JOHN PRINE SING ALONG - Fri Dec 8, 2006
By: Slim Lively

We had a great time.... read the full blog here: It's too bad that this event only takes place once a year. It's a great form for expressive outlet and perhaps nobody's music could come across as well as John Prine, who obviously cannot be defined as the perfect vocalist, so it makes it easier on the rest of us who definitely are not singers to chant along. When the night is over, however, you certainly have a good feeling no matter how well you can sing. Because everybody has had a good time and experienced a night of sharing an artist whom they love enough that most other things going in the world just don't matter. For a few hours at least.<snip>

12 July 2006 - Kinvara Ireland Greens Hotel
By: Neil
Just saw John play in local pub with local musos and singers. We had not heard of John before but a friend took us along and we were knocked over by his talent and the rapport he showed with local musos, singers and crowd. The venue was a small irish pub in the country and it was packed to the rafters. John shared a corner with the other musicians playing his own stuff and joining in with the others. He was unassuming and obviously enjoying himself as was the packed pub. You could have heard a pin drop when anyone was performing as was the respect from the crowd. We are definite John Prine fans now and have the pleasure in front of us in disccovering his back catalogue

Religion is not a valid reason for groups to kill each other
By: THE REV. R. CLAY HALL
  Message of the Week
  Jesus Don't like Killin'
I am a 50-something pastor who is retired from the United States Army. I dress conservatively and have been married to the same woman for more than 25 years. For the most, part I have always tried to keep my political views out of the pulpit. I believe that the scripture is for all, and that it is neither a Republican primer nor a Democratic manifesto.
With that said, some may find it surprising to know that my favorite songwriter is John Prine. Prine is an old-time, politically aware, folk singer with an edge. I love Prine's songs because they are simple and truthful. (They are a little depressing, but then, so are most folk songs.) They make me think.
I love songs like "Sam Stone," which is about a veteran brought down by a drug problem, and "Hello in There," which is about how the aged are abandoned by our society. My favorite song is perhaps the one most out of character for someone like me. It is called "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore."
My favorite line from the song is, "Jesus don't like killin' no matter what the reason's for." Simple and truthful. ------ read more:

Congratulations to John Prine & Oh Boy Records - For the Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy
in the 48th Annual Grammy Awards

John Prine wins the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk AlbumJohn Prine wins the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk AlbumGrammy Quotes: "I didn't expect to be up here. I showed up because I got nominated. All the other nominees are sitting at home in my record collection.'' John Prine

from the Hollywood Reporter - With competition like Bruce Springsteen, folk artist John Prine figured he should be satisfied with simply being nominated. So it was with genuine surprise that Prine picked up the Grammy for best contemporary folk album for "Fair & Square."
"I didn't exactly write a speech," said Prine, who won his first Grammy 15 years ago. "I just thought that all of the nominees were really strong -- everybody had great records." Prine added that though it has been eight years since he beat cancer, he is not sure it was something that influenced his songwriting. "Something really big like that takes a long time to come through in the music. ... Maybe someday it will," he said.

From Billboard:
Much to his surprise, John Prine snared the award for best contemporary folk album for his first album in 10 years, the Oh Boy release "Fair & Square." "It's a tough category," he admitted. "It wasn't so surprising beating Springsteen as it was beating [parent company of Springsteen's label] Sony. Oh Boy is just a small office with three people." The album is Prine's first since successfully undergoing treatment for throat cancer. He says that experience hasn't influenced his music ... yet. "Something really big [like that] takes a long time to come through in the music, you know," he offered. "Someday it will."

(John Prine Official Website) - John Prine's latest release, Fair & Square, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Feb. 8. Fair & Square is his first studio recording in nine years and was released on his very own Oh Boy record label.
The Grammy win caps a remarkable year for Prine-one in which he won Artist of the Year honors at the 4th Annual Americana Music Honors and Awards, which took place in Nashville in September. Prior to that he received an invitation to read and perform at the Library of Congress from Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser.
Prine also saw Fair & Square, which features guest vocals from fellow Grammy winner and bluegrass star Alison Krauss and Americana singer Mindy Smith, ring up the best first week sales of his career. It landed at No. 2 on Billboard's Indie chart and No. 55 on the all genre Top 200 chart.
This is Prine's second Grammy-he took home a previous Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy back in 1991 for his album The Missing Years. ..........

GRAMMY'S - SOUNDS LIKE A CELEBRATION
Date: FEB 8, 2006 - artlicle poste Feb 5, 2006
By: Jack W. Hill
BEST CONTEMPORARY FOLK ALBUM Chavez Ravine, Ry Cooder, Nonesuch - The Outsider, Rodney Crowell, Columbia - Why Should the Fire Die ?, Nickel Creek, Sugar Hill - Fair & Square, John Prine, Oh Boy - Devils & Dust, Bruce Springsteen, Columbia - Who will win : Other than young trio Nickel Creek, you could call this the old white guys’ category. You’d think there might be some old white gals who merit attention, but apparently not. There might even be some nonwhite men and women, like Taj Mahal and Joan Armatrading, who could qualify, but not in years when they don’t release anything. Crowell, Prine and Springsteen’s albums contained political content (read : criticism of the Bush regime), so that could perhaps doom their chances. Cooder will probably win because he has a hipster rep, what with having hung out with Cuban musicians in recent years. Who should win : Unlike such throwaway categories as the Best New Artist, this category contains quality nominees, all of whom are worthy of recognition. It would be nice if Prine was honored for his years of thoughtful and humorous songs, especially since his nominated CD comes after his successful battle against throat cancer. --------- whole article at the Arkansas Democrat Gazette - http://www.nwanews.com/adg/Style/144905/

Grammy's PREDICTION
By: Salt Lake Tribune - Dan Nailen
Best Contemporary Folk Album NOMINEES: "Chavez Ravine," Ry Cooder; "The Outsider," Rodney Crowell; "Why Should the Fire Die?" Nickel Creek; "Fair & Square," John Prine; "Devils & Dust," Bruce Springsteen --- THE LOWDOWN: First off, where are the women in this category, besides Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins? No Ani DiFranco, or Eliza Gilkyson, or Lucinda Williams? Hmm. Still, it's a category loaded with great American songwriters, and while Springsteen's fame dwarfs the other nominees', he is no lock thanks to Prine, Cooder and Crowell. --- PREDICTION: Prine, fair and square over the Boss. ---- http://www.sltrib.com/entertainment/ci_3470612

Loewes Vanderbilt Plaza hotel Nashville TN - Nashville Grammy Nominees Bash
Date: Feb 7, 2006
By: Edward Morris
Feb 8, 2006 - Nashville Celebrates Its Grammy Nominees
As the year's first snowfall pelted Nashville's streets, music industry figures gathered at Loews Vanderbilt Plaza hotel Tuesday night (Jan. 17) to extend best wishes to the city's 2006 Grammy nominees. Winners will be announced Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.
Susan Stewart, who heads the Nashville chapter of the Recording Academy -- the organization that confers the awards -- announced that Nashville placed nominees in 34 different categories, well beyond the chapter's usual dominance of the country and gospel divisions.
Well over a dozen nominated acts, songwriters, producers and technicians attended the event, including Keith Urban, who's in the running for best male country vocal performance for "You'll Think of Me"; Marcus Hummon, Jeff Hanna and Bobby Boyd, whose "Bless the Broken Road" is up for both song of the year and best country song; and the Grascals, whose self-titled debut album is contending for best bluegrass album.
Three acts that are vying for the best southern, country or bluegrass gospel album prize were on hand -- the Jordanaires (Southern Meets Soul: An American Gospel Jubilee), the Crabb Family (Live at Brooklyn Tabernacle) and Steve Gatlin (Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers Sing Their Family Gospel Favorites)
Other nominees at the party were Dennis Scott, producer of Songs From the Neighborhood: The Music of Mister Rogers, which is nominated for best musical album for children; John Prine, whose Fair & Square is in the best contemporary folk album category; Walter Ostanek, gunning for best polka album with Time Out for Polka and Waltzes; Béla Fleck and Sam Bush, up for best country instrumental performance with "Who's Your Uncle?"; director George Flanigen IV of Deaton Flanigen, whose "God's Will" video for Martina McBride is nominated for best short form music video; and engineer Chuck Ainlay, whose work on Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms: 20th Anniversary Edition helped put it in consideration for best surround sound album.
Music for the party was provided by the Brian "Breeze" Cayolle jazz trio from New Orleans. ............ read it here
