John Prine for me was kinda like starting to drink; aquired taste, other people turned me on to him, and then one day it clicks; and you're hooked. Not to good at describing the taste of fine wines swishing around in my mouth, but John Prine is like the Kurt Vonnegut of music to me; you feel like you're in the inner circle; you get it.

A great John Prine fan passed away, too soon, on December 7. Terry Ricketts, Sedan, KS, had seen JP in concert many times but the highlight was a backstage pass. I think JP was responsible for keeping Terry happy during some sad times, The first memorial will end with Spanish Pipedream. We plan a more exuberant celebration when the weather is warm, and we can eat, drink and be merry in his memory. RIP Terry. and thanks, John.

John, I've been a HUGE fan since the mid 70s. Have seen you numerous times in Portland, OR over the years and have most every album. I have quoted your lines so many times; hardly a day goes by that I don't think of your insights into life/love/philosophy, etc. Lots of "flag decals" still out there! I say, "Hello" to antiques, etc., I've even named my sailboat dinghy "Happy Enchilada" after the story you told on a live album. I'm a big "chicken sailor" who sails/races ocean races but 1/2 inch of water and I think I'm gonna drown. I'm working on my "bucket list" now that I'm in my 60s (and not feeling all that well!). One thing on it is a wish to TAKE YOU TO LUNCH/DINNER sometime when you have a sec. and are hungry. I would come to you nearly anywhere planes fly, roads go, or I could meet you in the NW next time you're out on "tur"! Please, please allow me to do something small for you, after all you've done for me. I'm not a "stalker", but a recently retired college prof. who's gotten more wisdom from you than nearly anyone, maybe Shakespeare excepted, but he won't answer my invitation. The two of you sail with me regularly, whether you know it or not! I am being VERY sincere, and this would mean a GREAT deal to me! Please consider this. I'm not all that boring........ VERY SINCERELY, Gary 360 687 2048 (collect!)

JP, My childhood vacations were filled with great memories of long car trips and John Prine tapes... I belive my grandparents took me to see you when i was like 7 years old. Years later i found myself in Champaign, IL. 9/5/2003- i walked into will call around 4 o'clock to pick up my ticket and much to my suprise you could here a little sound check, "How Lucky" through about 3 shut/locked doors. I sat on the floor for sometime, the colledge girl working the will call was very polite and didn't mind me hanging around as you warmed up. (i had to run out to the car and get a coca~cola) That was one my best JP experences in 14 shows :) Just wanted to let you know your music is like no others... truley a beautiful thing. What a show and what a night!!! I got tickets for the Ryman next spring. Can't wait!!! Please put Jordan Baker on the backstage list, I'll bring the vodka from Paducha, KY... tee hee Much Love

Alittle younger than most fans, born in 61. Discovered John while working and listening to a radio "album of the week" program. The album was "Fair and Square". Late starter but then I'm not really a big music guy. It takes a lot to call me a fan. Saw John in Providence last week. Took the love of my life with me. She is one strong, hard working woman. She was moved to tears by "Hello In There". She blamed it on menopause, but I know better. She loves my Dad and we got a family history of that stuff. John, I appreciate the depth and groundedness(is that a word?) of your music. I wish you had sung "Broken the Speed Of the Sound of Lonliness" and "Angell From Montgomery" with Iris. That said, it was one of the best shows both my wife and I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

Barb Bodine
Dear John, My father brought your album to me and said your lyrics were better than Dylan's- and I should hear you. It was your first. I am a lyricist and a songwriter, and my daughter is also. Here's what I wanted to say today- First, thank you. A song with thanks for the dignity and music that endures. I'm not lookin for the enemy, just tryin to live in dignity Being the best that I can be, in a land called Liberty... They tell me I'm past 35 too old for dreams, but still alive And All i ask is what I see food on the plate , more dignity Jobs and a place to lay my head Don't want to die, is all he said But they walked on by and he was dead In a hospital room , alone he died... No body noticed and nobody cried He waited paitiently and I guess thats not how to be So I'm askin you and I'm askin me... What can we do for Dignity? We can reach across the borders inside our hearts and minds In the eyes of the hungary find courage and be kind... There's food inside the pantry and a check goes int he mail but when it comes to being human I think we may have failed... I'm a Born Again american Tryin to be Free In a land of life and liberty tryin to live with Dignity

I'm putting my annual Christmas-card music compilation together. I've enjoyed and used the song "Everything is Cool" before. This year it has taken on more meaning as my wife passed from cancer last year. It makes me wonder, what was John's inspiration for writing that song? Thank you for the great music. ~Bruce

I WAS INTRODUCED TO THE MUSIC OF JOHN PRINE JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO AND WAS IMMEDIATELY A FAN. MY SON RECENTLY ASKED ME WHAT I WANTED FOR XMAS AND I E-MAILED HIM A LIST OF EVERY SONG JOHN HAS EVER RECORDED. HOPE HE GETS ME THE ENTIRE COLLECTION!

Lucy Murfreesboro, TN
I have loved the infamous John Prine since the early 80's... I had this boyfriend who loved Prine better than me...I never gave up....learned every word to every song he would pick and grin..we called him Jimmin Jimmy, he was your number #1 fan in and around Nashvile for years. He would show up at all the gigs, I never got to go...unfortunately have never seen you live, I hope to change that this March at the Ryman. I would love to be able to go to the "House" this Dec. You see all my boyfriends have also been there, and I never got to go there either. My latest friend whom loved the Blues in NO just passed away...so I doubt I will have the opportunity to vist NO anytime soon. We did just celebrate his life with a farewell of Prine, he would have loved it! Thanks for all the great memories and advice!

Stephen Jackson
I was at my neighbors place this afternoon jammin. Norm fancies himself a guitar player and I fancy myself. There are a half dozen or so John Prine greats that we don't butcher. Every time I sing or hear one of these songs, my brain is immediately bombarded with all the accompanying memories of all the concerts, late nights, drunken cries and country drives of the last twenty odd years and a couple of normal ones. Thank you John. On an unrelated note, I'll be in NO from the 3-7 of Dec. ( my first vacation in three years. poor me) My buddy calls tonight and tells me Aaron Neville will be singing Christmas Songs at the House on the 6th and would I be into that. I say yes, of course, and then he says "too bad we weren't there for three more days" . I say "why?" He says " Guess who's there three days later" I say "Who?" He says " John Prine" If you haven't dozed off yet and you think you might be in NO a few days early..... wouldn't it be cool if you dropped in to the House and joined Mr. Neville for a couple.

Susan Daniels
Dear John...again, not really! Have seen you in Little Rock, Paducah, Tulsa, and Springfield. All the concerts were great. Last night I dreamed you put Tulsa on your tour list for 2010....was I really just dreaming!!!!!!!Please come back to Tulsa.

Ralph
Hi John Prine and friends, Just thought I would let you know...Lewis and Clark have made a discovery that, I hope, might affect your tour schedule. There is a Northwestern section of the United States and it is quite as safe as the rest of the country. I don't know if that's because the we are more settled out here or because the East is more dangerous now, but we have indoor plumbing and concert halls. I would love to see you out here. Your songs and the way you sing them have enriched my life for years. Thanks...

deb hatfield Dryden, ontario
i have listened to some of the local boys play your tunes for years and i play your cd quite often. we saw you in Thunder Bay, Ont in October and wish to tell you how much we enjoyed the show. my beau had never heard your music, but i knew he love it so i dragged him along. have no fear, he is now converted. keep on preaching john, we love ya.

Connie - Newfane, NY
I was introduced to the wonderful music of John Prine by my Husband. The first time I seen him in concert was at UB college in Buffalo, NY. Have since traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa & just this past weekend to Albany, NY. I am hooked on John Prine's music. He really puts on a GREAT show and loves how he talks to the audience . Not that I mind traveling to see his shows but would really love for him to make a stop in or around Buffalo,NY again. Keep up the great songs - we'll see you again.

In the early '70s in Chicago I was dating Fleming Brown, a banjo picker who taught at the Old Town School of Music. He and I worked at a photography/design studio called Stevens Biondi DiCicco, or the Spaghetti House as it was sometimes known. Fleming and I would go the Earl of Old Town, the Fifth Peg and other venues where John Prine and Steve Goodman would perform for open mike nights. Once in a while Fleming would get up and pick, but mainly Linda and John, Stevie, Fleming and I would just hang out -- lots of times we were the only audience. Kris Kristofferson came in once in a while, but he wasn't famous then. None of them were. Now, 40 years later, John's still out there -- he came to Charleston, SC, for a concert a few years ago and I went to see him. What a thrill to hear those old songs again .... I googled Fleming Brown and found he'd passed away in 1984, but I don't know why. Wish I'd seen him again. But at least John's still with us. That's a very good thing.

Dear John, I will be attending your show at the Wang Center In Boston Friday night, but wanted to make you and your folks aware of a brand new venue about 40 miles west of Boston. It's called the Hanover Theater in Worcester, Ma. and it is a fabulous venue for a legendary artist such as yourself. Worcester would be proud to have you visit. Hope to see you in Worcester someday soon and thanks for all your great music ... it touches my soul.

Grace - Aspen, CO
John- I have been a fan and listened to your music since I was born. It was the music I was raised on and words can't describe how much I thoroughly enjoy it and what it means to me. You were the first show I ever went to. I have seen you live countless times, including your show at the Paramount Theater in Denver when there was a blizzard that shut down the city! My family and I were trapped in the same hotel as you and I have to say this is when I fell in love with Jason Wilbur. I'm writing you begging that you please please please put on another show at Belly Up in Aspen!!! Let me know what you can do:) Take care

John I have been a fokkower of your art since I was about 12 YO. That was in 1972. Your work is timeless and very tasteful. Your work is not readily available here but net purchases make things much easier and we Australians like to find the easy way out. On the other side of the world is another favourite of my and that's RORY MCLEOD. I urge you to have a listen as his style does reflect from you. Try Wat would Jesus do?. A great old friend of mine and I listened to "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" all afternoon yesterday. Every song on the album hit home and even "All The Way WithYou" made us both cry a little. Next week we will get together and listen to "Storm Windows" as "One Red Rose" is one of my favorite songs of all time, (although JP didn't write it, what a great performance!) After hearing "Bruised Orange" over twenty years ago I fell in love with John's music all over again when I heard "Fair and Square" and had to buy every record he ever made. That collection and Jason Wilber's records are now one of my most prized possesions. Thanks John for introducing me to Jason's music and God bless you for being my hero as the greatest songwriter of all time. You have filled my life with the most meaningful songs I have ever laid ears on. Oh yeah, Happy Birthday, 63 years young. Frank

I attended my first John Prine concert in 1976 at the Carlton West in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I think it was '76 as my memory is a little hazy from that long ago. I have personally lived many of the songs you write about and it still makes me cry. You manage to hit everything about life right on the head! I've played guitar for 39 years but still wish I could write lyrics like you. Please don't ever stop writing. You think like I do. Someday the things you've wrote about will sink in to the idiots in our society. We finally have medical marijuana for those of us who like to relax and enjoy life and you will see me tonight with an illegal smile but nowadays it does cost a lot! Happy Birthday John!!!! You have made my life more meaningful than you could ever possibly imagine and I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart. jpoole6670@charter.net

Hey John, We met in Tucson, Arizona back in the 1980's when you performed at the U of A where I was a student and a director for ASUA concerts. I gave you a horsehead cane given to me by since departed grandmother. I didn't realize that you were a fellow Libra so my belated birthday wishes to you. That was a killer show with Steve Goodman performing first. I had the oppurtunity to hang out with both of you before and after the show and it is an evening I will never forget.I know you miss Steve as I do. I think of you both often and today I found out there is some poor SOB with my exacy name in PA and he's an insurance saleman and it made me think of Illegal Smile. All the best buddy, Jeff Koman

Been a fan since the 70's and my favorite song is "Hello In There",last month my wife's Grandfather was in hospice care and we would take the guitar to play him some songs, once and awhile I would sneak into the dining room and play for the residents, even had some sing a longs which was great and a wonderful feeling, doesn't take much to make people smile. The day before he passed I played and sang "hello in there" for him,he was slipping away and don't know if he heard it or not but the words had even more meaning and I thought of the others who lived there,God Bless them all and thank you John for such a beautiful song.

M JOHNSON
I wanted to let you know, that I really enjoyed your concert in Thunder Bay, Ontario last night. I had never heard of you before Sunday when I was offered a chance to go to your concert. You have a really great voice and you can play some too. I was telling my friends about the concert and how I thought you were a cross between Leonard Cohen and Johnnie Cash...both whom I really admire. Take care, and keep on keeping on! :O) MJ

Lilly Tropea and Alan Johnson and their daughters Lydia, Aden and Rachel
Dear John Just wanted to send this letter to you in advance of your concert tonight in Thunder Bay. We're so disappointed we didn't get into the front row this time around- we were at our cottage when the tickets came on sale so we'll be up in the Loge seats - me and the girls anyway. AJ, Mom and Dad will be back in row 13! Last time you were in Thunder Bay we were all in the front row and you thanked me for "the details". I don't even know where to begin describing the impact your music has had in our lives. We named one of our daughters after one of our favourite songs "Donald and Lydia" after all! There isn't a song that we don't know the words to (kids included!) and your music really has been the soundtrack of our marriage. We are so excited to come to the concert tonight in Thunder Bay - it'll be the 4th time we've seen you in concert in 7 years- not sure if our daughter Lydia will be able make it tonight- she's a bit under the weather today but I hope she'll rally round in time. We all wanted to wish you a very happy belated birthday! See you tonight! Regards Lilly Tropea , AJ, Lydia, Aden and Rachel Johnson

Hi John,I only just discovered your music a couple of years ago,and have loved it ever since, the first song i heard was "In Spite of Ourselves" with Iris, and yes,i LOVE her too!I recently began to play Guitar(at the age of 47) and Sing,me and my mate Andy(WhelannWyatt) have done a few covers of your songs, with Mexican Home probably our best yet,we have put it on Youtube. Its not in your league but we just love your words and music.I had planned to see you next time you were in the UK,with another fan of yours Danny, but sadly Danny died just after his 63rd birthday, a few weeks ago,so now i am even more determined to see you and Iris while i still can.If you do come to the UK i respectfully remind you that people in the far west love you too,not just Londoners and Northerners !So come to CORNWALL please.Failing that i will try to win the Lottery so i can visit one of your shows in the States! We love you John(and Iris)Be healthy, live long and prosper,Mark and Alison, and their mates Andy and Danny xxxx

I introduced my niece to your music when she was about 14. She is now 25. It has been our tradition that when anything in our lives has tried to get the better of us we write a "Dear Abby" verse. They have ranged from the sweet to sad. Bitter to somwhat x-rated but always funny and we're always able to connect with our sense of humor and move on. Thank you John for all your songs and especially Dear Abby.

Christine Lamb Swift Current , Saskatchewan
Hey John, I too have loved your Music for over 30 years. I drove 5 hours to Calgary Oct. 19th to see you and it was one of the high lights of my life. Through the years you have been there, when I drank my first beer, my first love and partying with friends. I now have my kids all singing to good ole John Prine songs. Keep it up and I hope to see in concert again some day.

GREG HOUSTON TX
My oldest brother introduced me to your music in 1978. I have been a fan ever since. John Prine is probably the greatest songwriter ever. It always blew me away how a guy like John could write songs about lives experiences and it seems like the lyrics should have been from someone who should have been so much older than he was. I look forward to seeing him ever time he comes close to Houston. Happy belated b day. I hope you have so many more. My brother claims he should get royalties, from all the people he has introduced to John's music. Thanks John for all the great music and keep it coming.

Just returned from your Oct 20th show in Edmonton. Fantastic !! My wife Denise and her friends have been singing your songs for years. Who knew? From an new old fan .Keep the beat . Loved the show.

Suzanne Newman, Winnipeg, MB
Dear John, On the chance that you might read this note, I'd like to tell you how much you've meant to me and my family for almost 40 years. I've seen you whenever I can, in my hometown of Winnipeg, and elsewhere. Your shows are always wonderful feel-good events; I only wish you'd tour more often. I could use a dose of you pretty much on a monthly basis. The sea of smiles – illegal and otherwise – and vibes of great times you evoke are something pretty special. That feeling stays with me for days and days after your show. Last time you were in town, I waited around like a love-sick teenager after your show, which was fantastic, as always. You were gracious and generous and very open to talking to me and my kids. I however, was somehow struck dumb, uncharacteristically. (I'm a physician and am usually never at a loss for words.) My daughter told you that she and her 3 sibs grew up on your music. Indeed that's true....you were always in our home. That makes three generations of John Prine fans. My 3 year old grandson and his 1 year old sister may be your biggest fans. Sacha's favourite song is Fish and Whistle, which he sings when he's happy or excited, or when he's being introspective and playing by himself, or riding his tricycle, or falling asleep. He doesn't always get the words right, but he's got the right idea. His little sister Mae doesn't have many words at all, but is a great dancer, and absolutely lights up to F and W especially, carrying the tune pretty much perfectly, singing along with her only words (“ma-ma-ma” or “woof”). You have a wonderful gift in your songwriting and storytelling. You mirror our lives back to us. In your songs we all find our commonality. We see ourselves and the whole wide world a little more clearly, or at least more personally. Thank you for that, and for being a part of my life for so many years. So: I'll see you this week, at last!! Lucky me. I won't be in the front row this time - damn those computer ticket sales - but I'll for sure be there, feeling great, singing along, loving every minute, loving you. Thank you for being in this big ol' goofy world, John Prine. The world's a better place (and I know I'm a better person) for it. With love, and gratitude, Suzanne Newman

Bob Crown--Edmonton
Dear John-- this is a "thank you" that's about 30 years late, but here goes. Around the time of Bruised Orange, my friend Charlie Crissman from Caledonia, Michigan was diagnosed with and being treated for aplastic anemia at the Mayo Clinic. We were both big fans of yours and used to perform your songs for other members of The Block & Bridle Club--sort of a 4H for 20-somethings-- at Michigan State University. His family knew it would mean a helluva lot to Charlie if he could speak with you, so contacted your brother Dave who was playing in Grande Rapids. Dave got in touch with you, and you spent about an hour on the phone hour talking with Charlie. He called me up and told me that I wouldn't believe it, but I did because his folks had already let me know. I asked if he could tell me anything you'd discussed and he said that he expressed his opinion that you should have had some dulcimer on that album (Charlie, of course, played dulcimer). Man, thanks a lot John! This meant so much to him, his family, an me. I'm coming to your show tonight in Edmonton.

JohnN, Millarville, AB
My wife and I, and a couple friends just came back from your concert in Calgary. What a fantastic evening it was. You sure liked you were having fun up there and we also really like Sara Watkins as an opener. It was a real treat for us to hear you sing "In Spite of Ourselves" with Sara. Keep on rollin!!

Two things make me smile or laugh out loud regularly: The antics of my dog, and John Prine singing his happier songs.

john you are one of the greatest of all time and definetly one of a kind . i have been to your concerts and will remember them allways. i listen to your music alot, and as of recently have become to know a couple of other people that are also big fans of yours. one of them also turned me on to a few of your cds that i did not have and as allways just great tunes. hope to see you again.. keep up the great work that you do. and a happy belated birthday. you will allways be in my stereo and in my heart. carry on man.

Karin Newman
Dear John! My mother taught me to love your words and your music. My son, 3 & a half loves your music too. His little sister is also a budding fan. (That makes Three Generations!!) We even have a bathtub toy (small plastic tiger) that seems to share your name, which he pronounces John Crine. Sacha has many favorite songs, but his longest standing favorite is Fish and Whistle. He prefers the live version we have and prefers it to be "on repeat". I love hearing (most of) your words in his beautiful high singsong voice. He listens and tries to understand and then he sings his own version whole heartedly. Now you'd think that a tired ol' mama of two littles would get a mite vexed listening to the same thing again and again. I have to say that the live album we listen to NEVER gets old. When I listen to your intro (to Oldest baby in the world) story about Donny Fritz the leaning man from Alabam I listen to every word. And I laugh every time. You are such a gifted songwriter (of the best) I am so honoured to have heard you here in Winnipeg. My mom Suzanne is going to be in your audience next week. My son Sacha would love to be there too, singing along to live Fish and Whistle, but he has a prior bedtime engagement this time round. I have been wanting to tell you this all summer, but here I am. One day when you sing that song again, I wish you could see Sacha and his little sister Mae dancing and rocking with delight to the opening sounds of their favorite song. surely you must know how well-loved and appreciated you are. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though the years. sincerely, Karin

I have seen john a few times. Each one bears remembering. Years ago,he opened for Arlo, and Arlo didn't come out for an encore. You guessed it. John came out and played for quite a while. Great!!!!!!!!!!!! The last time I saw him it was 4 or 5 years ago in Cleveland. I was the "nut" yelling from my seat,"come to Buffalo". I hope I didn't scare John off. My wife promised him a pie about 8 or nine years ago when he did play in Buffalo. Come back to us, john Prine, harie chistna bou reguard. I know I can't spell.

Dear John HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I have been listening t you since 1976 and I live for your next releases :) I'll confess, I've been a Jimmy Buffet fan for as long, BUT - he isn't fit to carry your guitar :) Even Steve Goodman - rest his sweet soul - lives in your shadow. Your hooks are better than Bobby Dylan and you have more soul than Otis Redding. I hope you live to 100 and I hope I live to be 81, so I can hear all the new music :) If you have a chance p- and I know you get ten thousand of these a day - give this gal a listen .. she is worth signing :) Raw and untamed ... she dosn't need any polishing, just a good studio and a mentor like you :) Des http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=372310533&blogId=514610314

Dear John, (this ain't no dear john letter) Happy Birthday and keep having 'em!! At least one of your songs plays in my head daily. When I get home from work I pick up my guitar and sing "Don't bury me" for my 2 dogs (they think I sing good) I think you are the best song writer that ever lived... even better than Woody... even better than Hank... you're songs are my favorites...Hey, thanks. See you in Louisville! garyharmon@insightbb.com

Happy belated birthday John I hope it was a good one. I'm sorry to say I didn"t get to one of your concerts this year. I guess that means that I'll just have to got to 2 or 3 of them next year. I sure did miss the experiance of seeing you live on stage doing what you do best. You take care of yourself. All my love.

I've been a fan of yours since my two older brothers brought home your first album in the mid 70's. And i have never looked back. Went to my first three JP concerts last year here in NE and am going again in Northhampton, Ma in Dec. Can't Wait! Long Live John Prine

This past April I and my newlywed wife attented your Sacramento concert.WE ARE 57 & 56 respectively and it was our first date. She is an activist in the fight against homelessness and works with Sister Libby and Loaves & Fishes as featured last spring on Oprah. Anyway I have been asked to write about the homeless experience and have done so in my homeade independent cd , "Gotta" Stand Up!" It took me my whole life until now to put out a music product. That's a testament to the love of a good woman! Anyway on said cd of mine is a number called "John Prine Song"A tribute to you, John Prine. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !! Glenn & Tracie Bailey

Happy Birthday to one of the bet songwriters ever. These songs (especially in the times we are in now), keep life real. They are timeless and keep me singing and laughing in my car or at home, but especially on my guitar. I've been singing Angel From Montgomery for 20 years and it still chokes me up at times. The Flag Decal song will always make me laugh...I play and try to teach the songs to my brother who plays mandolin...John makes the songs though. He is way more than the songs. No one can do his songs like him. Always. Much Love Happy Birthday.

Im from Paducah Ky, and lost in a big city. But I came across Bruised Orange in a Chicago last week while running through some viynl. So Im playing guitar today and my one year old son hands me this record from the record cabinet. So I put it on and got to readin the liner notes. While I should mention the great Steve Goodman on there, but Prine thanks Cowboy Jack for the Summer of 77, So I start wonderin how old John Prine was in 1977. After goodling the subject matter I found out that he just turned 63 two days ago. Happy Bday John Prine and thanks for the laughs. Wes Kaintuck

John, first of all...Happy Birthday to a true icon! I have listened to, played (guitar) and sang your songs for years. However, it has been just recently that I have become a JP zealot. A day does not go by where I'm not listening to you...sometimes with a lump in my throat...sometimes laughing out loud. I'm a 58 year old guy who has run a cancer research hospital for years and music has been my balance. I'm trying like hell to get up to Boston for your November show...I cannot think of a better way to start the holiday season! Thanks for adding color to a big ol' goofy world. Dennis Smith

Happy birthday, John.We love your great music. All the best.

I have seen you in concert more times than I can remember - I think my favourite was the tour you did with Arlo Guthrie. Once again I have tickets for your Edmonton gig on October 20th and I am looking forward to it very much. Just a heads-up so you can perhaps include some appropriate songs on your program - were you aware that George Bush is also in Edmonton that night? Please don't think badly of us as a city just because someone invited him to speak here!

Happy birthday John. I hope your birthday is as wonderful as you are! The first time I saw you was in the 70's in Chicago. I was 17 years old.You were doing your Bruised Orange Tour, and I brought you an orange up on stage and you kissed me! I've seen you in Chicago many times. Once with the Cowboy Junkies and you and Margo Timmons did If you were a woman and I was a man. It was great. I've seen you in North Carolina a couple of times and two years ago in Belfast Northern Ireland. Your songs have made me smile many times over the years. You just keep getting better as time goes on. Lynne ps I loved you in Daddy and Them.

So, I was sitting here watching this movie Juno, and at the end of it comes on this song "part time lover and a full time friend" And I think that sounds an a lot like JP's "In spite fo ourselves" so I get on the net to compare the two and end up here finding out its John's Birthday. Spookie Well Happy Birthday John Thanks for all the great tunes.

Jimi
My brothers Greg and Mark had your first album right after it came out. "Sam Stone" and all the other songs on that album are great and unforgettable. I've seen you live about 4 or 5 times, the first time was at The Cellar Door in Georgetown. Another time I saw you was at an outdoor festival where you were wearing a sailor suit. My brother Larry and I play your songs on guitar often. Thanks for all the years of music.

Dear John: I want to wish you a very happy Birthday. When I heard "eat a lot of peaches" I was hooked and have loved your music ever since. I have hoped and wished that you'd be touring in my area for years and next Saturday in Victoria, then Monday in Calgary my dreams will come true. Thank you for bringing so much happiness into my life.

Happy Birthday John! Same day as my sister's! I can't thank you enough for the great music all these years. A co-worker gave me "Sweet Revenge" in 1985 and I've been hooked ever since. My oldest son is now a big fan and bought me tickets to see you at Carnagie Hall, which was such a great concert and we all sang Happy Birthday to Iris. One of the best times of my life. Thanks Again, Happy Birthday...You are truly one of the best! Chip

Please come back soon...plenty of new White Castles have opened and the grease is just getting ripe!!!!!! Funny, I've been doing the Black clothes look to hide a few extra pounds the last few years. This year, still Johnny Cash comments...but in NYC...three people, not together, told me I looked like John Prine. Pretty cool.

Happy Birthday John! I’ve seen you in different concert venues at least a dozen times. From Chicagofest with Steve Goodman to a whole in the wall bar in Colorado Springs with JD Souther in the mid 1980’s. I was fortunate enough to be first in line and grabbed a table in front of the stage at that show in Colorado. As I was singing along with you during your performance, you seemed to forget your words to the song” Your Flag Decals Won’t get you into Heaven…. And while strumming your guitar you leaned forward for the next line from me….and I said “What did the bank teller say to you?” You lifted head and smiled and said to the audience…”This guy won’t tell me the words to my own song.” Everyone laughed and you finished the song with every word. After the song you shook my hand... It was an honor.. I’ll have a beer for you and Steve Goodman on the 10th. Bless You.

I'm sitting here in Afghanistan (Oct 09), and my John Prine collection is making it better. Thanks, I both laugh and feel when I'm listening to these songs. Poignant, wry, and the equivalent of a virtual beer or two. Thanks also for the concert in Cheyenne about 10 years ago.

John will probably remember us: I toddled back stage with my husband (both of us have Cerebral Palsy), me with a bad foot and husband on Canadian arm crutches. We went to see Nanci Griffiths, who bailed after the concert, and got to see John. It was a true blessing we did. (No offense to Nanci). After a true maze of stairs we saw him in 1993, among fans and those who didn't know him other than the star of the show. We gave him nothing to sign. I wanted to chat about his song "Paradise". I had written a graduate paper on the problems of the Apalachian population and town removal, well John gave the best poem that could ever be on the subject...I told him about it and we all jawed for about 20 minutes about the issue at hand. Short 20 minutes has impacted my life to this day. His sincereness, humbleness, and willing to spend time with us has made us fans for life. I cried when I heard about his cancer and concern for the ole guy who still lights up our day when we hear: "Some Human's Ain't Human" around the house! I hope to see him again some day and give him a wonderful hug for the joy he has brought into our lives. Happy Birthday John, from us stumbling fools in Columbus, OH. We miss you! Mary and Raymond.

I first got turned on to John's music in Boise, Idaho, back in the days that Ronnie Raygun was running for President. His music then, as it is now, touched my soul to it's core. Then, in '80 or '81, I saw John in concert at the Orpheum is Minneapolis, MN. It was one of the finest concerts imaginable! I'm 49 now, and both my 6 year old daughter and 3 year old son know John's music. I truly feel blessed by John's gift. And I'm eternally thankful to have John in my life... :-)

I grew up listening to John Prine in the 70's and played him so much I'm sure my old neighbors still hate the both of us. I honestly don't believe I ever helped him secure a fan base. It was funny how I could really see these people in his songs. They lived either up the street or around the corner between the bar and the pawnshop. In 2003 or so, John came to town and I took my wife to be to see him at the State Theater in Cleveland. After the show I told her that I was so happy she came to see him. At that point I don't think she was too sure she still wanted to marry me but she did. John is an icon, a story teller who sings about life. I just thank God it isn't my life but my old neighbors. Happy Birthday, John

Happy BD JP!! I have been a Prine fan since the early 80's but my wife became a big fan after we had a premature child at 28 weeks and only 1 pound 2 ounces. She hear the song "Big Fat Love" and was forever hooked. Our little one is now 10 years old and doing fine. We had a great time at the show in Toronto in August.

Happy Birthday, John Prine, and many more! Thank you for years of great music. We are so looking forward to seeing you and Iris Dement for the first time this December in Providence. Ironically, the tickets are a birthday gift, too. Glad to see you are playing more often in these here parts. Don't forget the Zeiterion Theatre in historic New Bedford, Ma. We would love to see you there. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you in Providence. Again, Happy Birthday!!

My mom had leukemia and died a couple of years after being diagnosed. I would sit with her and sing her John Prine songs and bring my CDs to let her listen to him. She finally liked someone I liked!!! I wrote a several songs that are exactly the kind of music he writes and I would also sing these to her. I told her that before she died I would get him to sing one of my songs. The time was so hectic that I never fulfilled that promise to her. Now my Dad is getting up there (he's 88) and I would just like the opportunity for him to hear my mom's favorite song I used to sing to her and just maybe it might be a song worthwhile to him. It would also be a dream come true for me. I've always wanted to hear my music performed and after I first heard John Prine, I always hoped one day I'd get the chance to have him hear my music. Well, that's my story. Can anyone help me to make my dream come true? Thanks. Glenda Rhees

My first John Prine Album was "Bruised Orange" and I have no idea where I got it. It was one of three albums I had on cassette tape that I had to listen to during my first divorce in 1975. I had never heard John before but there was something simple about it that made it easy for me to listen to. I loved the title song and it made me feel better every time I listened to it. It was humorous and sad at the same time. Just what I needed. Last year I found "Fair and Square" in my sister's car I was borrowing. I fell in love with it. I went out and bought every album I could find by him after that and "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" became my favorite, also making me a fan of Jason Wilber. I talk about his songs all the time to my fellow musicians and they don't have a clue since JP is not mainstream or have a song on the radio. John, you have saved my sanity more than once and I want to thank God that you were born and wish you a happy birthday! So happy birthday and I hope the world goes round for you many more years. I'll have a happy enchilada on the 10th and cry a few ice cubes of joy the day they said "It's a boy" and the Prine's named him John. My sister has weird tastes in music which was lucky for me. I'm 55 now and grateful to have music that makes sense to me to listen to again. I'll never forget that it's Sunday again either thanks to you and my sister. "Mulie"

I have seen John numerous times since the mid 70's and his shows have gotten better each time. I wish him the best on his birthday and look forward to more concerts in the coming years. I love you man!

Renee in KC
I have to say, when it comes to going to concerts I usually stay home. That is unless John Prine is in town! I have seen John more than any other performers. I own all his records and recently when my sister was having a birthday, I treated her to his recent KC concert. She had never heard of him until then but immediately became a fan too. When I told my friend in Louisiana I went to see him again, she gasped in envy and said she wishes she had lived in KC to be able to go too. We have such great memories of his songs, all the way back to the 70's and Angel from Montgomery is the best. I must admit though I love "Happy Enchilida" song...for those who own his music you will know what I mean. Thank you John and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You will always have a special place in my heart.

Rose are red Violets are blue I am laughing like hell Because I am younger than you! And when the roses have faded And we all become somewhat outdated Your music will shine As will you on your birthday, Mr. Prine.

JOHN, I surprised my husband with a trip to California just to see you in concert at Mountain Winery for his 40th birthday! He said it was hands down the best concert he's ever been too - and his best birthday present ever. Thanks for signing so great, loved seeing you! And we wish you a happy birthday too!

A nice newspaper column about John Prine. http://www.reflector.com/opinion/she-has-her-mothers-eyes-and-an-ear-for-daddys-music-873600.html

John, Cape Cod, MA
My wife, son and I have been fans for over twenty years. My son grew up listening to John Prine while riding in his car seat. This summer we took a road trip from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to New Brunswick, Canada to see John perform at Mount Allison university in the town of Sackville. As expected, the show was terrific. At 63 years young, the guy still has it all. As satisfying as it was for me, my son, who is 18, was thrilled to be in the audience. The next day we left our motel around noon. We had stopped at a breakfast place to eat before hitting the road when I realized that I could not find my sunglasses. Assuming that I had left them in the motel room, we drove back to check. As I was searching the room, my wife found the sunglasses in the car. She came into the motel to tell me when she saw this guy coming down the stairs lugging a duffel bag. I was a step or two behind him. As the guy looked up toward her she cried, "Oh my goodness, you're John Prine! " The guy just smiled and says, " Yes I am. " I then offered my hand which he shook without hesitating. I told him that we had come up to Canada from Massachusetts and he just started small talking with us about how his bass player had relatives in the Cape Cod area. I then asked him if I could please bring my son in to meet him. John had every right to say no or to tell me that enough was enough but he just said, " sure. " I raced out to the car and told my son that John Prine was waiting for him in the lobby! In addition to giving my son a big handshake and hello, John allowed me to take a photo of them standing together. It was a great moment for my son.....and for me! Thank you again Mr Prine!

An unlikely fan-Juneau
I grew up listening to John Prine, not that I knew who he was. My dad used to blast his music when he was in just the right mood. I grew up, didn't really ever listen to any Prine on my own-my parents had vinyl back then. Anyway, as it happens I ended up at his concert in Juneau last summer with my dad, who is dying of Cancer. One of the most amazing and memorable experiences I have ever shared with my dad--brought back great memories of childhood. Now I listen to John Prine at least twice a week, and my girls love his music too. Thank you, John. Memories of my father will live on in your music forever.

I have loved you John my whole life and can"t wait to see you and if lucky enough shake your hand and show you the tattoo your lyrics inspired "sweet songs never last too long on Broken Radios". I'll be the guy with the BLUE braided beard :)

I'm still a huge fan and last year form Christmas my oldest brother give me a CD case the contained every cd you ever make and it never leaves my car! The importance of my story is now I have a 9 yr old daughter who is taking guitar lessons and sings along to your songs with me I find that very special and thank you for your impact you've made with your songs...We love your voice!!! Your biggest fan from Ontario!! Ashley Van Hee ............................Ps. are you coming here soon?

I first saw John Prine's name on a Kris Kristofferson album back in the 70's. Never thought a thing about it. Perhaps 15 years later during a picking-and-grinning session, some guy said, "Have you ever heard John Prine?" None of the rest of us had heard of him; he put a cassette tape on to play, and we all ignored it. So about four years ago, since I like folk music, I chose to listen to the AOL radio folk channel. I heard John and Iris singing "In Spite of Ourselves". I was hooked. I'm 65 years old, and I listen to John's music often. Sometimes I wonder what on earth he's talking about, but I keep listening. My daughter, bless her heart, took me to hear him in Kansas City a few days ago. It's one of the highlights of my life. But I'd still like to know what in Sam Hill he's talking about in some of those songs. I love me some John Prine.

Charlotte Prine Joesten
You certainly look like a Prine. You remind me of my father and grandfather. Ive been looking through my family history and sure wish I could speak with you sometime. I've been trying to find out my great great grandfathers parents. Calvin Margarite Prine. I live in Springfield, Mo. Oh well, its worth the try, I would have e-mailed you, but no address. Charlotte.

Jill Cooper Atlanta
In 1976 I went to a place near Philadelphia and John Prine played an outdoor concert. I was 16. the next day I bought my first of many guitars to come in my life. I learned to play Angels From Montgomery right away. The next summer i worked in Atco, NJ at Atco (or Atlantic) Records packing albums into the sleeves and record jackets. I packed Buffalo Springfield and John Prine! We printed the vinyl there, tested them for quality and then packed them in the white paper sleeve and outside cardboard jacket. They were then shrink wrapped and placed on palettes of 2500 records. A truck came to take the palettes every day for distribution. I packed two different Prine albums that year and got them for $1.00 each at the factory. One night I packed 2,750 of his album Pi me Prine. After that summer I saw John Prine in concert about 30 more times throughout my life at the MoonShadow, Atlanta, Chastain Park, Cobb Energy Center, Columbia SC, Boston, NY, and Variety Playhouse, and twice on this past tour of Fair and Square and other songs. I have written my own songs now and own a Louden guitar that I know he (JP) would love. If it were not for JP I would not be a musician and I wouldn't have grown to love music so deeply. I play Hello In there and Souvenirs whenever I sit on my porch alone on quiet nights. Thanks John so much! To all - I love your stories!

Cristy - Tyler, TX
correction - i love that my are NOT asking for Barney! addition - i love that John Prine is out there so my kids can know great songs/songwriters!

Cristy - Tyler, TX
We have 3 kids 3 years and under - we don't so much get into traditional kid songs, we're listening to Tom Petty now. That being said, we listen to John Prine lots & lots. The kids all have their favorite songs and ask for them by names that make sense to them. This is the one worth writing about...yesterday we were all in the car listening to Reckless Kelly and our 3 year old girl said, "i want crazy balloon" which translates "Crazy as a Loon" from 2005's "Fair & Square" album. I love that my kids are asking for Barney!!

Joe D - MO
my name is joe duey, i grew up in marceline missouri. i grew up with my family listening to your music, and my mother used to sing your songs to me when i went to bed. i just wanted to let ya know that i love you music and it has been an amazing help for me...during the hard times...the combination of story telling like (sam stone) to the humor of (dear abby and please don't bury me) or the power of songs like hello in there, helped me through. Your music has also empowered me to be a vocalist myself...my dream would be to see you live and possibly sing one of these amazing songs I've mentioned with you...i wouldn't care if it was in a truck stop parking lot...thank you for everything...i am going to attempt to scrape together the money to see ya 9-12-09 in kansas city at the midland theater....maybe i might see ya then...thank you for everything...joe

Dear John, I've been a huge fan for a very long time and have introduced tons of people to your music. Of course, the mis-heard lyric "Happy Enchilada" is something I always sing (and had my girlfriend believing the lines for a while). We had a mexican themed night at a local bar and named the drink of the evening "the happy enchilada". As well, the steps to my backdoor at the lake read "Be a Happy", on the top step, and then "Enchilada". This has gone a long way in my circle of friends. We will be at your concert in Winnipeg (Oct'09) - would love an autograph on my favorite (John Prine) T-shirt. MY NAME IS CHEEMER!!

After many, many years of being a fan, I have finally seen the great John Prine live (in St. John's, Newfoundland). THE GREATEST CONCERT EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! Your way with words and melody reaches in and grabs the soul. You sing with such honesty and insight - no sugar coating. My father, who passed almost fourteen years ago, was a big fan and I felt him there at the concert with me. I felt that connection with him through the music - especially live. It was very powerful. Without knowing it, of course, you wrote a song about my father - Fish and Whistle. He loved to fish and whistled all the time, and like yourself, looked at the world with humor and compassion. Thank you John for sharing your gifts with us and making the world a better place. God bless you and yours.

Bob, Grandfalls-Windsor NL, Canada.
I seen Mr Prine in Cornerbrook NL, and the show was amazing. It was everything i had expected it to be and more. Being a fan for more than 30 years and listening to his music just about every day, i was very fortunate to get a chance to meet him. Not only did he talk to me but i also got an autograph. i guess the best thing beside the show was that Mr Prine autographed my guitar. Mr Prine, you made my dream come true, and i thank you very much,GOD BLESS YOU.

Kim
Well here goes my one-sided, thirty year love affair with John Prine... one of my earliest memories of Prine was in the early 80's ... I didn't have anyone to go with so I got in my school bus.. yes, my school bus, and drove down to Ontario Place. The concert was awesome...Back then, the stage was circular and rotated and as John spun round and round the forum, I was blown away by his rugged good looks. However, even more intriguing were the lyrics that flowed from those perfectly shaped lips under his unkempt mustache. I remember thinking if I could just meet him, I'd say something really witty and he would invite me for a drink; so I waited for the crowd to leave . I sat patiently as hundreds of people filtered out through the same doors that allowed them in. Next thing I knew I was alone, confident of nothing... doors opened and out came John Prine. He looked my way and what did I do....?? I looked up to the sky, then over to my left, I had a good look at my shoes and when I saw him turn around and walk away...my new found voice squeaked... "NO". Who knows what I would have said.. maybe it's best I didn't say anything.. I guess the silence we shared was perfect enough.

John I've followed you all my life . I've played your tunes since your first album hit the shelf. you've had a great following here in cumberland county and I've adopted your tune Muhlenberg county as such to reflect the devastation left by scott paper company. thanks . they call me MR. JOHN PRINE at the festivals i play at its very humbling , i guess i do sound alot like you. Like they say theres nothing like the real thing. the love of my life and i parted several years ago and in an effort to win me back she made up a tale about writing you and receiving a letter from you to me telling me to give her another chance. Even though it wasn't true i wish i had. she always knew the way to my heart. I had the pleasure to meet Steve goodman at one of your concerts years ago in edmonton AB just before he passed, he asked lots of interesting questions about Nova Scotia , said he only made it as far as new brunswick . mostly about our trees plants and tides . I got a great autograph on a NS drivers licence still have it. I still play mostly your tunes John but my tickers failin. I'm goin to Sackville NB monday to try to meet you and get your autograph on my old guitar hope i see you this time. I've got a couple nice old NS licence plates for your bus. all the best John you are my idol...... thanks...jack cameron

I have been a Prine fan for over 30 years. I have seen John twice in concert, once in Vancouver in the 70's where he came out on stage in front of the curtain is a too small shirt and no socks (I thought he must have lost his suitcase in transit) and once about two years ago in Bellingham - both times we had great seats and I rank his concerts as some of the best I have ever seen. I am terribly sad that I can't see John when he comes to Victoria this Oct. as it is sold out - we were traveling when the presales were available and when we got home all the tickets were gone. PLEASEEE can you move to a bigger venue in Victoria ? Love you John Carla

I just wanted to thank you for the song "Sam Stone". My dad was in the Marine Corps in 1968, and among other injuries, he was blasted with shrapnel in his knee in Vietnam. He was addicted to heroin for 11 years after returning. He is now 60 years old and suffering from hepatitis C and liver failure. He has always closely related to the Sam Stone in your song. I think it means a lot to him to have certain songs to listen to right now, and I sincerely want to thank you for giving this one to him.

I wrote a song a few years ago specially for John Prine, after loving his music forever. It's called "Call Up Your Old Monkeys". Sounds like a crazy song I know. But I'm thinking it's the song that John would like. First line " well you can call up your old monkeys and I'll call up all of mine.... I'm going to see John on August 14th at Massey Hall in Toronto and it'll be about the 7th time I've seen him. I have great floor seats for the first time and I can not wait! Not much of a story but it's mine!

dear john. i've seen you 12 times - and have driven as far as 8 hours to see you. in fact, in minneapolis you invited us in to listen to your sound check. so you're coming to winnipeg on october 23rd (one day before my birthday). i've written a great song about falling out of love and i'd love for you to have a listen. if i drop off a disc at your hotel (i happen to know someone who knows someone who knows which hotel you stay at when in winnipeg) could you give it a listen? i figure i've spent over $3,000 in my life either in tickets and travel and albums. it's the least you could do. cheers, rick loewen

Hey John About eight er so years ago, while hanging at the local pub a buddy of mine he whipped out an old guitar and started to play a few tunes. Mostly yours. I was not familiar with your music at the time but became an instant fan. Last year my father became ill and one day while I was at his house taking care of him, my father overheard Bad Boy while I was playing it on the radio. My father always lived his life to his own tune and identified with the song, as you could see his eyes get wide and his big ears perk up when he asked me about the song and who’s it was. After his passing I played it with the video of his life photos in tribute to my dad as his bad boy photos flashed on the screen. Really choked everyone up. Very Fitting. I think you got a few more fans now. Just wanted to say thanks to you for the music and songs. They mean allot to us as I’m sure you know.http://lafuneral.com/_mgxroot/page_10721.php?id=616841 Forget to add this link in my previous post. If anyone is interested to view the video tribute. second song in. Thanks John Roger Scherer Jr

Not much of a story, but saw you for the first time a couple of years ago in Billings. Just wanted to know when or if you were ever gonna make it back up here again. Loved the show as did my wife, even though we sat in different seats in the first row. My brother who introduced me to your music a long time ago, has never gotten the chance to see you in person and I would love for him to get that chance. Hope to see you in the Big Sky State very soon......

I am in search for the piano accompaniment to the song "I Love You so Much it Hurts". I have listened to many versions by numerous artists of this great song but the piano part in John's rendition is simply beautiful yet simple in this song. Can anyone out there steer me in the right direction?  ** There doesn't seem to be any available online at this time. You may want to try doing a search for pianist blogs, or message boards... or try posting your need on the Prine shrine message board (in the FANS section). I'll bet someone out there has figured out the music, or can figure it out for you.  ~ webmistress of the Prine shrine

I thought that being a John Prine fan and being in communication with the web site was going to land me the best seats at Red Rocks via Music Fans Direct. I started getting concerned, however when I saw really good seats appearing on Craig's list before the concert, and by the rules of the game, I was not going to know my seat location until a few hours before the concert. The web site assured me that we were going to get the best seats. I don't call the end of the row in front of the speakers the best seats, which is what we got. Next time, it's the gen pop, ticketmaster route for me. For $5 more I get to choose my seats.

Hi John :) Being the Daughter, Granddaughter, Sister, Niece, Cousin, (ex-wife, D-I-Law.S-I-Law,)etc... of a huge PROUD Family of MUHLENBERG COUNTY Coal Miners (before & after ) Mr. Peabody, I have a story to share with you :) My Husband and I have recently gotten into Karaoke with some friends. (that is the FUNNY PART) lol Well, being the ever faithful Muhlenberg Countians, (I was raised about 5 miles from "PARADISE", we immediately thought of trying our vocal cords out on our fav song :) :) So, we ordered it !! Oh John, I almost cried, no, not at my Husband's rendition of your singing, but at the soundtrack they had BUTCHERED your "PARADISE". Now, mind you, being a fan of yours, I was able to tell that most of the other tracks sounded reasonably o.k. but Paradise was so horrible. Now, I guess my dream to sing it at karaoke has died.... Oh well, no one sings it like you anyway :)

It's amazing how you continue to be "discovered". I often play your music and eventually someone will finally say "Who is that" like you are some big secret. Of course they become the newest member of the Prine fan club once I tell them. I took up the guitar for the most part to play and sing your songs for myself. I try and catch you whenever you come back "home" to Chicago or Maywood. You are truly one of the Great American songwriters bar none. Thanks John.

I met the most amazing person 8 months ago and he was a avid guitar player. He played me the song (Make me an Angel). He suddenly passed away about two weeks ago. my heart is broken But the moral of this story is that this song helps me get through the day everyday thank you for such a beautiful song...
