This page is where I keep the really good letters . . .
"Yes, Virginia, John Prine really does have internet fans"

April - May 2001

Get JP to tour with Tom Russell and Iris DeMent and bring that show to the Midwest. Let both those guys harmonize with her great voice, then let her do her own stuff so folks see she can hold her own with the best. I'd quit my job to become booking agent for that!  ~Bob Poore, Chicago

The first song I ever heard was Souvenir's and I was hooked because a Good Friend taped it years ago for me and I did not know who it was. I later discovered John and have been a great fan since. The best song writer of all. Later I became a good fan of Steve Earle Excellent song writer and performer. Don't you agree? GREAT!!!! BUT NO JOHN PRINE!!! Please do not get me wrong. I love them both. But John gets my soul like no other. What a brilliant Man.  ~Peter Gall, Sarnia ON. Canada

HI We really want John to come back to Iowa.. I don't see him anywhere on the the tour list for this year... Is this not an option?? My son was 6 when he 1st saw Prine in action at Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa. He is now 7 & wants him back. He listens to your songs more than "the backstreet boys" or "insync", that's big stuff for a little kid! He goes to school & kids say "John who"!! Anyway we would really love it if you continued your tour here in Iowa. Thanks for your songs & your sense of humor. ~Jenny & son, Ames, IA 50010

There was always two things that I wanted to accomplish in my life, and one was to See John Prine, and the other was David Allen Coe, and I have managed to accomplish them now. I would Love to meet John Prine in Person, that would only be my other fulfillment in life, and I know someday i will...I have faith in that...I have Loved him half my life and the other half I didn't know about him...so these have been my best years, and the best is yet to come.....Thank you John for being part of my everyday music...John...Please don't ever quit making such wonderful Music...we love you here, and we always will... ~Jeri Blumenstein, WI

I first met John about 25 years ago in Nashville. I know, I'm telling my age now. Oh well, I have no pride! Any way ,I had the privilege of getting to know John through Rachel. He invited me to Several of his concerts, which I wouldn't have missed for the world. One of the best times I had with him was in Central City when he played with the Everly Brothers. Then we went for a boat ride on Lake Malone with the Mayor. Another time he called me and told me was going to be in Evansville, In. with Arlo Guthrie and asked me how many tickets I would like to have. I told him I needed about 250 for my closest friends!! Ha! Ha! Kidding! They already had tickets! But after the concert, he invited all of them to join us for drinks at the Time Out Bar. That made their day, because John sat there and talked to every one of them like he had known them forever! That is something that they will never forget and something that I will remember for the rest of my life!!! Thanks John !! I! could tell more stories about the times I have shared with John Prine , but I am saving them for my book!! Kidding!! Keep up the good work John!! Hope your family is doing good. Stay Healthy!! ~ Love, Love, Love  D. Hope Hon, Carmi, Ill.

John Prine is to folk Music what Ira Louvin was to country. I would like to take his lyrics and mine and twist em like a vine.  "We love you" ~Tracy D Lowe

here's another Prine story for ya: I'm working in a level 4 maximum security prison sitting in a chair not allowed to take my eyes off this particular prisoner cuz he's on suicide watch and the whole cell block is really noisy and belligerent saying things like "hey officer Reiber, come suck my dick" and shit like that It is Christmas day and one of the roughest days of the year in prison and I had been on that suicide watch for about 4 hours and was bored as hell I said, "if youll all shut your mouths I'll sing ya a couple prison songs. Lots of heckling and filthy language followed but when I started to sing jp's "Christmas in Prison" followed up by Lucinda Williams "Concrete and Barbed Wire" it was the first time I had ever heard the entire cell block silent. What the hell, it was Christmas they deserved to hear something different. I left that job about 6 months later cuz i felt like i was on the wrong side but I will never forget those big tough guys shutting their mouths and listening to those songs on Christmas day and thanking me afterwards ~ catlee

freaking wicked man i listen to prine only especially in the camp with the boy when we are on the beer you cant beat good old jonny  ~dave bartlett, newfoundland

I am 30 years old, I was raised with the music of John Prine hanging in the air. I did not understand the meaning to many of his lyrics but loved them the same. Throughout the years of hardships and blessings that I went through, I understood more and more what life was really about through John's words. As Stephen King says in his book about writing, "You have to tell the truth". And that is just what John does. He tells it like it is whether you like it or not. My dream was to see this man in concert. I wanted to see his face as he sang each song. It took me 30 years but I finally got to see him. I was not disappointed! And to top it off...My daughters 10, 8 and 7 now sing his lyrics and know them by heart! They love his music and they too will learn what it all means someday. Thank you John for sharing your life with us, we have learned from your mistakes and your rewards. ~Your fan and friend, Angela, Tennessee

The 1st song my father ever taught me to sing completely was "That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round." I was about 4 years old, I'm guessing! I remember giggling uncontrollably ever time we sang, "...sitting in the bathtub, counting my toes!" Although some Prine songs might be considered somewhat inappropriate for young children, *wink*, those songs were a part of an intense bond with my father! At 4 years old, I and my father eagerly awaited my 18th birthday so I could see John Prine perform (since he played primarily in clubs). I am aware of the reasons why John stopped touring for awhile. Nevertheless, I am now 25 years old... and I still anticipate the day John plays in my area (Baton Rouge/New Orleans/Dallas). Just wanted to reinforce how many "younger" J.P. fans are out here... Thanks!!!  ~Shelley D. Foster

Dear John, I'm not certain that this is the most direct way to reach you, but I do have a connection with your music that, if this is passed along, you might find unusual and amusing. A friend recently played for me your delightful song about the decal falling out of the Reader's Digest. It simply blew me away because of the fact that I worked for the Reader's Digest for 25 years and in my first few months with that august organization I had a "decal" experience that equaled your song.
In 1968 when I got one of my first pay checks, I noticed that the envelop contained a decal of the American Flag. Being a reasonably liberal sort at the time I didn't pay it much attention. Then two weeks later I got my next check and surprise, it contained another decal. I asked around and, after some detective work, discovered that only those RD citizens who had not put a decal flag on their car windshield in the parking lot were issued second decals in their pay checks. I felt as though big brother had struck me in my heart. I loved my job but the notion that the Wallaces (who owned the company) were dictating my politics cause me pain. My wife, who paid the bills, wanted to find a peaceful way to resolve this issue and was not interested in my taking a stand which would threaten our pleasant lifestyle. This clever woman found a "small" American flag decal with two gigantic dove's wings on either side which meant I could fulfill my Reader's Digest duty and still make a statement of my own. It was placed with pride on the windshield of my VW bus (no flowers) and I was happy to note that I did not have anything in my next pay check but a check.
The person who sang this marvelous "decal" song to me is unavailable and I have looked in vain for the lyrics. Should you get this note and have the means to communicate with me, I would love to have the words and I might even attempt to strum it in my now spare time.  ~ James G. Stewart

I am far from the most technical guy in the world but I had to send this e-mail. Friday night John performedn here in my home town and WOW!!! Living where i do you dont get many chances to see a living legend, especially one who can hold an audience for 2 hours with a 3 piece combo.  I just want to say thanks for a great show and a lifetime of music that will always be eternally referred to as true quality stuff with meaning.  One minute you chuckle, the next your kind of choked. A true gentleman performer in every sense of the word.  Thanks again from all in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
p.s. two things,
1) Please come back and could you bring along John Hiatt and Bonnie Raitt? O.K., I know its not likely but a guy can dream cant he? ~ David Wedow, Thunder Bay, Ontario

I recently fulfilled a long standing desire to see "JP" in concert. I had an opportunity to see him in Minneapolis in 1993 but missed out. I feared I had missed my chance since the city in which I reside is kind of "out of the way", what being 350 miles north of the Twin Cities. Lo and behold, who should be stopping off in Thunder Bay on his recent tour! Well needless to say the show was great, John was still hobbled by his recent hip replacement surgery, but even on one leg the "olde" man still kicked ass!! The best was yet to come though, as I made my way to my vehicle after the show I recognized John's personal guitar "valet" outside the loading dock having a butt and a beer after the show. I approached him and inquired if it would be possible to met JP and maybe have him sign my Sweet Revenge album cover that I had in the van. He said that JP was having a bite after the show, but that if I could hang tight for 30 minutes that it shouldn't be a problem. After sitting in my van for 15 minutes or so I got out and waited by the stage doors. The before mentioned guitar valet reappeared and took me inside to where the boy's were winding down after the show. I then got to meet the "man" himself, what a thrill! he was great, signed my album cover and happily added a autograph for my older brother who lives in New York. (Thanks Davey for turning me on to JP's music all those years ago) I didn't want to be a pain and overstay my welcome, but o how I wish I could have sat! down and had a brew and shot the shit with JP! Like the lyrics "I had no idea what a good time was called, til last night when I sat and talked with you" Thanks John for all my "memories", and hopefully maybe that beer can wait until your next visit to the "Bay" ~ Andy Peloza, Ontario

My teenage daughter and I went to the concert in Milwaukee last night. Todd Snyder was great, loved his guitar playing and he writes some clever and funny songs. John, Jason and Dave were fantastic. Every song was a jewel. I didn't want the show to end. My daughter, Molly, got into it too. It was the best. I posted a more detailed note on the Wisconsin tour "board" so I won't be redundant here. I'm so glad to be able to visit this web site-no need to to explain, "John who?" We met Reeda, the webmistress which was fun! Thanks for this site, Reeda!  ~ Peace, Carol, WI

I've just come to live in Sydney , Australia and I was wondering does the great man have any plans to tour this part of the world? It would the blue sky even bluer  ~ sean haughian, Sydney, Australia
