This album grows on you... gives me chills when i hear the chorus break in on "The Hobo Song", just thinking about some of the names within that chorus... This album stands alongside The Haystack Album and Missing Years as three of my favorite 10 albums out there today, by anyone...

Bruised Orange Chain of Sorrow is one of my favorite albums and the title song in particular is probably my all time favorite, although that's a hard choice to make considering all of John Prine's great songs. I taped the song and sent it to a friend of mine in California who had never heard of John Prine. How that happened I don't know. But she was going through a tough time in her life and she said by the end of the song that woeful sax was tearing her apart so bad she had to pull over to the side of the road. She told me, ''I don't want to carry those bruises any more.'' Now that's a damn good song. But that's the end of the story. I flew out to California and we saw John perform in a little tent in San Francisco. It was unbelievable! We were at the railing not 15 feet in front of him. He broke three strings on his guitar he was pounding so hard. He was so good I had tears in my eyes. Now we both love John Prine and each other. That's the end of my, um, review.!

I got this album the minute it came out back in "77. I put it on the turntable and heard "Fish and Whistle" for the first time. Good God! Who else can write anything that good except Prine? "Iron Ore Betty," "Crooked Piece of Time," "Thats The Way That The World Goes Round," "Sabu," all blew me away. I played this LP to death throughout 77 and 78. Another Prine classic.

This is Mr. P's best album. "Fish And Whistle" and "That's The Way That The World Goes 'Round" were two songs that I could not believe one man could write and put on one album...they were just so good. Then at the end of side one we have "Chain Of Sorrow" which just iced it for me. This man had just wrote a song outlining EXACTLY how I felt about life. Wow. Was there ever a funnier song by Mr. Prine than "Sabu..."? Not many! An added bonus of co-writing a song with Phil Spector. Produced by Steve Goodman. A remarkable effort.
