Current Letters/Stories: DECEMBER 2008

Jerry- near Buffalo
Aint seen John since 84 or 85 at the Paramount in Seattle with Leon Redbone. Sure wish youd come near Buffalo. Been replacing your old albums with cds, your music is still as strong as when it first came out, an island of clarity in this troubled world we live in.

Matt Pace, Lehi Utah
The first Prine song I ever heard was your flag decal won't get you into heavan anymore about seven years ago. I found his first album at a thrift store on vinyl and ever since then I have bought six albums on iTunes and I'm not done yet. I missed John in concert here in Utah in 2006 while I was overseas but I am hoping that he will come back soon. What a great song writer and singer, I don't go a day without kicking back and putting on some good ol' Prine.

Lynne Scotland
Hey John hope you had a great Christmas and a 'Guid' New Year to you when it comes We're missing you badly over here in the UK - any idea when you'll next be visting these not-so-sunny shores? Soon, we hope It doesn't need to be Glasgow or Edinburgh - we've travelled before to Ireland and Liverpool to hear you (met you both places and even had a song - Brusied Orange - dedicated to us in Liverpool) All best wishes for 2009 Lynne and Jim

I first saw John Prine in concert in 1984 at a small venue called the Brandywine Club near Chads Ford in Pa. Place had a couple of bars and held around 750 people tops. Juice Newton opened for him and was booed off the stage. Prine came on, not really knowing what type of reception he would get. Started his first song, the crown went wild, he flash a huge grin, and went on to bring the house down over the next couple of hours. Great concert in a great setting.

Patrick McCord - Tulsa Oklahoma
I saw your show, here in Tulsa, on Saturday the 13th of Dec. and I was bowled over! What a great show you put on! I really didn't have any business paying almost $50 to go and see a concert but I love your music and life is short so I said to hell with common sense (not the album you did! ha!) and just went. I'm glad I did and I'd do it again in a flash! Thanks John for sharing your wonderful gift of music and words!

Wayne - Wolfforth, TX
I have listened to your music since I was a teenager. Some of your songs have been stuck in my mind for 35 years( grandpa was a carpenter, oh lidia}. Thank you for the music. Some of those songs truly gave me something to think about...

Laurie Jean Brown
Mr. John Prine, My Daddy, James "Lil James" Brown was a grand fan of yours. He in fact enjoyed many of your songs as alot of your CDs were in his collection. My Daddy played with a band out of Durham, NC called the JB Law Band and he was pals with Phil Lee. My Daddy and the band would always play my Daddy's favorite song "Same Thing Happened To Me". I see you will be playing in Durham in April and I look forward to going to your show in my Daddy's place (I know without a doubt that he would and will be there!) I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Merry Christmas to you Mr. Prine.. Thank you so much, Laurie Jean Brown

Diane - Marshall, VA
Merry Christmas! Thanks for keeping me entertained for 35 years (egads we're old). Enjoyed seeing you last time in DC. If you ever do a small, small venue concert, I am there.

Brian Canada
Hey When are you coming back to New Brunswick

Jim Harper - janoharper@bellsouth.net
Hey John, First of all, please visit Auburn, Alabama? Especially since we ain't gonna have much football fun for awhile:-( You might be our only hope to restore some sanity to this burg. As for 'my story' it goes on and on and might start your ears burning. One segment is what I call the 'spider morning blues'. I can't share it on a public forum but if that sounds celestially mystical to you I'd be happy to share it with you if you contact me. No, it isn't a song I'm trying to sell but it could give your great weirdness an idea for a song. I'm a 72 yr old Nam Vet so I just try to have some fun when I can. Again, please come to Auburn, we'd love to have you! Jim Harper

Curtis Warren Holden Missouri
Heard you for the first time in 2000 on National Public Radio on the way home from work. They played two songs, Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian, and Sam Stone. Started buying you CD's and now have them all. Have been to your concerts in Kansas City, Witchita, and Memphis. Looking forward to seeing you in Springfield Mo in Feb of '09. I had always wanted to learn guitar and after hearing your songs I took the plunge and now have 4 of them. One of them belonged to my Mother-in-law, it is a 1948 Gibson L-50. Thank you for giving me the gumption to learn to play (still not a very good player but I'm having fun). Thank you Mr. Prine!

Mookieman-Oklahoma
I just wanted to say Thank You for the show at Midwest City, OK on 12-12-08. It was great, better than I expected. My favorite was " I Ain't Hurtin Nobody" and "Soveniors". "Bear Creek " was good also. Hell, all the songs were good, what am I saying. The Hawaii song was my first time hearing it, that one is hilarious. There are some songs that are very funny, but I catch myself thinking of the lyrics and I realize there is alot of truth to your work. Sometimes, I cry when listening, then one minute later, I'm chuckling. That is rare in a songwriter. Iris was very good too, esp. when she sang duets with you. Perfect! I do not want to sound gushy, like I'm your #1 fan and all, but John you are an American treasure-storyteller, songwriter, funny, talented. I love your music and style. Thank you for making my life a little easier, I can put on one of your CDs and immediately feel better. That is what your music means to me! Thank you!!! Please return to Oklahoma as soon as you are able. Bless you and yours. Have a Happy Holidays. Peace. Mark P. S. I am going to rent that Billy Bob movie "Us and Them" (I think it's called) A brother-in-law with low self esteem! Good stuff -"In Spite of Ourselves".

I bought my 1st album (Prime Prine) on a spur of the moment thing & loved it! I've been a fan ever since. Saw you at Hanging Rock, Aust. Gawd, but it was cold that night. Thanks, Cliff.

Before i was a thought in my parents mind you wrote the songs that stuck in their heads. Saturday mornings my folks would usually fix a big breakfast and we would rock out to your hits. Pancackes and the lost dogs album is still my favorite way to start the weekend at 25. I am so thankful my parents loved music especially yours. My dad took my sister and i to see you in Eugene Oregon when i was about 11. Even that young i could see how your music touched the lives of so many. For You my friend for bringing the fam closer together i will start all my weekend with pancakes and tapping my toe to some of the greatest songs ever written. Will you please come back west, I want to return the favor and take my folks to see you this time. - Kacy

"Sam Stone" was the first song of John's that I ever heard. It must have been somewhere around 1973 or so as I was being re-assigned from Malmstrom AFB in Montana to Vandenberg AFB in California. I knew instantly that I liked the music and wanted more. Kinda funny though... I've been a sworn steely eyed military killer since 1969 - but John's music stilled the beast in me for a while. The high point of my Prine experience was when he was doing a show one afternoon at UC Santa Barbara. I was in the Air Force Command Post at 1STrad (Vandenberg) and picked it up on Public Service Radio. When John opened the phones up, I called him and got through. We talked about the inconsistencies of his music and my life and then we said good bye. Damn! I brought his music back to South Carolina and turned a lot of folks on to it. My son and nephews still trade John Prine lyrics in emails. I went in the Army National Guard after Vandenberg and added a number of songs to our pickin and grinnin sessions over many beers. The other soldiers never realized that most of the songs were war protests. Good job John. I wish you the best. Skybird

Tonight I listened to John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves" for the first time since my aunt passed away this summer. My aunt and uncle used to sing this song together in the garage and livingroom with friends who'd played folk music, bluegrass and whatever else they could get to swing on the mandolin and guitar duet they played. Several Prine originals are in now four generations of family music memories. My aunt had a fantastic sense of humor and we miss her so. Thank you, John, for a lifetime of songwriting that's made it into our own family jam sessions as a form of entertainment on so many levels.

Lindsey Stock
I grew up listening to John Prine. My parents have been fans of his since before I was born (1981) seing a few concerts of his in the 70's. I have continued to enjoy his story telling and voice for all of my 27 years. In 2004, when my husband and I were married, we had the DJ play "Inspite of Ourselves" for us at our reception. Embarassingly enough, we related to the song almost to a "T"! At any rate, when my best friend saw the tickets for sale in September for John Prine and Iris Dement in OKC he bought them for me as a birthday present. I live in Longview, TX so on Friday my parents and I woke up early and hit the road. This concert was, by far, the best show I have ever been to. My parents, who have seen him in concert over the last three decades, said that this was the best show that they had seen him perform! In addition to being blown away by Prine's enthusiasm, story telling, voice and talent on guitar I have to say that Jason Wilbur was fascinating. I want to thank you, Mr. Prine, for the experience of my life. I hope to see you again soon (maybe in tx). Lindsey

Liz in Norman, OK
My story is simple. I've been a fan of John Prine for so many years I couldn't add them up! Thank you, John, for coming to Oklahoma in Dec. of '08. I really never thought you would make it here. From the turn out at the concert at Rose State College you have a lot of fans in this neck of the woods. If you came here every month I figure you'd still fill up the venue with adoring fans like me. Your three chords, fine voice, heart and the way you can tickle a word so that it comes out just right are a gift to us all. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Liz

Marie/Davy N.Ireland
I am writing this on behalf of my partner Davy who is a great fan and been to several concerts here. He wasn't such a great fan till he heard "Lake Marie" soon after he and his late wife Agnes(she passed away in 2005) had twin girls in 1968 who only lived for a short time having been born prematurely. They had them christened and called them Marie and Elizabeth, one was dark haired the other fair, just like the song. They went on to have 2 more girls whose middle names are Marie and Elizabeth. Imet Davy on the internet in 2007 my own husband passed away in 2005,and it freaked him out when I told him my name was Marie. Ihad never heard the name John Prine, but have grown to love the music and the voice.Have been to 1 concert in Londonderry and can't wait to get to another one.Would love an autograph for Davy as he J.P.crazy. Hope you are back over this way soon in the v.near future. Marie/Davy xx

Paul Ayotte-Claremore, Oklahoma
Dear Mr. Prine, My name is Paul Ayotte and my dear wife Ronee and I live in Claremore Oklahoma. We will be in attendance at your concert in Tulsa this Saturday night 13DEC08. Many years ago I turned my wife on to your music, and consequently one of your songs is "our song". The song is the duet you did with Bonnie Raitt on the album "The Missing Years" titled "Unlonely". Your concert is an early 14 year anniversary present for us, (29DEC94) and we got to wondering if there was some way that you and Iris Dement or even you alone could sing this song during your concert? Kinda silly to request such a thing, but we thought it was a bit of a hoot and Ronee would be tickled if it could be done. 15 years ago when I had to stop drinking, I bought Iris' first album and even wrote her a letter. It was the first letter I had ever written to a famous person since I'm not much on glad-handing and such with famous folks, and Iris wrote me a very nice letter in return.....she is a nice lady and boy howdy do I like to hear her sing!!! I came across the news for your Tulsa concert almost by accident last month and when I heard that Iris was going to be singing too then I knew I had to just buy the tickets and go. It was quite a grand surprise for the Wifee too!!! She is very excited and we are counting down the hours until Saturday...... Just thought we would give you a holler and see what becomes of it. We'll see you at your show!!! God bless you and merry Christmas!!! Sincerely Paul A. Ayotte Claremore, Oklahoma

Hi Neighbour! Hi John. We've never really met, but I see you around Kinvara from time to time.. If you get time to listen to a song or two on my page I'd love to hear what a top class songwriter thinks of them! I've entered the wedding song to the International Song Contest in Nashville. Hopefully it's the kind of thing they're looking for.. Cheers, P. http://www.myspace.com/petelamb2000

Jameson - Cottonwood, AZ
Please come to Northern Arizona. I live in Cottonwood but you may be more familiar with Sedona, Jerome or even FlagStaff It is a wonderful and beautiful place to visit which I am sure you are aware. and your show would be so much appriciated. Last time I saw you I had to travel to Grand Junction CO which is 500 miles away. I dont have that option any more and would love to see you close to home! Thank you for your time, Jameson

Mike Moir....Fredericton N.B. Canada
I wouldn,t know who John Prine was if it wasn,t for my younger brother Vernon. Any evening that he has friends in you can be sure that he,ll have John Prine playing a good part of the night. I always say "Who,s that goomer singing?", it always gets his goat. He,s turning 50 this summer and i wondered if it is possible to get a shirt autographed personally for him? He,s not a Nascar fan so it.s a lot harder to get something unique for him. Where do i send the money if this is possible?

Bruce Sparks NV
Saw you in Greensborough NC a few years back. Your music makes me smile and puts me in a good mood when things aren't going so well. Especially liked your CD with Mac Weisman. Let my mom and dad listen to it. They remember some of those old greats. Keep up the good work. Any chance you'll come back to Reno sometime? Sure like to see you again. sparksdog@sbcglobal.net

Reno Hermus, Little Chute, Wi.

Would love to see you again, I saw you 3 times already and loved every show. I wil keep my ears open and if you don't make it to this area I guess I will see you in Milwaukee om March 6th. Thanx for all of your awesome tunes. Reno Hermus

Brandi Clarksville tn
Well, Mr. Prine, my brother introduced me to your music and he used to be an alcoholic drug addict so I really value his taste in music. I just wanted to share a song I wrote with you. This song was written circa '92/'93. Ahem: Ode to Copper Ceeeee is for the good conductivity you gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave me Oooooo is for the other things you gaaaaaaaaaave me Peeeeeeeeee is for the pots and pans you gaaaaaaaave me Peeeeeeeeee is for the plenty of pennies you gaaaaave me Eeeeeee is for the electrical wiring you gaaaaaaaaave me R is for the rivets on my Levis that you gaaaaaave me Copper is shiny and it is very malleable Copper is very ductile which means it can be stretched into long thin wiiiiiires Copper is found deep in the earth's crust and has been mined for over 1,000 years Copper was first discovered by the ancient Ma-a-a-yans Copper is our friend and we should conserve it. The End Well, whata you think?? Do I have a future in songwriting?? I think there may be a real niche for songs about elements you know ala' school house rock. Your NEWEST fan, brandi aka Copper girl

Linda Mellott from Niles, Michigan
Well.......you see, about 6 years ago I met a guy who was and still plays guitar on a picnic table down at our local park. He could play all kinds of music, but favored playing your, yes you, John Prine, songs! He came out of a place called Rainbow Farm, a hippie place out of Vandalia Michigan. I was told that he was a very good imitation of you and even made your songs come alive. It is true, my husband Joe Mellott, a guy who is known by just Guitar Joe, can play your songs so well that he gets complimented for doing so by people who he meets at the various places he plays them at, he especially gets big ovations for Daddy's Lil Pumpkin. I wanted you to here this straight from someone who is so very proud of what Joe can do, I am extremely happy that he enjoys your music so much John. Maybe someday the two of you should meet and sit and talk awhile. I know that you are a big influence in his music and consider yourself welcomed at our home anytime that you want to come over. You can reach us by e-mail at aero_harley@yahoo.com or rainbowguitarjoe@yahoo.com or you might even write us at the following address 652 North 7th Street, Niles, MIchigan 49120 or maybe you might try calling Joe, I know how much it would mean to him to hear from you seeing that you are one of his greatest musical heros, at 1-269-684-3310. You have been a rock to my husband through some very tough times in his life and have made those times bearable. I just wanted to convey these thoughts to you and to let yu know how much you are appreciated and loved by my husband. Thank-you for being just ywho you are!

Mr. Prine In 1971 my cousin, who I grew up playing guitar and singing with, called me and said, "You got to hear this guy, John Prine. He reminds me of you." I pronounce some of my words like you when I sing. Anyway, you have been an inspiration to me for all these years. After I heard your debut album I was hooked. I love nothing more than to sit with my guitar and play your songs. In 1982 I joined a blue grass band just to play music with somebody. At the first rehearsal I was asked, "well, what do you know how to play". Having never played blue grass music before I proceeded to play "Paradise". The band looked at me like, What?, and then joined in. It sounded pretty good. They asked me who that song was by and I told them John Prine. After that I played some more of your works and they fell in love with your music. We played a lot of your stuff at various blue grass gigs and even made a recording of ourselves and some of your songs (not for sale). I still listen to that CD of our band, Motherload, and I think it sounds great. I finally got to see you live 2 years ago in Florida. The whole show, I was wishing I could be up onstage with you having a good old time. That would be the greatest moment of my life. You are the best storyteller I have had the pleasure to listen to. I hope God keeps you well and doing what is obvious you love to do best, and that's playing music. Without your music, life would be a sorry mistake. Mark Romero

Russ - Pennsylvania
I'm nobody. Heard Fryin' Pan on the radio almost 40 years ago one night whilst I was getting baked with a few friends - then a while later (lost track of time) - somebody played Great Compromise for me and I was hooked. Saw you in 72 at the Walnut St Theatre in Phila and after that punctuated my life with your shows and albums - Tower Theater several times - last time in the 90's - you walked into the bar across the street with Reeda and the gang and passed by so close that if you'd have sneezed I would have had to wipe off - Forum in Harrisburg after your cancer bout, Phila Folk festival. In 2004 got my heart broke big time and you released Fair & Square just a few weeks later - Long Monday saved my life, sir. These days I'm 59 - these years just roll by like a broken-down dam - and no longer stuck like the tick of a clock..... with a new lady who after hearing "In Spite Of Ourselves" for the first time said to me "That sounds just like us." She and I will be in Wilmington Saturday night to let you punctuate my life once again - and hers for the first time. Somebody once asked me what the soundtrack of my life would sound like. LOL - that was easy. "John Prine"

It was 19 seventy something when I first heard your music sung by someone at the campus pub at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver BC. Been a fan ever since. Some time shortly after that I went to see you at the QE auditorium in Vancouver. We were having drinks in a local watering hole before the concert when I noticed this short guy beside us wearing a funny pair of colored running shoes hangin out having drinks too.. As the lights went down and the concert began I realized this short guy with the funny running shoes was you... Now over 30 years later, we're making a pilgrimage to come and see you.. this time in Knoxville, Tennessee, on the 20th of Feb. Never been to Tennessee, but can't wait to see you on the 20th. Who knows maybe we can have drinks together before the show...

Chuck Micallef Newcastle-under-Lyme U.K.
Hello John, Just wondering if you, Jason and Dave are going to be in the U.K. in May 2009. You can email me info@ChuckMicallef.com Warmest Regards from over the Big Pond Chuck

Linda Thornton
John, the best news in the world today, my husband woke me up saying you had agreed to do a concert in Knoxville, Tennessee again, I had emailed you just a couple of weeks ago begging you to come and christen our new theatre with your voice - this is the best Christmas present ever - even though you don't play until February. John, once again there is no one else in the entire world that can compare to you - your voice and most of all the songs you write and share with all of us - God bless you John and I hope your Christmas will be as great as mine (your concert tickets are my husband's and my Christmas present to each other) and we will be right there in front consuming every moment of your show. John, be blessed and be healthy with GOD SPEED. Your favorite Tennessee Fans.

Mary Brelsford - "Okie Sis"- Bixby, OK
John - Paducah was great...we were not first row as we hoped, but 3rd row, dead center wasn't bad at all. When somebody yelled, "I want to sing one", that was me. And my sister Susan, she wants Jason to be her son...I know you heard that. We will see you here in Tulsa in just two weeks - if you could somehow through out something, like, oh, I don't know, 'love those Okie Sisters" or something so we know, that would be so great...greater than sliced bread! Oh, and tell the guy picking up the picks on stage, he could spare one or to for my sister and me...in Paducah, he gave some young guy one, then was an ass to me when I begged and pleaded for one...I would frame it with a copy of the picture of you, my sister and me which I carry in my wallet at all times. You make life bearable, and the past few years have been so hard, I couldn't have made it without you! You truly are my everything... P.S.John....I'm sorry I forgot to mention your brother on stage with you...it took me back ...shed a tear or two. Hope you like your new address, if you've been able to go home yet see you soon - see you soon. LUVUBY - Mary

Thank you for my autographed photo! My husband, Paul, got it for my birthday through a work friend of his. (He's an attorney at Bone, McAllester & Norton, and a mighty fine trademark attorney if I do say so myself.) I got 3 pairs of my favorite Lucky jeans, a dinner out with the family at Stoney River and an autographed picture of you! My 44th birthday pretty much rocked. I first heard your music in high school -- I grew up in Sewanee, TN amongst the (over) educated and literate hippies up there but all their preaching was totally lost on me until I was able to peek out from under the hormone haze of being a dumb-ass teen. "Dear Abby" cracked me up when I first heard it, but I flitted off to other stuff and didn't dig any deeper. Until a few years ago, I heard a review of "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" on npr, got the cd and was hooked. I bought up a bunch of your cd's -- although some ding-dongs went on a petty theft spree in our neighborhood over the summer and stole my cd case out of the van -- and seen you perform twice (once in Northern Virginia, and once at the Ryman). I love the humorous way you have with a phrase and the emotion that comes through with those simple words. All with your tongue planted firmly in your cheek and sometimes poking your finger in their eye ;). I think I might be the only Mom around whose kids know all the words to "Spanish Pipedream" -- they just love that song. Cracks them up every time. I just today discovered "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore" and posted it to my facebook page, even. Substitute "your support our troops yellow ribbon magnet" and you could've written that song yesterday. Alright, that's enough. I just wanted to thank you for the pic and thank you for your music. And ask you to come back to the Ryman sometime. Thanks, Holly Kruse

Hello In There, My son just took me t Florida theatre t hear you last night. What a fabulous venu and what a fabulous show. I actually shed some tears on the third song as my life passed before my eyes. My so now 32 grew up forced fed on your music and I must say he can parrot your sound almost perfect. I own a home on Lake Malone adjacent to the Shady Cliff Motel and I have sat on my back porch and listened to you play by the pool. I was first introduced to your music in 1971 while in the USN. A friend knew I listened a lot to Dylan and Kristofferson and said you have to hear this guy. I suspect I have purchased 90% of your records and was easily among your first 100,000 fans, not bad I suppose. I' d like to sell you that house on Lake Malone. Give me a call or just come by and see me in St. Augustine.:)

I have wanted to hear you in person for decades and have a front row ticket for tonight's show in Jacksonville, Fl. But as a single Dad raising 2 kids by myself with no help, I have to care for a sick daughter who is getting better, but not fully recovered. Would it be possible to switch to another show sometime ? Maybe we could talk you into doing a show in Gainesville to benefit the non profit I am in charge of and at least I could hear you in person. Since it seems you live in Florida , our work helps protect the environment you must have come to appreciate. We could take you out to a coupe great farms and feed you wonderfully, or show you North Florida natural treasures Sincerely, Marty Executive Director Florida Organic Growers and Consumers, ( FOG) www.foginfo.org fog@foginfo.org

John, my life has centered around listening to your music, all the good and all the bad. If I've ever had a bad day, all I need to do is play your music, if I am having a good day all I need to do is play your music. I would never date anyone who did not know of John Prine - if they didn't know who you were they surely weren't cool. I have attended many of your concerts and I always felt bad that Knoxville, Tennessee had such a run-down place called the Tennessee Theatre for you to perform - but, John you must come back to Knoxville - the theatre has been totally restored and it's just sitting waiting on you to christen it with your voice. My husband and I truly love you and what you have done to enhance our lives with your music. Thanks again John, we love you and I hope to see you soon in Knoxville.

Shay
Just wanted you to know the Bloomington Show was great, would love to meet you. My husband has been a long time fan of yours. He sings and plays as well. I hope you don't mind that he does a couple of your songs. We will be in Missouri in Feb. to catch a show of yours. Maybe we could meet you then. If not we will surely enjoy the show. Love and Peace Shaya

Mr Prine Thank you first of all for another fine performance there at the Palace in Louisville. We ended up in the third row center stage and it was great. Secondly, thank you so much for playing "In Spite of Ourselves". We love that song and we enjoyed hearing it live even more. I'm sure we'll be around to see you somewhere or another next year as well. I haven't missed a tour in six years. Take care

Hi John, My husband is a #1 of yours. Five out of seven nights we are listening to your cd's or dvd's. Over the past years we have attended quite a few concerts in Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL. My husband turned our next door neighbor on to your music. He became a big fan also. He is an elderly gentlemen with many medical problems. He has a pace maker and a defibrillator. He recently was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Things are looking grim for him. In an effort to cheer him up, my husband decided to grant one of his much talked about wishes: A CONCERT WITH JOHN PRINE. They will be going to your concert in Savannah on Friday, November 21, 2008. This trip has been talked about constantly since the beginning plans. He keeps talking about how he would like to meet you and get your autograph. However, my husband is concerned that he will not be able to stand in line and wait due to his heart condition. My plea to you is-Is there anyway possible that he could come back stage either before or after the concert for a quick introduction? This would be the highlite of his life. I'm sure that you get many requests like this and that you are unable to fulfill every wish. Please e-mail me (bgrant@tandroil.com) or call me at 912-449-8682 and let me know if it can be arranged. We would be forever in your debt if you could work this out for us. However, if you can't arrange this, just know that you have provided many, many, many, happy listening hours in our neighborhood. Belinda Grant, Blackshear, GA

Beverly Silva ~ Hotel Boulderado
The beautiful historic Hotel Boulderado is preparing to celebrate its 100 year anniversary this New Year's Eve and I am wondering if John Prine would like to attend as a VIP guest appearance at our NYE Gala Ball. After all, he wrote about the Boulderado in one of his songs! Beverly Silva (Director of Sales & Marketing) 303-440-2884 bsilva at boulderado.com

I ran across a note through google on you sit from a Jameylee who mentioned that she did a cover of your "Angel from Montgomery", inviting you to take a look-see at her web site. Did you? Is she fabulous -- or what? P.S. I live within 2 miles of the Maywood Post Office (talk about credentials).

Dam, John its really good to hear and see you again. Don't i know if you have any plans to play in Northern Calif in the upcoming 09. I sure would love to get the chance to pay my money and respect. My Dad is the one who got me to be a Prine fan didn't take much. I've seen you once only but hope to see you when you come though the northwest. I was in the Coach House years ago with my parents as it turned out we ended up on the live album. We all sounded good but as you said not to good as we where making a live record. My dad passed away some years ago when I play my Martin and sing some of your songs helps me remember the times when I used to play and sing them with him. The Martin I have was my dads that he had for years that he bought when we lived in CA. The person he bought it from said it was Owned Be John Prine at one time It's a D28 not know my dad was a Prine fan don't know why this person would of said this. Well this my long John Prine story. Hope to see you when come to the Spokane WA. Tim

I play your stuff all the time around our campfire. Everyone who wasn,t a fan is now. You are the greatest song writer bar none. a true legend. I play a 12 string 1972 epiphone, your music is her soul.

I posted my story yesterday, but I checked out your web site to find out if I could do something for your greatest fan -- my friend Catherine. Catherine has been in recovery for 13 years and has helped save the lives of many people in the Durham area who have struggled with addiction. She now has terminal cancer - and how she is dealing with that has been an inspiration. She has been a John Prince fan since you came out with music, and saw you in concert for the first time a few weeks after she began her recovery process. Your music is a part of who she is, and that is a good thing. I know that it would mean a great deal to her to have a signed note from you. I am surfing the web for as big a collection of your works as I can find to give to her....

Kathy New Jersey
Hi John, My husband and I saw you in concert at the Trenton War Memorial years ago. Can you come back to New Jersey more often, please?? (Our daughter's winter concert is December 5th, the evening you are in Montclair, as bad luck would have it!) You're wonderful!! Kathy

Kathy Pfeiffer
At family gatherings when I was a teen, my Uncle used to sing a song about a top-less waitress with nothing up her sleeve. In fact, I think that was the only song he could play on the guitar :) We all sang along. Took me years to figure out who had written that song and become a huge fan myself. I saw you in Greensboro as few years back. Please come back through NC!!

Of all the blogs I've read nobody has mentioned that the late, great John Denver recorded a number of Prine songs including Spanish Pipe Dream, Hello In There, and Angels From Montgomery. That's how I found out about this incredible song writer. Just had to go out and get some of his stuff and have been hooked ever since . Only regret is seeing him live only once at the Uptown Theater in KCMO. Most of the CD's in my truck have an 'OH BOY' label.....................Just thought I'd better add that I've been a Prine fan since 1971 or so- that makes me in my, well, um, 50's or so............ (jcsenne, check our cover songs page in the Music section, John Denver is listed)

Hey old buddy, Yeah I called you my buddy. Me and you have had some mighty good times together even if you don't know it.Your music has been there for me in some rough times and I've sung along when i was having good times. I am a Russelville boy and I have fished Rochester dam many times. I grew up in alot of the places you sing about. Anyways i don't know if you'll even read this but i wanted you to know how much I appreciate you and thank you for every song you sing I love them all.

Jason Gregoire - Nashville TN
Hi John, I'll be honest I didn't know who you were for quite some time until my grandfather played me your cd "Fair and Square". I loved it. I my favorite was the Blaze Foley tune called "Clay Pigeons. I learned it and played it for my grandfather and he got a real kick out of that. I wrote a song recently called "Katie Lee" and I hold it near and dear. It's been the most fun to write and record it for me. If you have the time I would greatly appreciate someone of your caliber to take a moment to listen to and let me know what you think. It's posted on my myspace page myspace.com/jasongregoire I really enjoy your music and when I played this for an artist I record he mentioned I should have you take a listen. I hope you get back in touch with me but if you don't then that's okay too considering you may be busy. Thanks for your time John. Respectfully, Jason Gregoire

Hey John, I will be seeing you in November in Louisville! I can't wait! It will be the 9th time I have seen you in concert! I'm bring a few friends along, and a couple of them would love to here "In Spite of Ourselves". I introduced them to your music and now they are fans. This is their first show. I have heard you sing the song by yourself, pointing out the girl part. It would be a great treat for them at their first show if you could sing it! I am counting the days! 17 days left! See you there!

I am so excited. I get to see you twice in one year!!! My son, daughter in law and I saw you in Cincinnati in Feb. I was so sad to see the disrespect given you by the crowd there, drinking, when asked not to etc. On Nov. 15 the above mentioned along with my daughter who is in her junior year at IU, her beau, who is new to you will see you at IU. I am sad however that we were not on the ball about your tour and date in Bloomington, therefore, we'll be in the balcony. I am happy that my daughter will get to see you this time and to bring a new fan to your show. Can't wait :o)

Karen Brown Columbus, Indiana
Had the privilege of seeing John perform for the third time this year at Evansville, Indiana. As always the show was awesome, from our intimate second row seats to meeting and taking a family photo with John after the concert at the hotel ,our family was on a natural high! John's seasoned expressive voice gets better and better with age. Great mix of tunes from all our favorites including the opening "Spanish Pipe Dream" and ending with 'Paradise". Thanks John for a great night. We look forward to seeing you in Louisville & Bloomington in a few weeks. God Bless! The Brown's

Susan Daniels-Tulsa, Okla
Your were awesome in Paducah and awesome in Little Rock. Thanks for all your hard work. It was great having your brother on stage with you. And as always Dave and Jason are the greatest!! Can't wait to see you in Tulsa in December. I noticed you've started your tour dates for next year. Don't forget us Okies!! Again, thanks for the John Prine fix again in Paducah and I'll love ya forever!!!!!!

Out of all the singers in John's genre (if we can even put it on the label) - he is absolutely AMAZING - i can relate to the sons, I hear his voice and it makes sense - and I hope he continues on for years - and he started my love for his music in Chicago, way too long ago that I want to admit - he played for free at the college I was going to (him and Steve Goodman) at Triton College - and he amazing me every time he put something out new - he is a great troubadour and I hope he keep moving me in a way that nobody else does - "I think I will take a walk after this"!!!! Keep it up, John - so are FANTASTIC, INCREDIBLE, ETC. and I hope to be at every show I can in the future = here in St. Louis and Chicago!!!! LOVE YOU

Alan Dillon - Lafayette, Indiana
I just saw John in concert for the first time on October 24th in Evansville, Indiana. It was everything I had hoped for and then some. He is incredible. All of the CD's I have do not do the man justice. He owned the crowd at this concert.

Hello Mr Prine, I've been a fan of yours for the past five years as it was my now husband who introduced your music to me. We started dating a little over 5 years ago and just recently got married. During the time we were dating, we've listened to every song you have on disc. We both have so many favorites but one in particular stands out. I always joked around with him saying that if we ever got married, I wanted to dance to "In Spite of Ourselves" And so at our reception, we did and everyone there loved it. We have tickets for your November 14th show in Louisville. This will make my 6th and I believe my husbands 10th Prine concert. As always, we are so looking forward to your show. Take care!

Mark -Venice,Fl
I heard my first Prine song Dear Abby when I was 10 years old. I had just got my first tape player and the only tape we had in the house was my mothers John Prine cassette that I found in her car. I listened to it everyday for God knows how long. I grew up and found other songs sang by him and fell in love with his music like never before. My mother cant believe that I like it as much as she does. I grew up in Illinois and moved to Florida and I heard John was coming to Clearwater to put on a show this year; I had to see it. I got the best tickets available, called my Mom and we got to see the best concert ever. I couldn't believe that I was watching him in person, I have been to a lot of shows but this one topped them all. My mother and me got to share this together and it meant so much.He sang all of my favorites and had so much class.Josh Ritter opened for him and he was great as well. Anybody that hasn't seen him yet needs to get tickets whenever they can, I waited 23 years to see him and it was well worth it. God Bless John Prine

for what you do John Prine. You may not realize it, but you are appreciated more than you know. For our family you gave my Father in law and myself a common ground in your music, which means the world to us. We all love your words and can't wait 'till you make it back to Missouri. Thank you!

Shad Marsh or the person who posted this message (below) please email me at nick@ohboy.com. thanks.

My husband has loved your music for years and being a daddy's girl our daughter has developed the same love. Which is why I am writing at this very moment Hannah our daughter who is 17 is having her third brain surgery in the past three weeks. she may be losing some of the use of her right side we will not know the outcome until after today's surgery. removing a section of her brain is the only option we had left in order to save her life. i thought you would laugh knowing that after the second surgery Hannah woke up singing your song angel from Montgomery. the team of surgeons laughed at her and have been teasing her about being such a big fan of yours. i think the reason was you were on her mind these past few weeks since you are coming to louisville ky on the 14 of nov. and we have been trying to figure out how to afford tickets since four weeks at Vanderbilt hospital in nashville has not been cheap. Is there any way you can help with guest tickets or at least send her a autographed photo. with warmest regards shad marsh

Lisa from Lindenhurst New York
It was in 1972 that I was listening to a new Bette Midler album (vinyl!) when she began to sing Hello In There. At the tender age of 12, that song touched me deep in my soul and I couldn't stop playing it over and over. I needed to hear more songs by whomever wrote this one. I found out that John Prine had many albums. I bought five of them the following week. Yeah, blew my entire savings ! It was pure bliss. It was incredible for a kid from Brooklyn New York whose favorite music at the time was Humble Pie, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and T.Rex. From Prine came Goodman. It was pure heaven for me. My parents were so confused as they were rock-n-roll fans. I attended my first show in 1977 and have been a solid fan ever since. I even had the pleasure of seeing Steve Goodman and John Prine together once. Thanks John Prine. Wishing you health and happiness. Really.....

Today is my seventeenth birthday, and for seventeen long years I have listened to your music. Tonight, we were driving home from my birthday dinner and "The sins of memphisto" came on the Ipod. After wailing all of the lyrics to the song, my family and I were pondering in wonderment what who when where or why or how exactly what "memphisto" means. FFL (fans for life) Love, The only Bradley's :)

P.S. Happy belated birthday!

John: First of all, THANK YOU so much for the music. Such a body of work. I last say you back to back, in 2007, I believe when you played two nights in Lexington, KY. My wife was with me during one of those shows. I just turned 40...her present: A Divorce. I'm going with a friend to see your November 14, 2008 show in Louisville, my birthday. For the first time, I'll be looking at, and listening to, some of those songs from a different perspective now. Guess it's all part of the healing process.

Happy Birthday John! You and I have a long history. I am originally from LaGrange Illinois. You kissed me once at a concert when I came up to the stage and handed you an orange. Yeah, it was your Bruised orange tour! I was around 18 then. More recently... I saw you in Belfast last October. You and Ireland were both amazing. A little over a year ago my husband and I saw you in Cary ,North Carolina. It was August and it was outside, and it was REALLY hot. I noticed this past August you were in Alaska, and I figure that hot weather in North Carolina had something to do with your choice for Alaska this year.Any way, I love you and your music. Have been listening all day. Have a great birthday. now you can collect Social Security! Come back to North Carolina this winter!

Just want to say Happy Birthday to the only person for whom we own all the CD's...and albums. You've given us more fun and enjoyment throughout the years, with your recorded music and live shows, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May the coming years be filled with more joy than you know what to do with. Happiest of Birthdays.

In 1985 (or thereabouts) my friend turned me onto John. We were soldiers stationed at Fort Hood. Went to see John in Austin, Tx. at a small playhouse. I still remember that crowd; older leftover folks from the 1960's that were the most respectful fans one could imagine. I had always been to the Grand Canyon type concerts; big, smokey, loud & unruly. John walks on stage- no props other than the guitar stand & I have been hooked ever since. I raised my children on John's songs, traveling all over the planet for 23 years in the Army. I was just a Soldier & I have been to Montreal.

Dear John After 47 years I get to write a dear John letter. I"ve been a fan for 25 years or so your music has seen me though good times and bad. More bad than good I sometimes think. But it always helped me keep my head above water. When I had to do a little stint in prison (I drinks a bit) I only picked up a guitar once, and that was on christmas day 2005. I think you know what song I played and didn't give a damn who heard it. I got quite a hand for Christmas in prison, one of the few things that made me smile while I was in. I've been writing for about 30 years myself and would love to get our heads together on some songs. Between the two of us I don't think there's much in life that hasn't been done. Thanks for the years John Prine and I hope you give us 62 more! Your friend Tony.

John: Happy Birthday! Thanks for all the great music, hopefully see ya in South Florida soon! Have a great Birthday! Travis

Hello John! My daughter Pandora is your self-professed biggest fan. We have tickets to your show at the Louisville Palace on the night of her 9th birthday, and I 'm trying to contain myself long enough to surprise her! Pandora first fell in love with your music through your Sweet Revenge album. She especially enjoys Grandpa was a Carpenter, Dear Abby, Please Don't Bury Me, and Sweet Revenge. I'm sure you have a full show planned for the night, but if you could sneak in one of her favorite songs my little girl would be ecstatic! Thank you for your music, you are a beloved presence in our home. See you November 14th!

Made the Oct. 3rd concert at DAR, as a guest of my 28 year old son, he heard enough about me being at the concerts in "72" and at Cellar Door seeing great ones getting started,John, Steve Goodman, Jimmy Buffet, aka "Marvin Gardens". At 61, I've come full circle with John, "Imagine my Surprise" when he brought out his son of 13, I have a daughter 13, he couldn't have been prouder, sometimes we get it right the second time round!. Thanks for a magical night that was special for all of us and especially to have the chance for him to see how much he is loved in the DC area. Lee Holt

I've listened to you all my life; I was going to see you in DC on Friday night, but everyone said it wasn't safe for a woman alone to be in DC at that time of night alone; am still singing the your saddest songs to myself! Happy birthday! You are the best. Someday I'd love to meet you & introduce you to my brother--a bluegrass guitar player in Oregon, who was invited to play at their state festival when the state organizer heard him at an open mike night! Well, as I always say: try to live your life so John Prine would write it in a song! I hope every day of your life is happy. Mary~a military brat so I've lived all over~Gypsy Eyes Smith

You can tell by listening to your music and watching you perform, that you are a very kind person. It is a life dream of mine to meet you in person! I live in Chicago, and travel to different states to see your concert. My husband, 12-year old son, and myself want to thank you for writing songs that have truly moved us and given us so much joy. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world. See you in Bloomington! (My in-laws traveled to MI to see you in concert, and ran into you in the lobby of their hotel--you were ordering a smoothie and a cookie, and were kind enough to smile and wave to my mother-in-law, who is handicapped, and you even dedicated a song to them.) They were so touched. And it affirmed what I suspected--that you are kind. At a recent Iris DeMent concert(by the way, thanks for turning us onto her!), she talked about what a fine human being you are.

Hi John, My Dad and I are huge fans of your music. I'm a 4th grade student from Colorado, we live on a farm and go to school in Fleming, Colorado. My Dad's the president of a local college here and we have been talking about how great it would be to have you come and perform here. He has a big theatre and Event Center where you could play. We would even feed you and put you up at the farm. My favorite song is "She is my everything" although Dad likes "Angel From Montgomery" best. If you can't come to Sterling, maybe you could book a date in Denver next year. We will be there if you decide to come enjoy some clean Rocky Mountain air. -Sarah and her Dad

Dear John, I became a fan of your's because of my late husband. He saw you on Austin City Limits during college and stayed home that night because he couldn't draw himself away from the TV. We were married in 1998 and he died in 2001 from a long battle with cancer, he was diagnosed a year after we were married. He was 31 and I was 30. We saw you at Clowe's Hall at Butler University and Starlight Theatre (now gone), at Butler University in Indianapolis. I became a fan instantly. I am remarried and I just now after 7 years have managed to pull out your CD's and listen to them and they take me to a wonderful place with my late husband. I am a huge fan and your music means more to me than you'll ever know! Sincerely, Lauren Crausare

John, we met in 1969 at the Earl of Old Town in the company of Stevie. Sure you remember! I'm bringing a rabid fan of yours to the concert in Washington on October 3. She's 67 and has been a fan since you went national. So what are the chances of two minutes back stage for the thrill of her lifetime? Thanks, David litwack@attglobal.net

Hey John , I've been a fan for about thirty six years! Ever since I heard some of your music on Chg radio WXRT 93.1 where they started out following a spanish station approx. 2:00 am for a short time then expanded the times and the rest is history. Well my question to you would be I remember a song that was about Christmas and how the father didn't have any money for gifts to his kids because he shot up with drugs and a reference to a Cadillac in his arm I've tried to rack my memory for so long and cant seem to recall the song. It was around 1974 or so maybe 75. With your gifted sense of music maybe you can help. Thanks so much.
Joe - try looking Sam Stone and see if that is the song - thanks, Reeda

Mary Brelsford (Okie Sister)
Your Birthday is October 10....my late Mother's would have been October 9....Mine is October 3 and my Oki Sis, Susan, is October 5th. We will celebrate with you in Kentucky October 25th...counting down now - can't wait. Then Tulsa in December...you make my heart feel good...Love you Bye...Mary

To me, there's one word that can describe John's music: true. It's straight as an arrow, and honest as the day is long. His wisdom is pure brilliance, and for a tough stretch there, it was the only thing that gave my soul any solace. There's reassurance in his honesty. There's genius in his simplicity, And that always-clever delivery never fails to make my heart smile. I only ever wanted to be two things "when I grow up," an indian chief and John Prine. When I heard Sam Stone, I put the head-dress away.

I live in the UK and my dad introduced me to John Prine several years ago. John's music was so much a part of Dad's life. He would put his records or CDs on, turn the volume right up, close his eyes and sing and dance like an angel. My dear Dad died this year and I just wanted to say thank you to John Prine for all the pleasure, laughter and emotion he brought into my Dad's too short life.

Ever since hearing Sam Stone on an Atlantic records compilation album I've wanted to find out more about John Prine. In 1973 I bought a whole bunch of albums from a guy who was going into the Army to my delight , Diamonds in the Rough was among those albums. From there I set about finding as much John prine material I could find it was not easy as very few people in Scotland had heard of John Prine at that time. I also discovered to my dismay that a lot of the material I was looking for had been deleted by Atlantic Records making my quest even harder . However I persevered and today I have a comprehensive collection of John Prine records and CDs And after all this time I am still spreading the John Prine gospel I bought myself an old archtop , learned a few chords and bore the pants off any one who"ll listen and even a few who wont Keep it up John, God Bless. P.S. If your ever back in the Glasgow area ETC. ( I wish). P.P.S thank God for Oh Boy Records. Cheers John.

I got hooked on John when I was about 13 or 14 years old at 13th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival. I just turned 49 years old yesterday and still a loyal fan. Fair & Square is my by far, all favorite album. The only other opportunity I've had to see you perform, was with Steve Goodman at the Tower Theater, in Philadelphia. I guess that was around 1979. I made my kids listen to your music when they were little. They're finally starting to get it. You should introduce your kids to different kinds of music. Yours makes sense. Just wanted to let you know you have another 49 year old groupie who has been following your music for years. I got my husband hooked on you as well. We love to visit Nashville. It would be our dream to see you perform in Nashville. Do you have anything scheduled anytime soon. (I wasn't able to obtain tickets to the last one) thanks so much for your music. Your lyrics have helped me get through life. They helped a young kid, young woman and now mature woman accept the fact that it's ok to be who you are. You are what you are........

John, My husband and I have tickets to see you in Paducah Kentucky on Sat. Oct. 25th. I am surprising him for his 30th birthday (yes 30th birthday). We enjoy your music so much. We have never seen you before and this is going to be the best present ever. He is currently finishing his masters degree in history at Southern Illinois University and works extremely hard every day. When he's stressed out from all his reading he enjoys listening to your music. He(we) loves your view on just about everything from fishing, married life, growing old and war. Your songs tend to teach their own history lesson if you listen close enough. I know you like to talk between your songs so I know it's a long shot but maybe you could tell Nathan Happy Birthday. If not you might just be able to pick us out in the crowd (I think we're in the first few rows because of the pre-sale tickets). I hope to see more of our generation there. It's a shame that more of the 20-30 year olds don't know who you are. We're trying to spread the word. We'll know we've done a good job raising our daughter, who's 12, when one the the things she can come to us and say " I do like this guys music". She's getting there.... Sincerely, Krista

Hey, John-- Have you heard the Chicago Cubs song that Eddy Vedder has done (can be found via youtube, of course). If you take a listen, you might recognize that he's borrowed the melody for "Dear Abby." Hmmm...I like to hear musicians talk to one another via song, so maybe you better add a stanza directed toward Vedder if you perform the song in the near future.

Sarah
Hi Mr. Prine. I have been listening to your music since I was a child. And i just fulfilled a dream of mine the other weekend. I went to see you in Portland Maine. And when you walked out on the stage, i didn't know whether i was going to cry, faint, or spazz out, but mostly i was a stunned bunny. It was a wonderful show. I just wanted to say thank you for your music. I'm a young mother or a two year old boy, and I work all the time. So sometimes, my I lose my head completely. But i go into my kitchen, run the water in the sink, and sing with your music as I do the dishes. And in half an hour, I'm human again. Your music reminds me of what's important, and what isn't. There's lots i'd like to say, but mostly, thank you, your music has helped me in so many ways, and i can't wait to see you again! Sarah - Fredericton, New Brunswick

Since 1980, John Prine's music has made me laugh at my own foibles, becoming more sympathetic to the human life experience/ John Prine writes and sings melodic epics with a fresh American perspective. His lyrics and melodies are completely unique, humorous, loving, metaphoric, and sincere. I've seen and listened to him perform twice . . . once in Dallas in the early '90s, and again last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. While his bass and guitar accompanists are superb, I particularly enjoyed his solo performance, which was so intimate with the audience that it sent chills down my spine. Thank you, John, for your outstanding performance, which I will always remember. Bless you and your family. You, Mr. Prine, are legendary and worthy of a spot in the Hall of Fame for your self-created musical genre.

John and Lynne
We have been fans of John Prine since 1983 - first seeing him in concert in Washington, DC. We saw him in St. Petersburg, FL last night and he's never sounded better! In these times of uncertainty and stress it was so refreshing to be in the company of a consummate song writer -story teller, and let ourselves be swept away by his unique voice to a simpler time and place. Thank you John for your years of devotion to your song writing, and for sharing your passion with all of us. Your rendition of "Hello in There" was the best we've ever heard. Hope the Coach enjoyed it as much as we did. We love you John - keep on doing what you're doing and go have an awesome 62nd birthday!! John and Lynne, North Port, FL

Hey, there, John. I may be a day late and a dollar short here..... You're coming to the Maxwell King Center TONIGHT! I just got tickets 2 days ago. You have been a major influence in my family for many years. Handed down generation after generation. I began playing music at 19, and writing songs about the same time. I just recently come up with something to record with, not the best quality by far, but it works if you're looking for the "in-the-raw" effect. Yesterday I recorded, for the first time ever on CD, and if at all possible I'd love to return to you the gift you've given me in my life, MUSIC..........of which is influenced by you and many others. Let me know if there is some way you can accept it from me at the show tonight, or if I can mail it to you. If it's not too much of a pain, I'd like to have you sign my guitar for me. Layla orchestra seat Q43 You have inspired me to write the music that comes naturally to me, rather than worrying about the "Correct Wordage" Thank you for all the "Prine Moments"

This isn't a story that I have to tell, just a question.... I have a friend that absolutely LOVES you!! One of his lifetime goals is to meet John Prine. His father passed away about 4 years ago and he was a big fan as well, it was a father/son thing they had. They wanted to meet you one day together. So what I'm looking for is a way to find out how I could make this happen for him.... Is there a way to get backstage passes, and if so, how? He goes to all your concerts around the New England area. So, if you could point me in the right direction it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank-you! Amanda

John... Looking forward to seeing/hearing you tomorrow night at the King Performing Arts Center in Melbourne, FL.. It is a terrific venue w/outstanding acoustics...Don't forget us folks that are coming from Orange City that will be up high in the balcony.... Welcome to the Sunshine State!!! Hope you are worth missing the Florida State/Wake Forest game over...

John, A friend and I went to your show in Portland,Me at the Merrill Auditorium on Sept 12th 2008. We were thrilled with your show that lasted non-stop for well over two hours.Wow!! Your song lyrics are so brilliant, to say the least. I hope you would consider coming to Fredericton,N.B. Canada to do a concert at the Playhouse in the near future. Hopefully you'll have a new cd out soon. Thoroughly enjoy your music and I hope you can bring it to our little corner of the world in the near future. Thanks! for providing such a fantastic musical event. Absolutely Loved it!

I first heard of John Prine in my senior year of high school, old people, I was a candy striper in a nursing home at the time. All my children were sung to sleep by Prine songs and know them well. 4 grown kids, soon to be a grandma, and a recently finished gig as a director of nursing... Prine is still the vibration that soothes my soul.

I met a very special man, Vic about 6 months and he introduced me to your music. We are going to your concert on October 3, 2008. I would like to request you sing our song, "A Good Time". Thanks!! Lois

Hi John, My husband Denis is a GREAT BIG Fan of yours and I finally got him tickets for your show in Clearwater Florida on Friday night. I have a small bar here on Pine Island Florida called "Ragged Ass Saloon" and we have all local musicians that sing there and your songs are played allot. In fact some say they have met you! I will throw some names at you and maybe you will remember some, they have become my family here and I truly love there stories. They are Jimmy Lewis, Downtown Larry Brown, Brent Moyer, Sarah Mahan, Michael Mahan, the late and great Joannah Mahan just to name a few. They have all played or still play at my little bar. But if you could personally maybe meet my husband Friday night it would make his world, he has had two strokes in one year and is not like he used to be but he always finds comfort to listening to your songs. Maybe I can get a Ragged Ass Shirt to you Friday with all the peoples names that have sang at the bar called "Keep Pine Island Weird, Save the Music"!!! Thanks for your time, Sincerely, Fatina Reese

Last night I went to hear you in Lowell w/ my husband and friends. It was such a fabulous show. You were incredible in terms of voice and stamina. We'd been waiting to hear you for many years and you more than made every moment special. I come away with your joy but also how well you are able to make real the loneliness we can feel. Real poetry. The only downer was that I bought 2 of your cd's and on - the Standards Songs for Average People had no cd in it. It was taped together and not sealed. I didn't notice that until I got home. I go to as many concerts as I can and I've never had this experience before. I know this isn't your personal fault. The concert was terrific but it does leave a bad feeling. I don't know who to complain to as I'm sure no one will accept responsibility. So I am complaining to you - and you gave me more than my money's worth at the concert. A Loyal Fan. Niki

Hey John! When are you going to have a Canadian Tour? You've got a lot fans up here. Sure like you latest cd!

John, I was at your show with Bonnie Raitt in Beaumont, Texas, around 1987, I reckon. I came to see you, because your songs had scratched a long-neglected part of my soul. I was embarrassed for Bonnie Raitt for the way she assumed she was the main draw. She sang Angel from Montgomery as if she lived it, and only gave a nod to you. It was as if Oprah Winfrey had sung the Star Spangled Banner, and just before singing, she had said, "I want y'all to meet my good old friend, Francis Scott Key. Take a bow Frank," and patted him on the back. Anyway, I was on Youtube watching Springsteen today and thought about John Prine. I watched a few of your songs. Now I am old enough to know that pretty girls get tired of hearing how pretty they are, because it embarrasses them and no matter how you put it, someone before you has said it better. But now that I've got an e-mail address that may get to you, I have to say that your songs have meant a lot to me. I went to the Booby Hatch about 1992, after I had a diving accident that should have killed me, drank too much and flunked out of grad school. Recuperating at my folks' house in Groves, Texas, I took up bass fishing, and it became a kind of religion for me. I say all that to say this: My brother Dan had given me John Prine: John Prine years before, and though I'd never seen the Green River, I bemoaned the loss of Paradise with you as if I'd lived there too late myself. So one weekend, I set off to Lake Sam Rayburn with some beer and an inner tube with a bass-boat seat in it, and my flippers. Out to stalk the angry fish of the clearwater. It was the only time in my life or anyone else's stories that a man ever caught a catfish with a spinner bait, swear to god. Anyway, beer notwithstanding, nights at camp were long and lonely. I had bought your latest tape at the time, I think. I remember "It's Big Ol' Goofy World" and "Jesus: The Missing Years". I'd sit by my fire with the window open on my truck and sing along with you. I don't know anything about your life or where you come from, but I'll tell you this: When a person feels like he missed something and the world around him is pleasantly gliding on past him one or two notches above, he can cue up almost any of your songs and be assured that he is firmly in the narrative of the human story. Thank you, John, for making being plain human a worthy pursuit.

My Prine story is when I was cooking for a local supermarket chain and got transferred to a new store. I was in the kitchen working and my new manager ( a great guy and huge JP fan named Johnny Miller) came in to meet and chat with me. We got on the subject of music and he asked "ever hear of a guy named John Prine?" I said "hear of him, I love him." He looked at me with some doubt ( I think he thought I was trying to kiss his ass ) and asked what my favorite song was. I started singing Paradise and he started singing along. He allowed that I really was a fan and told me that he had an act doing Prine songs at small clubs and coffeehouses. After work we went to his house and he played and we sang Prine songs til the wee hours. I hope I run into Johnny at the show in Lowell tonight as he is living in Maine now and I haven't seen him in years. Maybe JP will bring us together again. If you read this Johnny Miller time, I lost your phone number call me, I'd love to chat.
Okay, I actually have a lot of John Prine stories, but 1 more to share here. The first time I saw John live he introduced me to Leon Redbone's music. It was in 1975 at the Music Inn in Lenox, Ma. One of the best shows I've ever been to, it was a triple bill with Leon opening and David Bromberg next. When Leon came on stage everyone was asking who the hell this guy was. Leon pulled a pint of jack out of his back pocket and in his inimitable voice said okay then or something to that effect and started playing. The crowd went nuts, he had 5,000 instant fans, and we all enjoyed a tremendous show from all 3 acts.

Dear John, My "adopted" brother has been singing your songs, while playing his beautiful Martin, for years and years. I bought him your CD "In Spite of Ourselves" and he and a lady friend do a killer job on a few of them. He is a former Marine; is at the moment a little "down on his luck" and suffering depression (I did NOT tell you that)! He just had his 59th birthday, and I can think of no better gift (belated tho' it may be) than an autographed CD from you. I am on disability myself, but will "scratch with the chickens" to get the money to pay for it. I just helped him get a Friday nite gig at a local eatery, and he mentioned to the owner that in addition to several of his own compositions, he will be playing several of your tunes. The guy was "wowed"...he's a former musician as well. Can you make this happen? I know it would not just make his day, it would make his YEAR. A total Prine fan, Diane...PS...He's got some fantastic "stuff" if you're looking for material.

Golly...there's so much I want to say. But I want to say it in a way no one else has. Hello In There makes me cry. Loretta (tribute to Towne Van Zandt) haunts me-why does she 'wear them sevens on her sleeve'? The question is not chicken or egg, the question is Prine or Dylan. I hear so much Dylan in Prine and so much Prine in Dylan. My heart tells me they must have crossed paths. Or they were twins separated at birth. Or something cosmic happened. Grew up in NY and rock and roll. Who knew? Moved to Florida, made a new friend who grew up in Weaverville, NC. He's a bad drunk but the boy knows his music. I got a computer before he did. He said get online and find Sam Stone. I was in love and would have found the outer reaches of space if he asked me to. I found Sam Stone. And then I found more John Prine. I just indiscriminately downloaded anything I could find with John Prine's name on it. Made a cd and brought it to friend. Put it in the cd player and for the first time, the man said, "I love you"...I almost got excited until he said, "For finding my music". Turns out his music, music I never heard, is now MY music. We're back to being just friends and I tell him the best thing he ever gave me was the music. John Prine. Tell Linda to come back from Mars...there's no Prine up there.
I have been known to frequent a certain libation establishment. One evening, someone put money in the jukebox. All of a sudden...I heard John Prine. I looked up, looked around. "Who played John Prine???" A gentleman allowed that he had played Prine. I live in St. Pete and I as I chatted with this gentleman, he proceeded to tell me where Prine lives and about Prine Sightings. I'm not going to disclose anything here for John's sake. The man's gotta live, right? But I went berserk and sent letters to a local flyer...John'll know...as well as the local newspaper offering John dinner. Just wanted to chat with him. He wouldn't even have to bring his guitar. I just wanted to talk to him. Both papers neglected to post my letter to John. Maybe that's as it should be. I think someone should contact PBS and have them do a Prine night...see the kind of money they could rake in from us Prine fans. And I would finally get to see my favorite poet. And I love the voice. I don't think people talk enough about the voice. Pre or post cancer...it's still John. And it still homes in on heart and mind. John, I arrived late...but I arrived ready to sit a long spell and stay awhile.

I was listening to your music on the way to work today..."All the Best". Had to listen to it about 5 times...it was written so well. Now I'll have to cover it at the next open mic. This morning, you helped me become a better songwriter. thank you, Jenn

Part of my healing process from the grief of 9/11 was to make my very own "Bucket List" for my life - and then commit to working my way through it as long as I can. My list includes seeing John Prine live. It's my 46th b'day week. The present I gave my self came from my Bucket List. This week, on 9/11, I'm flying from Seattle to Boston, then riding the bus to Portland, ME, to see John Prine live Friday, 9/12. Life is good - and John's music is part of what makes my life great! See you soon.

Here is my John Prine story and it is true.

Bill B. - Used to be NE AR but now Louisville
Been listening to JP since the early 70s. My married buddy was parked on a dark gravel road, drunk of course, with a girl he'd picked up earlier at a bar. It was very cold outside. He called me on his cell phone & begged me to bring him some gas because he'd been on empty for a long time had no cash on him. He was afraid he couldn't make it to the gas station. And of course he wanted to get some nookie. So I got the gas, drove out to where they were parked, poured in the gallon or two, and as I peeped in the foggy window of Tommy's car I saw a naked ugly girl look back at me like a deer in the park, as the chorus "..ain't it funny like an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring" roared from my Explorer, and I thought, "Yep."

Suzanne - Seattle
I just wanted to say 'Thank You'. I discovered JP's music about 10 years ago. Up until that very moment, my entire musical experience had been comprised of commercial radio. Even the college radio station at my major public university was owned by Clearchannel, there were no student DJs. At the time, I thought the radio was alright, but I knew there HAD to be more. It left me feeling empty. I had no real reason to believe it, but I was convinced that music could do more. It was around that time that I heard about this brand-new thing called "Napster" and went nosing around. Randomly pulling down songs by artists I'd never heard of, I downloaded "Angel from Montgomery", took a listen, and felt like my heart stopped. There are very few times in life that you can point to and say "There! That's the exact moment things changed!" Even more rare are the times when you get to realize that a change is happening at the very instant it does. In the 10 years since, I've become a musician and songwriter, I moved to a music-centric city and now volunteer at one of the best non-commercial radio stations in the country. I'm surrounded by music, musicians, and reality. Life is lush and full and satisfying...and it all started with that one song. So, Thank You, John! Your life's work has had a significant and measurable impact on my life, and I'm just some random person out in cyberspace. There are many, many more of us, invisible to the naked eye. PS Oh... and I buy my albums these days, I no longer download them. That was a necessity for a different time.

Andy - UK
I have just recently downloaded allot of your stuff from I-tunes, and been playing it at work, so I reckon you have another 20 odd new fans, all of them got right into it.. Made the day allot brighter...Nice one to ya ..

Dan - Montreal
Became a fan in 1975, saw you for the first and only time since, in the mid '80's, open air concert, in the round, in the park, in Toronto. If you ever do make it to the east coast of Canada please make sure to add a date in Montreal. Pick the right venue and I'd be surprised if you didn't have to add a second show. Alot of fans up here. Anyway, you could just come visit ... lots of things to do here ... there's 1 nudie bar for every church ... Mark Twain visited once and said he " couldn't spit without hitting a church" Hope and pray you can make it here someday soon. Dan

Justin Blair from North River Nova Scotia

Labor Day 08, Sitting around the day after a jam-campfire-party in the Ryan's back yard listening to Fair and Square - perfect weather, chickens and goats, great outdoor speakers, sitting under the walnut tree - and the perfect tunes from our favorite John. We love your music -all of it - the new is as great as the old - we just love you, Man. We played many of your songs last night too, you are an inspiration and a teacher to so many, play on JP! Oh, and thanks to the jpshrine we have a better chance of getting that weird chord right!!Oh, and, Midge just wanted wanted to say that she is your youngest-oldest fan.

Mr. Prine, Thanks so much for performing in Fairbanks, Alaska. My husband and I really enjoyed your performance, and we hope you come back again!

jpparadise
ah, Mr. Prine. I keep reading how you want to play smaller venues - take heed. In British Columbia we have small venues. You can play in Kamloops, Prince George - stay the hell away from Vancouver/Victoria. 2010 is coming and the prices are not what one of the working class could afford ...i.e. hotel rooms, etc. However, if it be that you do not have a choice, well - sure, I'd come on the Greyhound to Vancouver! Please consider smaller venues in British Columbia. Oh yes, if you would like a real small venue - my backyard is opened As is the accommodation of a camper - it's free! teehee, I would not charge you - the big bull might - but I wouldn't. Yes, we have them free range cows/bulls around here, YIKES! You cannot teach a bull John Prine, you run!

LiZa, Anchorage AK
I LOVE YOU JP!! That was me who couldn't contain herself at your show here in Anchorage last week and yelled I LOVE YOU JP during a quiet moment. And such a gentleman, you said "well I love you too". haha. Thanks man. I needed that. JP, the first song I heard of yours was Christmas In Prison, back in the 70's and I fell in love you then. You have pulled me up so many times, I'd never be able to count them all. I have cried, laughed and just sat in deep thought with you. I read your anthology to Steve and I bawl like a baby. I really do love ya John, even though you've never known it - you've always been there for me. I so want to just give you a big hug before the first one of us buys the farm. Yer my boy JP! big alaskan hug for you. Liza

DEAR ABBY(OOOPS) JOHN, I FIRST HEARD YOUR MUSIC IN THE LATE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S PLAYED BY FRIENDS AND SMALL BANDS IN BARS. YOUR MUSIC IS FUN AND EASY TO PLAY AND BEAUTIFUL AND SOULFUL AND I'M SURE YOU HAVE HEARD ALL THAT BEFORE. IT IS THAT YOUR MUSIC ALSO MAKES PEOPLE WANT TO SING AND PLAY TOO. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR, I TRIED. I CAN'T. I LOVE TO SING TO YOUR SONGS..ALONE. I CAN'T REALLY SING EITHER. MY MOTHER WAS ALSO FROM KENTUCKY. SHE HAD 5 CHILDREN ON THE FLOOR OF A LOG CABIN BEFORE COMING NORTH TO INDIANA IN THE LATE 40'S. MY SISTER AND I WERE BORN IN INDIANA. IT IS BEAUTIFUL THERE AND MY FAMILIES LAND (NEARLY 900 ACRES THAT WAS PASSED DOWN THRU THE YEARS) ENDED UP BEING STRIP MINED. MY UNCLE JUST DIDN'T READ THE FINE FINE PRINT IN THE LEASE THAT SAID AFTER SO MANY LEASE RENEWALS THEY COULD STRIP IT. I HATE TO ADMIT IT BUT I HAD FORGOTTEN YOU, LIKE ALOT OF OTHER FUN HAPPY THINGS FROM MY YOUNGER DAYS, UNTIL I SAW YOU ON AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. I HEARD YOU FIRST AND RECOGNIZED YOUR VOICE, IT HAD CHANGED BUT WAS STILL YOU. I BOUGHT THE FAIR AND SQUARE CD AND THE "SOUNDSTAGE" DVD SO I HOPE I AM HELPING YOU OUT WITH YOUR RETIREMENT FUNDS..HA.HA. I JUST WANTED TO SAYS THANKS FOR STILL BEING HERE SINGING AND PLAYING FOR US. YOU MAKE THE WORLD A MUCH BETTER PLACE. I WILL GET TO SEE YOU LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BLOOMINGTON IN ON NOV. 15. I CAN'T WAIT! HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED DOING "HOW LUCKY" IN YOUR SHOW? KEEP ON KEEPING ON. GOD BLESS YOU JOHN.

Hi John, Been a fan for over 25 years. I have been to 3 of your concerts. Twice in Toronto(we took a bus load up!), once while vacationing in South Carolina. I recently was vacationing in Ireland. I had the pleasure of meeting your good friend Philip Donnely at Birdies. Had the pleasure of playing a few prine songs with him. I asked him and I am asking you when are you coming to Canada? I live 90 Minutes east of Toronto but I am sure there are plenty of fans in our city. Sure would love to see you here !! pjroy44@hotmail.com

I've been a fan since 1973. MY Christmas gift was tickets to Taft in Cinn. Ohio. in February row 14. Oh what a treat! Due to an ice storm we were unable to attend. Now, that was bad luck for me. Worst luck, was reading about the kick butt performance that was given to an empty house. The shining review in the Cincinnati Enquirer describing the stellar performance given by J.P. If only I didn't have to read what I missed. Maybe I could forget my misfortune. But according to the article J.P. stated" You call this an ice storm" . I live in Indiana and" gosh darn it "there was a level 3 snow emergency! No one was allowed on the road! It was a bad day!

Hello John Prine, My husband and I were introduced to your music about 12 years ago, since then we have listened to all we could get our hands on. So much of the music is touching, relative to our lives and hilarious. We have since our introduction add two new fans to your music. Our son and daughter can both sing along with many of the songs and even better it has become our trail music when we horseback ride and camp. I really appreciate the joy your music brings to my husband and the entire family. We will be seeing you in concert in Paducah KY at the end of October and are really looking forward to it, It will be our late anniversary present to ourselves. Thanks again for the great tunes and family fun times, Tracy from Southern Illinois

Jasper-- Gatlinburg, TN
Dear John Prine, I write this letter to thank you. You have definitely changed my life, and on several occasions you may have actually saved it. A little history: I first heard you via several LPs thanks to my best college friend, Bill, now deceased. That was back in 1977-82. I've only been to three of your shows and that was long ago-- remember Knoxville, TN? You were great, by the way. You spoke to the crowd like we were family. And all people are, after all, aren't we? You get that. Most folks don't. I used to have every LP, tape, and/or CD you made from 1971 to 199?... but they've all been variously lost, lent out, worn out, or stolen. Trying to build that collection back up, but it ain't easy. I've lived a largely irresponsible life of ups and many downs. Since I was a child, I've suffered from severe anxiety and suicidal depression, compounded later by substance abuse of all kinds, the worst being alcoholism. I've been eternally searching for I don't know what, and followed many paths that led nowhere. Here's the thing: I could always count on you to tell the truth. Life's fun, bittersweet, harsh, cruel, funny, contradictory, poignant realities were always right there in your deceptively simple lyrics. You're an excellent musician and performer, but above all you are a POET in the truest sense. Not only do you describe life as you see it, you help others see it in their own new ways. You never preach, you paint. We get to interpret the art in infinite ways, on infinite levels. It is astonishing how much that has helped me over the years, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks, John. Peace & Love, Jasper

Dear John Prine, Sir, friend, I have been listening to your music since I was a young man, I am now 50 years old, yet your music has never aged. I have been to many of your concerts, and I’m not really a concert goer. I now live in Ky and deeply regret I will not be able to see you in concert in Ky this Oct, due the fact I will be out of country on a cruse. I attended one of your concerts in Virginia Beach back in the late 70’s early 80’s. There was a write up in one of the local newspapers where you granted an interview. You said you didn’t want to get real famous. You liked the small crowds. When you were ready to retire; you were going to hold a contest to find someone good that you could make famous. Is this still something you are considering? If so when and where do you plan to do it? I have a deep love for your music (as all your fans do) I would not want to miss that for anything. Jerry

Rick - Georgia
I guess I'm a little late, but better late than never in finding your music, thank GOD for sirius or i wouldn't have ever have heard of you, once again thanks for the great music you put out. I only hope to be able to see you live one day(being a trucker ain't easy)well thanks again and have a great day.. just a fan, Rick

Dear John: (ha what a opening line)/ I have seen you many times in concerts around this area. I always try to turn people on to your music whenever possible. I began this tradition years ago with my four children. Needless to say, they all love your music as much as I do. Come back to Kansas City, Lawrence or anywhere close. Thanks for your talent.

Dear Mr. Prine, The best non concert I ever did not attend was driving my Volkswagen bus (a beautiful azure blue and bondo grey) up Weber Canyon Utah, trying to get to Park West to see you. The tire blew at Devils Slide, so we sat by the side of Weber River with a jug of table wine and had our own concert. It started out soprano, and ended up very deep alto. And the whole time some very nice miner from Croyton was trying to read the Book of Mormon to us as he changed my tire. It didn't have the heart to tell him that those guys had already booted me out. I finally saw you in tux at Abravenal Hall many years later. Loved the back-up. No jug wine this time. What I would like you to see is the end of my brothers eulogy from 2003. He died from over medication, and after listening to you, well... "Larry Wayne Wilcox died of a broken heart. His accomplishments in life were not many, if viewed through the eyes of worldly people, but were huge in the respect of those that he loved. .......His aspirations were not recognized by most....but he allowed some of us a peek into his complicated world. His heart was true, and his intent was good. For those of the kind and true, thank you for your love for him. For others, please grant yourself the blessing of seeing people like Larry. Larry had no forgotten dreams. They were all very real to him. So if your walking down the street some time, and spot some ancient hollow eyes, please just don't pass them by and stare. Say Hello in there. Hello. Good Bye... Leak and Lulu." Just wanted you to know. I know the words are not exact. Some people thought I came up with that. Just said "John Prine" . I even had some say "Oh Ya, John Prine". Oh, and By the way, I know an excellent spot for pan size trout on the up side of Jordanlle, just out side of Park City. A little tributary that dumps into the reservoir. Even my husband can catch fish there, but I'm not suppose to tell anyone about it, cuz they will have to kill me. Love your music (attitude) forever, Becky Larsen williamlarsen@comcast.net

John, Why don't you come to California to perform? I know for a fact that you have some big fans here. My husband has some great memories of listening to "Dear Abby" when he was throwing newspapers in Riverside, California a long time ago.

"Malamute" Mike Hendricks
Loved your Cerritos concert last year. Thanks for signing Knik's skirt! We got tickets for Anchorage concert in a week or so, but unfortunately, Knik ( Trudy ) is now hospitalized with a serious medical issue. Doesn't look like we will be able to fly up to Alaska to see you again, much to our dismay, this time around. Hopefully, she will recover and we can see you someplace else. Have a great concert without us. ( If you have trouble recalling us, we were the ones with your lyrics written all over our shirts at Cerritos...no wine and cheese crowd for us..lol). Best of luck to you and the band and I hope Alaska shows you her hospitality! The people there are great!

I was just listening to Lake Marie! I'm going to be at your show in Paducah Kentucky. Looking forward to it. My house is full of John Prine posters and pictures but this will be my first show!!

Don't know if I have ever said thanks for your music...but thought I would say it now. I have always liked your tunes, but my friend Johnny from Boise (lived there for 20 years) made me a lover of your music. So, all that said, thank you, so much for sharing your soul. Johnny knows good music, he plays a mean fiddle :-) Your music makes my day, lifts my mood, and gives me perspective. Love you for it, Tam

hey there mr. prine with great humility i invite you to hear a song about war. i'm the father of a soldier, back from his first deployment, and planning to redeploy to afghanistan next year. this is a 'reality of war' song. it's called 'all the good men' the opening verse: all the good men finally come home marching no more, some all alone lying beneath flags just as still as a stone riding past fields where they used to play back to the towns where they would have stayed finally home where their mothers prayed through the night no more tears in their weary eyes no more prayers to those silent skies when old men talk war, young men will die far away the song's at my myspace site: http://www.myspace.com/karmafarmers if you don't listen you're still a saint

Someone has to hear Joe Pug, he is an amazing singer/song writer. I am just a fan who thinks he needs a label. I love John Prine and now I love Joe Pug!! I bought tickets to see JJ Grey & Mofro in Nashville and Joe happened to open for them. My mouth fell open in awe, his voice sinks deep inside you, much like yours does . M r. John, i would like to take a minute to say thank you for your music. its certainly one of a kind and I'm grateful for artists such as yourself. i knew much of your music by heart at a young age hearing my father playing it, when he was home, and it stuck with me my whole life. any time i go into a billiard room or a bar i fill the juke box up with you. it sets the perfect mood for the environment i like to enjoy myself in. i also find it changes the mood of others who may have never heard you they listen and learn too. when i say artists such as yourself I'm only referring to one other. Paul Simon, i listen to you both quite often and its what music to me should be. thanks again

John - Back in 1973/4 the college day was never finished until your first album "John Prine" was played a few times. My joined-at-the-hip college buddy owned it. When we graduated away went that album but my desire to continue the day-ending tradition was restored when I finally got my own copy of it in a large Philadelphia record store a year later. That album went on to be a yearly ritual of playing music daily and loudly during the year-ending vacation I always took when the family was out doing their thing. I finally caved into the "CD" thing in 2000 when I sold all of my LP's and began a CD collection. "Souvenirs" was among the first CD's I purchased. When cars finally came with CD players my year-ending loud playing tradition became a daily ritual. Life on the road suddenly took on a whole different perspective. A daily dose of John Prine - it doesn't get any better. This has been going on for years now. My sudden desire to write you a "Big Thanks" was inspired by a friend who was listening to satellite radio recently and he heard a John Prine song(?) and asked me if I had heard of this "new" artist. I played a few songs from "Souvenirs" and I recognized that same blown away look I had in 1973 when first listening to "John Prine". We will be anxiously awaiting the year 2030 for the next time you re-record the songs of "Souvenirs". In the mean please don't stop what you are doing - please! Doug

Lolly- in the woods in Kenai, Alaska
It sure would be great if you could squeeze in a concert in Kenai or Soldotna, Alaska next week- the only other show on the Peninsula sold out immediately in Homer and we are starving here.....Love your music and your show, and you are an inspiration to me as a musician.

Hello John, This feels like nothing less than writing an old friend or family member. I live in central illinois and grew p listening to your music my whole life. My parents were what some might call hippies, and expressed how your music had an authenticity and genuine quality that is not found very many places. I am 40 now and am still listening to your music almost daily. I have learned to play a few of your tunes and I must say I enjoy playing your music as much as listening to it. I teach social studies and played The Great Compromise for my students when going over the sixties and Vietnam. The kids loved the song and some have sought out more of your music since. I felt proud to introduce them to your music and I hope they get a life time of enjoyment from it as I have. I just wanted to express how much I have always enjoyed your music, and express my gratitude for your great contribution to my life through your insightful lyrics and toe tapping tunes.

Looks like you aren't going to make it here in September...My sister and I, "The Okie Sisters" were in Little Rock...your best show yet. We don't want to stalk you, so tell me how to get 'Meet and Great' passes for Paducah, cause we will be there! We will wait around on you even if we don't have them. Our husbands are making this road trip with us, but we'll be on our own that night. They do understand how much we love you - have for 35 years, and don't see any end in sight. Can't wait to see you. Again, thank you for making difficult times easier, you always do...all I have to do is listen. My birthday is October 3rd, and my sisters is October 5th, and isn't your boys the 4th? Us old Okie Sisters are going to party in style ....with our Number One Man - You. Love you bye - Mary

Dear JP, I was turned on to your music by a fellow sailor from southwestern Indiana. He was astonished that I hadn't heard of John Prine being from Tennessee. Being raised on Charlie Daniels and the like(story-songwriters). After listening to your Prime Prine album(yes it was that long ago), it wasn't too long after that that I got my first guitar. I had a buddy show me three of the basic chords(G,C,&D) and I went from there. Your songwriting style led me to try my hand at writing my own songs. I came up with such songs as 'Do It Simple'(about being buried and the stuff that goes with it), 'Do You Think She's Blind?', When(The Whens Won't Win Anymore.), 'The Ballad Of Junior' (about a Viet Nam vet that died down on his luck), 'Warts and All'(take me as you see me), 'She' the One For Me', 'The Conscience Knows', 'Geriatric Swinger', and even one entitled loosely 'The Way the World Goes 'Round'. Although the last one sounds nothing like the one you wrote. Every time you come to Knoxville, I am there with no worse seats than eighth row center. Hope to see you the next time you head our way. On one of those sites where they ask a bunch of questions about you, one of the questions was, "Who would I like most to meet?" Behind meeting my great, great, great grandparents(on both sides) before they met each other, it was John Prine's name next on the list. Keep the excellent music coming our way and if you get to where you need some help, just send me an E-mail at ceneal2@hotmail.com. Serious but realistic. Take care and may you ALWAYS have friends to help you through the hard times and pat you on the back when you need it! Your Fan, CLINTON a.k.a. CISCO

Dear John, I need to ask a favor. Here in a few days at the end of July, a fellow named Keith Sims will be retiring from the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection. When Keith came to our office in the mid 90's somewhere about ten minutes into our first conversation we both came to the conclusion that we fell in love with your music somewhere around halfway through the first verse of ILLEGAL SMILE, and Keith has followed you like a bloodhound ever since. Ya'll are look alikes, you know. We both recalled that the first time we saw you was in the early 70's in a little auditorium on Western Kentucky University's campus called Van Meter Auditorium. You know one of those little theater places with the balcony around the top. I don't think Keith has missed seeing you since within a couple of hundred mile radius around Kentucky. I guess you can tell by now I haven't got up the nerve to ask, but...is there any way possible that you could "won't you write him a letter, won't you give him a call?" (i.e. autographed picture). "Signnned Bewildered." If this is possible or if there is some other way I need to go about this is there some way you could let me know. Saw JP for the 1st time in Denver , Colorado in 1984 at The Rainbow Music Hall . Never heard of John Prine until several of my fellow U.S.P.S. co-workers said that they were going AND mentioned that JP was a former mail carrier himself in Chicago . That was a memorable killer concert and have seen him several times since , mostly in my hometown of Syracuse , New York . Am SO looking forward to seeing you with my friend in ANC at the end of August as you never disappoint !

David Douthitt-Rush
My wife and I took my father-in-law, Jerry Douthitt, to see JP at Butler University in Indiana, a few years ago. Jerry was so excited, and he said John Prine was the second genius he knew, after Hank Williams. He got three beers at the concession stand and said, "Here we go. We have the best of intentions." He loved the concert and yelled "Rock and Roll!" several times during John and Nanci Griffith's sets. Jerry died of cancer a little over a year later, but he told everybody right up to the end about the concert and what a genius John Prine is. Thank you, John, for giving us such a great experience. Jerry was right about the genius thing. I think he was one, too, so he should have known.

So, I picked up the new biography of Richard Nixon at the library, "Nixonland" by Rick Perlstein. I used to worked with a lawyer named Egil "Bud" Krogh, who worked in the Nixon White House (and actually served time for his role in Watergate). He was fond of telling the story of the time Nixon met Elvis in 1970 (here's a link with all the info on that, with links to pictures: http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/elvis/elnix.html#meet Anyway, I wondered if the biography talked about that, so I went to the index to look for "Presley, Elvis." Not there, but what did I find? "Prine, John". On page 446. Here's the quote from the book: "Betsy Ross was taking on a partisan edge, too. Eighteen million Reader's Digest subscribers received detachable flag decals inside the special February 1969 "America in Transition" issue. Thirty-one million more wrote in to request one. The left-wing folksinger John Prine responded, in song, upon "digesting Reader's Digest in the back of a dirty book store," that waving flags didn't "get you into heaven anymore--they're already too [sic] crowded from your dirty little war." Five years after Lyndon Johnson was elected on a platform of consensus, every conceivable cultural expression fell to one or another side of the American ideological divide." I especially like the part where he calls John a "left-wing folksinger." Cool.

I met a woman on an internet support chat group who said that she grew up with John Prine. I asked her if an autographed photo would be possible. My 19 year old son has gone through 14 brain surgeries, and he is a huge Prine fan. He told me when he dies, he wants us to play "Please Don't Bury Me" at his funeral. Well, this kind woman asked J.P. for an autographed photo for my son, and our beloved J.P. sent him one! This is my boys pride and joy! He shows it to everyone! Thank you John. You have no idea of the impact on my son for your kind gesture. The fact that it was a gift from you rather than a purchase makes it even more special to him. Thank you John, from an entire family of Prine fans.

John thanks for your music. Missing Years made me think about my own years and what I should do with them 10 years ago. Here I am again making a big decision in life and your tunes just make it alright. Genuine. Thanks, H

John, I cannot believe you have escaped my attention all these years! My 28 year old son asked for your CD for Christmas, we complied, of course. Right after that, I caught your concert on Austin City Limits, and I was hooked! Well, no sooner, I saw that you are coming to the King Center, right here in Melbourne! In fact, my son has social issues and will never go anywhere, he is indeed coming with us! I am so very excited! My favorite song is Some Humans ain't human, so sadly true. I am a huge music fan, I am so ate up with Delbert McClinton! Obviously, I have passed my musical interest to my son, it is great to have him turn me on to stuff I am not familiar with. Can't wait to see you 9/20! A sincere new fan! Cathy Helm

John I have the 'Speed of the sound of loneliness' video, I was wondering was that whole show filmed. If it was, will it ever be available. aj

I saw you at the Exit Inn in Nashville back in the early 80's. Love your songs and your sound. PLEASE put In Spite Of Ourselves, with Iris Dement on Karaoke so me and my guy can sing it. I have looked everywhere for it and I can't find it anywhere. I sing lots of your songs at my favorite karaoke bar and have introduced lots of young folks to your music. I think all your duets are great but I really like In Spite Of Ourselves

John B.
Aloha from the land of pineapples, first saw you on a segment of Austin City Limits 3 years ago and have enjoyed your music ever since. As I look in the mirror and see the hair getting grayer, the lines a little deeper and the dreams often fading, I turn to your music for a touch of sadness and reflection and perhaps a smile or two. Mahalo for sharing your wonderful talent, I only regret that I hadn't discovered your music earlier. Regards, John B.

Mark Mears - Salt Lake City
I was living in Wyoming early in the 1970's when I came across a review of Prine's first album in Time magazine. I'd been into Dylan for years and had listened to more standard folk for just as long - PP&M, Kingston Trio, etc. In the early 70's I was migrating to country through folk and country rock. Anything acoustic, original, witty, and not messed with too much electronically was and is my choice in music. So on my next trip to Salt Lake after reading the review, I picked up Prine's first album and was hooked. He was the best then and still is. This passion isn't shared by many people I know, but one lifelong friend and I have never missed a Prine concert in our area for over 30 years and have now taken to traveling to LA and Denver and anywhere else that is relatively close to get as much as we can of him. We're getting up there now and figure we shouldn't miss any reasonable chance to enjoy his music live. I don't think a smile ever leaves my face from the time Prine starts singing until he walks off the stage and the same holds for listening to him in my car or home. I think that might be the highest praise I could give someone who really feels like a very old friend: He always makes me smile. Keep it up Johnnie and visit those relatives up north in Ogden often. Oh, and bring your guitar.

John Prine is my all time favorite singer-songwriter. First time I heard him on the radio,- back in the seventies or early eighties, I became a great fan and I tried to buy every available CD in our shops. "The missing years" was a real milestone in my music listening and since then, I waited to see him in concert here in Brussels. The firs time was in 1996 in the "Luna" theatre, it became an unforgettable evening, not only thanks to the amazing performance of JP, but also his brothers in arms were fantastic : Jason Wilber, Dave Jacques and Phil Parlapiano. The next two times he visited Belgium was in the famous "Ancienne Belgique" and of course, I was there by every occasion. Thanks John, for the so many hours you made me feel good and happy. I hope to see you back here in Brussels as soon as possible.

Hi John! My guy and I recently opened an Espresso coffee bar and billiard hall in a small town in northern Minnesota. We recently hosted a David Allan Coe concert on Father's Day. We have a small venue that can hold about 500 people. I am wondering if you will be in our area again and if we could visit about having you do a show at our place? I don't know any other way to get a message to you and stumbled upon this site this morning. I do not want to list my email here, so maybe I can get a reply on this site to take it to the next level. I appreciate your time. Thank you very much! Connie

John, Been listenin' to you since 1980 when I "discovered" you while an Ag major at Iowa State. About a year later I heard "Grandpa was a carpenter" and it hit home....my Grandpa was from Sweden and wore work suits to the lumberyard and sunday suits to church (hearin' aids too). I never realized he wore those suits -- it was just who he was--a craftsman that respected his trade. In 1984 or 85 I went to your concert in Anchorage, Alaska........would be good to go once again. Thanks John, Shane

Dear John, I am writing some poems against the Iraq War. A friend told me I should use some of your lines. I've written the poem, and I quote from "Pretty Good" and "There's a Hole in Daddy's Arm" I;ve also used the line "There was space between Donald and whatever he said." (The poem condemns Rumsfeld). I would like to know whether you would permit me to use these lines if I cite you as the author, because I will be publishing the poem soon I hope. If this is alright with you, would you also identify the poem with the line "There was space . . .?" Would you like a copy of my poem? Thanks very much, Bob

I remember listenin to you when we were both still young,God Bless you Mr Prine, and your Momma and Daddy for givin you life....

Hello, John (and fellow Prine-y's out there)! I am writing this to let you know just how much your music has touched my life, and continues to do so on a daily basis. Your CDs are always in rotation on my stereo, both in the house and vehicle. My significant other has listened to your music for as long as he can remember, but I was just introduced to it about five years ago. Before then, I had always known of your music, but never really 'listened' to it. Knowing how much of a fan he is, I purchased tickets to a show in Pompano Beach, FL (10 hour drive from home!) as a surprise. Since then, I have been hooked! We are now Official Prine-y's, and have traveled to many of your shows in the South. We are lucky enough to reside in Cary, NC now, and have attended your shows at the Booth Amphitheater (essentially in our back yard!) several times. I would like to know if you ever have any sort of a meet & greet at your shows? We would love to have the privilege of meeting and sharing conversation with you. Thank you for all that you contribute (and keep contributing) to the music world. Your music is a bright beacon in a room full of lifeless, soulless music.

We would have keggers in cow pastures in Western New York when I was old enough to drink and young enough not to care that it was a cow pasture. My friends would start Singing "If I Had a Hammer" and the seal would be broken. They would sing your songs until all the beer was gone and the "sleepovers" moved out of the dewy dark pasture into the warm farmhouse kitchen. I saw you live at Vandy one year just because none of them ever saw you play live. You did a much better job singing your songs than they ever could. Thanks for being cooler than Vince Gill.

Michael - New York, NY
We actually met a couple of times.....Gary Fish is a high school buddy and was one of the road managers of my band, Jiva... Check out Billiespyder's 666th Dream on my page - http://myspace.com/michaellanning , 'cause you partially inspired it!!! Hope all is well on your end of the Universe.

Jenn - Wichita, KS
Gosh we love you! We dance and move to your music and lyrics daily. We were just wondering how much an evening of you singing to us, this fall in the wonderful city of Wichita, Kansas might set us back? We're truly looking forward to a response from you. You, continue to make us smile. XOXOXOXOXO's Jenn & Bill aka Ben & Jill ;-)

Hi, You don't know me but I am 41 and I grew up listening to you. My mother loved you, so does all of the real music lovers in Kentucky. My mom passed away in '82 at age 34. I was 15. I still always remember Mom singing to your songs. She loved Illegal Smile and Donald and Lydia. Well as the years grew on, I found out that I had a younger brother that my mother gave away for adoption when I was 3. ....Anyway, I turned him on to your music. He has loved you as much as me for years. When we get drunk we both just belt out singing to your songs!!!!!! LOL He and his wife have been to your shows several times and I think they have met you. You were probably at the KY theatre here in Lexington. I'm so jealous. I just wanted to tell you I LOVE your music. You have been a part of my life since I can remember and always will be. I have 2 of your songs on my MYspace profile.

Nick H, Albuquerque, NM
I'm a huge fan of yours since I was 3. I've also been playing guitar and taking lessons from Pimentel guitar makers(Alb, NM.) since the age of 6, I don't know if you know who Pimentel is but they're a local and world renowned classical guitar makers. They've been making guitars for 50+ years, all family. They also are all made from scratch by hand including inlays, fingerboards etc. I've been to I'd say most of your shows in town. I have Cerebral Palsy in both of my legs and have had number upon number of operations since birth. I just want to thank you for making such beautiful music over the years that helped me get thru it all, (Girls.) It's nice to listen to your songs and know that someone knows/knew what you were going through. And yes I'm someone who sat down and listened to the words of your songs (All of them) and I know them well. Have a good one and Thank You

Karen - Athens GA
You know somethin', John Prine? I have lived 3 lifetimes since I heard you sing for the first time. Oatmeal has never tasted the same, and I have stared many a bowl down since you came along. In the three life times I have lived I have turned every body I know onto you and your incredible way of making life sweeter and a little less crappy. God, I love you. I did see you once in Atlanta. I did not follow you off stage, but I wanted to. Just never was that kind of fan. But now we are both older and wiser (if that is possible) and I can finally make use of this garbage they call the internet and tell you, my favorite songwriter and performer (even over the the Big Bob D.) you took me to a very safe place when I hated the world or when my heart was broken or when I just couldn't get that monkey off my back. I have every thing you have ever sold and BIG ORANGE still cranks out a memory that I can remember as good just because you. Chain of Sorrow, Fish and Whistle, OMG!!! I am so happy to be able to tell you these things. You are amazing, so very amazing. Thank you from the bottom of little ole Southern heart.
