seats in the balcony. You've spanned the generation and we love it!!!
A huge fan,
Jammin' Judi K
Hello Friend,
We used to visit every year at the Everly Brothers Homecoming in Central City, Kentucky. I used to have a bluegrass and folk radio show in Clarksville, TN and always covered the homecoming for my show. The first year you and I met I had sprained my ankle backstage and you helped me to the back of the pick up truck to rest. We drank a few and visited. After that we ran into each other every year for a few there. I sure miss those times. I live in Western NY now and would love to see you sing again. Please please please book a show in my area soon. Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls are all close John. Hey I would drive to Pittsburgh or Cleveland in good weather. Would love to see ya again. Your music will live forever and these New Yorkers sure do need a dose of it. Hugs my friend...............

Hey Mr Nashville, I just bought myself a present. no, not stock in standard oil...standard songs for average people. played it for mom this evening (she's eighty five) and she was singing along in a few minutes time. my dad would have loved this album. he was an eddie arnold fan. i grew up on roger miller and little jimmy dickens. then i heard paperback writer and flipped the record over...it's good to hear REAL country again. john-KEEP WRITING! you are one of my favorite songwriters.
Smokey Witt - Ontario, Canada
Hi John, thanks for the add. I saw your gig at Massey Hall in Toronto in the early '70's when your encore was all Hank Williams songs. Keep up the good work.
Sweet & Twisted in CA
i just discovered your music today, and me and my lovely lady listened to "In Spite of Ourselves" looked at each other, and made the greatest love making you can make! you inspired one hell of a night! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Jake Viano - Chicago
Hey John,
u don't know me but my mother knows you. Years ago (70's) you used to play a gig in Chicago at some local bar(can't remember the name) every weekend and the whole place would sing along to "Dear Abby", afterwards you would go and sit at the bar, drink and chat it up w/ the bar tender named Becky (Lots of curly blonde hair). Well anyways, that's my mother and she introduced me to your music at a young age thus producing another loyal fan. You probably won't remember but I thought I'd at least see.
On another note, are you coming to Colorado any time soon? I'd love to see another show!!
Randall - Nashville
hey john,
i used to wait on you and your family/friends at G.H. Grill and I no longer work there. I just want to send you a message and tell you how much I enjoy your music and I miss seeing you once or twice a week.
Your music is warm and inspiring. I don't know if you remember me or not. I waited on you at the new location. I am an older guy (51), short hair and glasses. Hope to maybe run into you around town.
Good luck touring.

Larry & Leigh Keller - Melbourne, FL
My wife and I always went to your concerts at the Florida Theater in Jax, when we lived on Amelia Island.
My wife, Leigh, always gave you a bouquet of flowers during your performance.
We have moved to Melbourne, FL so we do not get to Jax very often.
Thanks for the music!
jude...BFE, Indiana
I was exposed to your music as a young child growing up in the Chicago area. My brother played your tunes a lot. One that has always stuck with me is Muhlenberg County, the other I'm not sure of the title, but it's about having and raising a family feeding them all peaches and finding Jesus. I would just like to say 'thank you' your songs were played many a weekend as my family gathered with the guitars and banjos. I have many fond memories and your music is a big part of it.
michael pa.
i use sam stone as my email. been a huge fan since 1972. was living in milwaukee. late nights i would listen to folk music on radio and heard hello in there.had to here more. it didn't take long before i heard sam stone and wondered how he knew my life story to that point? needless to say i became a "prine head".while others followed dylan or garcia i followed prine. thank you for turning my life around. your music has always been a lift to me. inspiring and leading me forward. i've always anticipated your next album or cd or what ever other methods i could use. along the way i also picked up one other artist that inspired me almost as much, mickey newberry, i'm sure your cut from the same cloth? hey i'll write again in the future sure was glad to share my thoughts.
Dan Jones -- Columbus, OH
Hey, John -- We are looking forward to seeing you again in Columbus in February. Thought I would be the first in line for tickets but was surprised and then again maybe not so surprised to see my mailman in line before me. I'd love to see you and Dylan on stage sometime together -- maybe he's game for that.
Sylvia Lieb
HI John! Wanted to let you know how much I value your writing and your music.
My son gave us Prine concert tickets this year for Christmas - The Taft theater in Cincinnati for February 22. I found out last week that I have a meningioma ( a benign, slow growing brain tumor) that is why I have been having hearing loss on my right side for the last year.
My point is , though, that I am scheduling my surgery for the week after your show so I won't miss it! We love you and rank you high among our life's treasures. Thanks for your gift.
Love,
Sylvia

I'm a former Marine and I just wanna say thanks for your songs especially paradise getting me through the tough times. I grew up listening to your songs with my Uncle and Father. Any time I was down or homesick your songs either made it worse or lifted me up depending on the amount of alcohol involved. Anyway Thank you.

Nope, never saw you in concert. Nope, never traveled for hours to do that. Nope, never waited backstage to get your autograph. Yup, listened to you as a younger man myself. Yup, laughed till I peed listening to Dear Abby. Yup, ached with the old woman, and the old man in your songs about forgotten people and forgotten love. I'm now 53, have rediscovered your music (glad you, too, survived hehe), and my daughter thinks you're songs are cool. Only now, I've come to understand the Donalds and Lydias better than the Louise's, but have known and loved them both. Thanks, John. Come up to Maine. We'll treat you right, even if we are damned yankees.
Joseph Bernard- Savannah, GA
Dear John,
I filled out the come play in my town fan site as well, but don't know if it went through. Basically, I am a life-long fan of your music, your message and your outlook on life. I remember listening to Bruised Orange with my Mom at the age of four. From there, I graduated to Missing Years, which I bought for my parents as a teenager for Christmas (the family skipped church that morning and listened the whole album through). I have never been a huge fan of church, but earlier this year, we attended a Good Friday service at a local Savannah church. The minister played music throughout the service in place of a sermon, and when I heard Fish and Whistle, I knew I was in the right place. While I still have doubts about religion and God and that stuff, I instantly knew I would be okay with a preacher who shared my appreciation for you. Anyway, we would like to SOLICIT YOU (haha) to come play for our wedding reception. If you find any spare time around Oct 4th, or before, please let me know, I assure you you would be a most welcomed and appreciated guest.
Sincerely,
Joseph Bernard jber88@aol.com

hey my name is leroy - i was introduced to john prine at an early age, my father is 64 now and he often played it. he had the prime prine album, and i loved it. but that was all i had heard until 02 or maybe 03 at the nashville river stages, i lived in nashville for awhile and attended Middle TN State University. when we lived in nashville my father was the GM of the Nashville Palace until that 911 incident, and that cut tourism so much that they let him go. i went to this show and it was incredible, i heard songs i had never heard before that i like just as much as illegal smile or sweet revenge. like fish and whistle and paradise, my father had talked about paradise in the past but i had never heard it. i bought that shirt, in spite of ourselves with the man and woman chatting, in church i believe. i would like him to know that his music is "incredible". i am more into heavy metal music than anything, but i love john prine's mellow beat, and he speaks the truth. after i saw his show in nashville TN, i found out that a professor of mine knows john, his last name was Austin i think and he taught sociology. and my respect for him, for knowing john is the only reason i applied myself and passed his class because i had a bad start to that semester. here is a funny story, back when i was a wild young buck. me and a female friend of mine got arrested at a road block for a lil bit of pot in her purse. while they were booking us, we sang the entire last verse and chorus of illegal smile. the police told us to shut up but we just looked at one another and smiled. and sang louder till we were done with the well done hotdog bun, my sisters a nun! that girl had never heard of john prine before she met me, but the last time i saw her years ago, she was still talking about that incident and your music.
anyways it would mean the world with me for john prine to know that he and his music means something to me. i just saw tour dates, i will have to see you again if you come anywhere near the southeastern US. rock on
Nicole Belcher - Prince George, BC
I wanted to thank you for music. You provided the background to many days and nights of partying, road trips and relaxing. I grew up near LaCrosse, Wisconsin and I can't remember how young I was when I began singing along to your songs- maybe five or six years old. My parents were a big fan!!! After moving to British Columbia in 1989, I was happy to learn of your popularity there, too, and, man-oh-man, did I ever recruit a lot of fans!!!
Thanks for continuing to sing and entertain the world! I wish I was home and could come in see you in Whitewater!!!
Joel Wasankari - Clallam Bay, Washington
Hi John....
I'd like to think that you get these messages but I know you're a busy guy.
Anyway...
Maybe I was under a rock which is entirely possible but I didn't discover your music until 1998 when I was 38. A little late but right on time in my life as I needed it (your songs) about then.
I was going through changes such as the ol' blues inspiring subjects such as divorce, loss of much but also regaining my life and such.
And subsequently meeting my soulmate all the while listening to and singing along with Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. Have bought it all since then of course.
Thanks for doing what you do.

I hope to have the opportunity to be in Mtn. View at Jack's sometime when you're there and pick with you again.
I see you're going to be at the Orpheum in March. I saw you there with Bonnie Raitt many years ago. It's a great theater, and the show was awesome.

THANK YOU for coming to New Hampshire in April. My friend Kathy (who I met at your concert last year in Canbridge) gave me the scoop about your Concord concert in April. Thank you! We have been waiting and waiting for you to come back to New England. We have missed you! See you soon,

Mary Ellen, and my sister, Susan - Tulsa
Dear John, Thank God you are coming close enough to Tulsa that my sister and I can drive there to see you. She is terrified of flying or we would have seen you sooner. Guess you aren't going to make the Tulsa scene any time soon. We will be there early, as I purchased tickets as soon as they were available for pre-sale. Will you be staying around after the show to visit with some fans? We are your BIGGEST fans in Tulsa - have been for more than 30 years. We are driving to Little Rock early Saturday, March 8th, and staying at the Double Tree...Guess you wouldn't be staying there...(in our dreams). We want to update our "warm fuzzies" we got the last time we got to hug you. It takes a lot to get us excited, except when it comes to you. NOW, we have something to look forward to. See you in a couple of months.......Lots of love to our #1 man (even though we are both married - our husbands know YOU are #1)
Jim Bushey
I would imagine you get these letters frequently but...................
After driving 3+ hours for the show in Troy, N.Y. It was without a doubt one of John's best shows, he started with a seemingly sore throat, but man oh man, when he came into it and played for a little more than 2 hours ... absolutely worth every minute of the drive......
He is simply a magician......
Doug Lago Lake Ariel PA
I don't really have a story per se, though the 1st time I saw Mr. Prine, in Albany, after a 3+ hour drive from CT I got real lucky. See, we got to the show way early and found a great parking spot- and as we were getting ready to wander around Albany another car parked right next to us (this was a ways away from the theater and all by our lonesomes) Turned out to be Prine fans from Mass. We made quick friends and here's where we got lucky. These guys had floor seats- good ones- and two friends who cancelled. We had upstairs balcony seats and they gladly traded our seats for their extras. We were in heaven. Then during the show, I was a bit excited and bellowed out "Fish and Whistle" a little TOO loud. They played Souvenirs however, but the following song was indeed Fish and Whistle. After the song was over John clearly looked in our direction and pointed, as if you say "There ya go" So I guess I do have a story. And a personal request. I was one of the Priners to buy the Fair and Square CD when it first came out. And now there's 4 new songs on the EP. I was hoping that there was a way to download them (or at least Carousel of Love) you know, so's we don't have to buy the whole CD all over again for just the new songs. Anyway, thanks for everything.....

John!
I was just flipping through the new issue of The New Yorker, and saw the nice write-up on your upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall! Hope that all goes well Saturday!
Practice, practice, practice! Ha!
Last time I saw you was in '96 when you opened for Sting at The Pit in Albuquerque. If you should ever happen through southern New Mexico, let me know... Maybe we can get together and do a story on you. Happy New Year!
Cheers!

Back in 1974-75 while most of my college buddies were listening to "the dead" "Led zep" or dylan, somehow I got my hands on the "JOHN PRINE" album and over the next 30 years I must have bought that album/cassette/cd a dozen times after it was worn out ,stolen, or lost. (guess I was the guy supporting you all those years john). In that period of time I have gone to see more live shows than anyone I know but always seemed to find out John was in town after his shows. Last year as a member of WFUV here in NYC I pulled up the "John Prine" bio and found out John was doing a show for The Passium Society" on the campus of HARVARD Univ. Draging my much better half we took a road trip to see a guy who has bought me so much joy for over 30 years and it was worth every second. After the show John showed up at the post-show party and he and I got to talk and valerie took some great photo's of john and I talking(I even wrote john a thank you note on a napkin before leaving) that I will always cherish.
Saturday 1/5/08 I got to watch John play at Carneige Hall for 3 hours. He never left the stage "FOR 3 LONG HOURS!" forget about how great the music sounded, john is exactly 10 years older than me and I just keep thinking after awhile "man he must have to pee sometime some, i'm dying here......ha
Besides the great entertainer he is all you have to do is talk to him for a few minutes to realize he is truly one of the last GOOD GUYS left, I feel honored to have meet him .

john, thanks for a great show last night at carnegie hall. the band was superb as usual, and i was happy to see and hear iris dement(i was hoping she would play one or two of her songs with you backing her up,but hey, im not in charge).you really had it going on and my wife and i were completely blown away by the fact that you played for three hours straight. you made it look easy. so thanks again.i was wondering if youve ever given any thought to sharing your technique on some of your fingerpicked gems, and maybe some of your songwriting insights. the reason i ask this is because i know of a wonderful company called homespun tapes(run by happy traum and his wife). they do a great job with the amazingly talented artists who pass through their doors. anyway,i just thought id pass that along and hope for the best. thanks john

I have too many stories to tell in such a short space. In less than a year, I've made 15 posts about John Prine's music on my blog - "Necessary Therapy" http://pistolpete.wordpress.com I'd love for you to check it out. For all the Prine stories, go to "Unresolved Issues" and click on "John Prine".

"Just a Daydream"
Cars were boats and roads were rivers
We were all sailors and excellent swimmers
Eating fish for our lunch and dinner
Sometimes even breakfast too
I built me a boat with a great big sail
Changed my name to Ahab and hunted a whale
The Coast Guard came and threw me in jail
For fishing without a license
This is a daydream out of my head
It's nothing you could see or hear
Sometimes the best things in life ain't real
They're just behind your eyes and between your ears
While in jail I met a guy named Mark
His nose was pointed and his teeth were sharp
He looked like a cross between a human and shark
And man it really wierded me out
I asked Mark if he had a tough jaw
Then we used his teeth just like a hacksaw
Cut them bars and escaped the law
And sailed away to freedom
This is a daydream out of my head
It's nothing you could see or hear
Sometimes the best things in life ain't real
They're just behind your eyes and between your ears
Just before this daydream ends
Me and sharkman became best friends
We settled down on a tiny island
Down in the Aegean Sea
We met local women who became our wives
Lived on sushi and wild rice
We both got lazy and enjoyed our lives
And were happy as can be
This was a daydream out of my head
It's nothing you could see or hear
Sometimes the best things in life ain't real
They're just behind your eyes and between your ears

I have loved John Prine's music since the 70'. Saw him in Ontario a few times and last time in Edmonton in the mid 90's. Any plans to play in Canada again?

I was introduced to your music eight or ten years ago. My wife cannot believe how much I listen to it! Thanks man you are wonderful. I am not into autographs but what I wouldn't give to meet Jason and Dave. Oh you too. For Christmas my honey got tickets to the Benedum Performance. Great show an I am never going to let that woman go.
