"Yes, Virginia, John Prine really does have internet fans"

January-February-March 2001

WE WANT JOHN PRINE IN IOWA!!! CENTRAL IOWA, STEPHANS AUDITORIUM!!! LET'S GET HIM HERE IN 2001!!!!! ~JO

I grew up listening to John Prine. I grew up in a little town in North Florida always wanted to tour the Green River and live in Paradise when I grew up. I now live in Louisville, married to a man who has relatives in Russellville, and my father in law who is deceased lived in Horsebranch, Kentucky. Last week my husband was down in the "use to be", Paradise and took some great pictures of the old building the "Airdrie Building" where the prisioners were housed while they were building the prison in Eddieville. If anyone has pictures to share from the paraside area please send I will be glad to share ours. And until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand. ~Sean and Peggy Sue.

I'm sucha fan of John Prine's --ever since the '70's w/ your flag Decal and the Illegal smile and "Eat alot of Peaches" (I sang that to the boys all the time---now at Christmas my 27 yr old gave me the John Prine "John Prine" CD and I couldn't have been more thrilled!!!!) ~ Thank you, Mona

Dear John Before I get back to drowning my shamrock - I just want to comment on how I got hooked on your music.  My younger brother - still a teenager - and very much into his dance music also - asked me along to the concert you held in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland, towards the end of last year. I must admit, I hadn't heard of you before - but as he asked for my credit card details and bought two tickets - I thought I'd best go as I'd paid for it!!  I enjoyed the concert but still wasn't hooked on the music. It wasn't until my brother bought the CD - Anthology - which he loaned to me one evening that - that it dawned on me how damn good this music was. I have since been smitten - made my own CD with my favourite extracts from Anthology (I'll send you the copyright infringement fee if you come to Ireland again!!) This music has since brought me a lot of pleasure: relieves stress when I'm stressed; changes my mood when I'm blue and makes me feel damned good when I'm winning! Thank you for your music - Please come to Ireland again ASAP !! ~Kind regards  James Dohert Northern Ireland

My suggestion to you.......Keep it up. This is a wonderful website and no matter whereor how I am, it's like coming home. It's a nice feeling knowing that the Shrine is always there and up to date. That's quite a feat and you should be very proud of your work (so should John!). I'm sure it 's a hell of alot of work and I for one am thankful to you. That's all I wanted to say. ~Zoomcat

When the hell is he coming to Las Vegas! ~Steven

Hey- Just wanted to stop in and say.... I'm so tckled to see my words about John posted among your qutables. Who knows how they found you, but they're heart felt and the whole thing is a smile. It's nice to think that he might read what I had to say about him. Never figured he would, but hey. I've thought a lot about this guy over the years. Anyway, thanks for it. ~Tim Robinson (folk singer/ songwriter from NY)

Does he have something against New York and the surrounding areas?  Not ONCE have I seen any part of the tri state area mentioned as part of his concert schedule ~Pamela Danzig

PLEASE COME TO NEW YORK CITY!!! I REALLY WANT TO SEE YOU IN CONCERT! ~Julia

In the past the city of Boise Idaho has been blessed with a John Prine concert or  two... His fan base here is big....The man is a true Ambassador of good times... His music is a endless source of smiles and warmth. Please ask his promoters to see if they can fit Boise in again..Just a fan......................~John E. Clifford

Just wanted to thank you so much for keeping me updated on the tours. I'm a second generation Prine fan and we're so grateful to be kept informed. (We missed him last time around, didn't find out till too late. ugh!) I was ecstatic when you finally listed a Texas concert date.  Thanks for keeping us all informed! ~Kandis Seaver

I was lucky! A friend and I were trying to snake in Reed Green on the USM Campus in Hattiesburg Ms. to see the show we were young and didn't have the money are would gladly paid . WE had given up and were leaning on the fence looking at the building John was fixing to play when this guy comes up and says what's wrong with ya'll we tell him no money. He said come with me, he took us through the back stage way and set us on the front row. He was Johns drummer. WE did not get to meet John but that was the best concert I have ever seen. There were just a handful of people there but this has been a long time ago. George Curry Hattiesburg Mississippi

I first heard John right after I got out of the army. Really It was a guy with one leg, and he had three girls living with him. He told one of the girls to get his guitar. He started playin', and I said Did you right this stuff. I think the first song was Dear Abbey. We were waiting for some " smoke" to come in, and every song he did was just cool as hell. I've learned just about every song by him, and now people ask me, did you write that. I say no, the greatest song writer in the world wrote it. JOHN PRINE. It seems like everytime he comes out with a new song, it's right where my mind is. From a fan from the 70's. The Old HIPPIE. You are GREAT. Thanks man. If you are ever around Statesville NC, stop by and we'll jam, well you can jam, I'll just sit there stunned.

PLEASE COME TO STRAWBERRY THIS YEAR YOU WILL BE IN OREGON ON THE 31ST TRAVELING ON DOWN MY WAY TO SARATOGA!!!!!  THAT'S GREAT BUT YOU KNOW YOU ARE TRULY ADMIRED BY THE STRAWBERRY PEOPLE!!! SEE IF YOU COULD AT LEAST COME VISIT SUNDAY NIGHT YOU'LL HAVE 5 DAYS BEFORE YOU PERFORM IN SARATOGA WHICH I WILL BE THERE!!!!! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU AT STRAWBERRY!!!! But I am definitley looking forward to your show in Saratoga. It will be so nice to be close to you!!! The show will be so personal and true to the ones who love you the most!! Good luck on your tour and I will be seeing you soon!! I love you and can't wait to see you in Saratoga California!!!! ~lOVE always, Brienne & Jarrod

Prine should come to Wilmington NC. Thalian Hall is a historic hall in the riverfront area of downtown Wilmington which would be perfect for a Prine performance. Hope to see em in Savannah next month. Wilmington is similar to Savannah. ~ See ya Charles Scaff

There is a popular beer commercial on TV up here called...I'm Joe and I'm a Canadian....... he just rants about how great Canada is...the Canadians in the group have probably seen it.... this is where I stole the idea for the following... I am Leonard and I'm a John Prine fan. I will fly half way across this country to see John sing 4 songs. I do hang around record stores waiting for a new release. I don't mind "John who?" I really do still have his LPs. My friends must listen to JP when they come over and yes there is no talking allowed unless it's between tracks. I surely do own a pink Cadillac, a dinky toy. I do know most of his songs by heart and damn proud of it. I will try to convert you to be a Prinester and if you don't get it right I will wonder about you. Yes I really do own a blue umbrella. I do have a Prine tune playing in my head most of the time. When I'm not thinking about John I'm not thinking. I am Leonard and I'm a John Prine fan. ~ Leonard Hogg

My first JP concert was in 1999 when he performed at Oaks Park here in Portland. I had discovered him only 6 months prior to the concert. I heard "Souveniers" on KINK FM and then bought the John Prine Great Days CD. The CD sounded great and I loved all the pictures. But I was a little apprehensive about attending the concert. I figured it would be like seeing a concert of your favorite 60's Rock band after all these years have past. You know, they're all up on stage with their canes and walkers, wheezing out their songs just on the verge of physical collapse... MAN WAS I WRONG !!! GEEZ!! John Prine was incredible! His voice did sound different but I soon learned about his cancer surgery. I love the way he sounds now! Anyway, what an evening it was! And what a wonderful memory. My wife and I have become "official" John Prine fans and have been WAITING for his return to Oregon! The August concert at the Zoo will be great!! ~Wingnut

Last year Prime Prine himself was supposed to grace the stage at Riverfest but they were afraid he might get struck by lightning during one of our earlier summer thunder-boomers. Anyway, Prine bailed but the half-hundred hardcore fans like myself who decided to brave the weather had a great time singing JP classics while taking refuge from the fury under a bridge. I remember having a good time but my girlfriend was really pissed the next morning, something about drinking out of paper bags with "God knows who". Anyway, hope he makes it this year. If it rains again we'll just hang out in the lobby of his hotel until either 1) he comes down and sings, plays, jokes, and drinks with us from our paper bag or 2) we raise enough hell that the federales are called and were all hauled off to the pokey. Either way I'll have a story for my grandkids one day. I just hope it doesn't have to be about my one-night in prison tattoo. ~Captain

thanks I'm a great fan first saw him when he played at the White house he sang green river mulenburg county been craving his music ever since ~David Bean

Please let us know if John Prine will be at the Lex. Opera House this year. We were second row back last time he came (I was the breast cancer survivor in the wig - I'm sure you remember me) However, John Prine has inspired me and given me courage to do something I have always wanted to do. I have been able to play piano and guitar and sing since I was 15 (now 44) and have written some original stuff too. I am performing at very casual places like coffeehouses and restaurants and enjoying every minute of it. I give John Prine and his music a lot of credit for bringing me out of the music closet. I was always too stage shy to even try it, but sitting there in a wig because of chemo watching John Prine sing after recovering from cancer also touched me in some way and gave me courage. ~ Thank you, Peggy Cunningham

I was just watching Bob Dylan's MTV unplugged and it just dawned on me how come John Prine ain't done this. I have most of his records but nothing on video. I can vaguely remember him doing a TV series for the Heffernan brothers in the early 80,s in Ireland at least I think it was him, no matter John Prine unplugged for me would be just right and you would never know if he released it in the US he might be popular there as well. I live in hope ~john
thanks for running the JP web site. I am learning the guitar and bought much of his sheet music to play his songs, but the guitar tabs on your web site are very useful because the whole song is on one page and I don't have to keep turning the pages while playing. I've been a big fan of john Prine for a long time, so it is great to find others that like him as much as I do. have a great day! ~ Brian

My favorite Christmas present this year (and I got tons of them) was Johnny's new Souvenirs CD!!!! ~DezyRN

As a child, like all boys in the Midwest, I wanted, prayed for and got a BB gun for Christmas. Lost for years, I have always felt, "robbed" for whoever has it, cannot know or feel the way I feel about that, "souvenir." Now, Christmas 2000, a wife, two kids and having reached 47 years old, I got a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas! I look at it, not as a possession but a memory I can touch. I thank John Prine for telling my story, over and over. My even bigger memory, will be when I hear him sing, "Souvenirs" live. ~ Roger Saxton

I'm so glad I found this site! I'm 31 and I grew up with my dad playing me bedtime john Prine song's as a child such sweet memory's, I lost my dad to lung cancer back in 1988 but to this day when I listen to paradise I can see him sitting in his chair with his guitar in lap head cocked to the side singing to me. this site is truly a blessing. thank you! Carmon d Coonfield from okc ok

I've only missed one JP show at Wolf Trap in all the years he's played there, and that was because my parents wouldn't pull over and let me out as we drove by. I first got turned on to John when I was a whitewater river guide on the Shenandoah River. He is ALWAYS awesome at Wolf Trap, and it's a cool place to go. We live in West Virginia and trek down (it's only about a 90 minute drive) and go no matter what day of the week he plays. Vienna is a VERY hoity-toity place, but since you can bring in your coolers, we always bring bottles of MD 20-20 (in the square bottle) to pass while they're drinking their chardonnay. When Iris came out, I nearly had an accident in my pants; I thought it might be his wife when he was doing the introductions. Iris has opened for him at least once down there. I didn't care for that Richard Thompson who opened for him; I told everyone I didn't realize Warren Zevon was opening!!! All in all, a fabulous show, as always, and I just keep turning more and more people on to him. Another good thing about Wolf Trap is the price for lawn seats. Always $17 or $18. We really wanted to go see him last year at the Birchmere, especially since it was over my birthday, but $35 was WAY too salty for our blood. Then I didn't find out about Morgantown until it was too late, which was a real bummer since I'm a WVU alumnus. ~ Ethel

My story is that I am from Muhlenberg County that the song Paradise was written about. It has put our county on the map. I got to meet John Prine at the annual Everly Brothers Festival in Central City , Kentucky a few years back . I didnt realize how much of an impact John has made on the music industry. Great guy with great songs! ~ Ann Lewis

My wife and I were at the Dec.8 show at the Ala. Theatre in B'ham. Todd Snider played for an hour and obviously had a lot of fans present. John, Jason, and Dick played for the next two hours. John soloed on five songs, was joined by Iris Dement for five, did an encore with his wife Fiona, another with Iris, and another with everybody mentioned above. I block everything else out when I'm listening to John Prine. He has a way of reaching inside and taking hold of your soul. I'm sure J.P. fans know what I mean. Anyway, after a great show, I talked my wife into walking around back in hopes of getting an autograph. Couldn't believe what happened next! I got my picture made with Todd, then with Iris, then with John himself and three friends I didn't even know I had until after the concert. John signed my t-shirt and ticket stub, and he wasn't in a hurry. He always writes 'Thank You' in front of his name. As if he owes us any more. Meant a lot to me. Gave him a Buckeye for health and luck and told him thank you. Had to tell somebody about this great experience. Thanks for listening cause Everybody needs somebody that they can talk to. ~ Alabama Wood

Am I missing something. Prine hasn't been to St Louis for quite sometime and I miss him. He used to come here often, but for some reason, he just keeps missing us. As one of the biggest inspirations musically in my life in regard to my personal guitar playing and performing (just turned on several new people to John last weekend who couldn't wait to ask me who wrote those songs I was playing) I am sad that he hasn't been here for a while. Anybody out there know why? Thanks ~ Beth W

I'm 25 years old, I live in Tromsoe Norway, heard Prine the first time in 1991 and became his biggest fan, I have all of his record's from the JOHN PRINE album to the newest re-recorded SOUVENIRS. I also play guitar and picks, Prine's song several day's a week. I know about 40 of his songs in my head (the lyrics). My biggest wish is to have you to say hello to him from me and let him know that his music has been a guide for my music interest and I can't imagine the country/folk music without him. ~ Tony Andre Jensen

Thanks for your help, now it really makes sense. Telemark is a county in the south of Norway where I have lived as a singer songwriter-street musician for the last 20 years. John along with Townes, Guy Clark, Iris dement has always been a sort of Guru for me with regard to my writing. The art of keeping things simple yet so to the point is where its at. I ran a folk club in England before moving here and I cant thank an unknown singer for introducing me to Hallo in there, my biggest pleasure each summer is meeting another street singer and having a picking session just exchanging johns songs for a couple of hours over a few beers. I hope I get to see the man himself live one day! Regards to you all and be lucky ~ Mick T.

MY BOYFRIEND A VIETNAM VET POSTAL WORKER HAS HELD ON TO LIVING THANKS TO JOHN PRINE - HE'S LISTENED TO PRINE'S MUSIC FOR YEARS - RICK WOULD HAVE BEEN SAM STONE - HE RELATES TO THE LYRICS AND HAS SHARED THIS HAUNTING REALIZATION WITH HIS VIETNAM BUDDY AND ME. RICK AND I EXPERIENCED JOHN'S CONCERT IN BUFFALO THIS PAST FALL - RICK SMILED THE WHOLE TIME AND I REALLY FELT THE IMPACT PRINE'S MUSIC HAS ON VETS. RICK'S BUDDY JERRY MET JOHN PRINE IN VERMONT AT THE "CONCERT FOR A LANDMINE FREE WORLD" - JERRY BOUGHT A SCARF AND JOHN PRINE SIGNED A VERY PERSONAL NOTE ON IT WHICH READS "FOR RICK FROM ONE MAILMAN TO ANOTHER! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN THE 101ST_ YOUR PAL JOHN PRINE" JERRY (ALSO A VIETNAM VETERAN POSTAL WORKER) SENT THE SCARF AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR RICK. RICK WAS OVERWHELMED BY THE GESTURE OF HIS FRIEND AND THE GENEROSITY OF JOHN PRINE'S WRITTEN WORDS. RICK'S SPIRITS WERE LIFTED AND CHRISTMAS 2000 IS ONE HE WILL CHERISH. THANK YOU JOHN PRINE FOR REACHING RICK AND SO MANY OTHER VETS - YOU ARE A LIGHT WHICH GIVES VETS PEACE, HOPE AND RESPECT. THANK YOU ~ DEBBIE LICHT -
