I GET LETTERS aka MY PRINE STORY 2000
UPDATED 07/03/02

Memories that can't be boughten

November-December 2000

Good day eh... One million years from now some archeologists are digging around present day Nashville and they uncover a shiny disk in a plastic case. They insert it into their analyzer and out come the words..... "you may see tonight......."  after it was all over they all looked at each other and said "I wonder what that meant ?" One of the scientists said "aw heck we'll figure it out later, let's go smoke a joint"  ~ old hippie "and talking with our minds"

Two Chicago Tribune columnists are going to sing his (and Steve Goodman's) song, "The 20th Century is Almost Over" at a couple of holiday concerts at the Old Town School of Folk Music, in December. They are also looking for people to send in additional lyrics to "update" the verses.  ~ diane

John was a good friend of an artist named Micheal Jordan who also did the Chicago scene in the eighties. Mike was a friend of mine and I followed his career from his first album Through the Window. In later years when Mike and I played music together he told me that when the next time John came to town he'd take us to meet him and pick guitar. Well sadly Mike got killed in an auto accident in 92,well I saw John at the services and never thought of it. But when John came to St Louis years later, I sent a message back to John telling him about my friend ship w/ Mike. I wanted to have him dedicate a song for Mike. Well John did one better, He invited my husband and I back stage and we got three pictures w/ John. So totally Cool!! He was a down to earth guy. I never got to sing w/ him, but thats Ok,It was a thrill of a lifetime!!!!!!!. Not many people like that any more. ~, Diana Bechtel, Troy , Missouri

I'll be honest, I was just turned on to John about three years ago. I've dug the likes of Kristofferson,Coe, Nelson etc. forever but somehow overlooked John Prine. What a mistake!!! Especially being a writer and someone who thought he knew so much about music. It was humbling. Now on the flipside,I 'm like a kid at a candy store because now it seems like my favorite writer (John Prine) puts out a new C.D. every three months as I continue to build my rapidly growing collection. Thank you D for popping "Sam Stone" in the disc player driving across Alaska, Thanks to this sight and all involved for helping me to learn more and Thank you John for giving me a level of poetry which I'll never reach but will have a blast trying to. . "We lost Davey, in the Korean war,and I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore" Man, it don't get much deeper then that! ~ Yours truly, Thomas Cook Jr. A.k.a T.C.

Trust me, if we ever win the big one...waiting...I would have a preferred concert with John Prine and joining him would be Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen. Be still me heart. ~ do-dee-do

Good day eh... I taught my cockatiels, Morty, Pip & Gizmo, to sing John Prine... like they have a choice... they listen to him 16 hours a day...it would be 24 but I do have to work... they really do "let"s talk dirty in Hawaiian real good....any one in JP land also have birds?... I used to raise pigeons and my pigeon coop was called "Paradise Loft"...after guess who... no not the Guess Who from Winnipeg, Canada.... American Women was their claim but I have to go now my birds are going to sing "Dear Abby" ... in 3 part harmony. ~ old hippie

To all you prime Prine fans, I was fortunate enough to see John with Steve Goodman before he went to the big band in the sky, we were front row in Vancouver B.C.and it was the best concert I have ever been a part of,I say that because you felt like you really were a part of it! Thanx John its been the better part of 20 years and Ill never forget it,wish you would come back to the Great White North. ~ Randy Paul

I just want to tell him that his songs and train whistles make me happy, my husband died at the tender age of 43 last year, he was a locomotive engineer and (one) of his favorite songs was "New Train" we saw JP at his last concert here in Whitefish Montana on the Big Mountain.. "WOW" Sure is a big old goofy world, ain't it? I wish my husband and best friend Dale Atkinson could hear Johns new one, "Great Days" Reckon I just need to get this off my chest, Thanks ~Signed, A Big Old Goofy Girl still missing her Big Old Goofy Man

Saw and met John in Buffalo. He was so pleasant after the concert. Oh yeah the concert. It was excellent. So many nice old tunes mixed in with his newer stuff. Great back up on bass, guitar and vocals guys. Thanks for the autographs and for coming to Buffalo. Hope to see Prine and guests again soon. Played his music for some 20 years at my kitchen table and with friends at get togethers. ~ Kevin Barrett

I got to see John at the Adler theater in Davenport a few years ago. I've been a big fan of his since I first heard the Haystack album  thirty years ago. We met a few friends up there, and of course, John was as  wonderful as ever. Well, after we got back, I found out that the friends we met up there had gotten to go back stage to meet John. I seems that a roady  had taken a shine to one of my friends, and got her back. I couldn't believe  it. I'd turned these greenhorns on to John, and they get to go back and see  him. Talk about envious. I can only hope that some day I can be that lucky. ~ Luluwalls

Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that the houses Erik has been building are being taped for HGTV. A show called before and after. They have been documenting his progress over the past few months. He hid form the camera most of the time. But the last segment they taped he had no choice but to be right there in front of it. He actually made them stop taping so he could go to his truck and get his JP Shrine hat. Nothing like a little free advertising!! ~ Take Care,  Meghan & Erik

Yes, I've seen the John Prine Shrine! And yes, it is one of my favorites. I recently profiled John Prine on my radio show during a segment I call, "Under the Influence" where I profile an artist we play on our radio station, then play who that artist lists as influences. I found the site to be very helpful! I told everyone in my listening audience about the site as well. ~ Lori Rosendahl - Tuesday Breakfast Jam - KRCL 90.9 FM - Salt Lake City, UT

We saw John and Iris in Ames, Ia. on our 28th wedding anniv... Wow. Great show. Been John P. fans forever and this was well worth the 3 hr. drive. Come back soon, John, cause, "we ain't hurtin' nobody, we ain't hurtin' noone." ~ L. and S. from Fayette
