by Reeda Buresh, webmistress of the John Prine Shrine http://www.jpshrine.org |
He tells a story about being drafted in 1966 and believing for a moment that since he was in the same line as the 4' 8" 500 pound guy that maybe he was going to get sent home. No such luck, he was labeled a mechanical genius which resulted in a buried army bulldozer. "Because in the Army having one bulldozer too many is as bad as missing one." That experience inspired the second verse of "Fish and Whistle" that he had a tough time keeping the hoarse out of the boat on. John shook his head with a boyish grin and continued. "I just spent the last week in Muhlenberg County at the Hamm-Prine family reunion where my parents were distant cousins (insert uproar of laughter here)- that is how I blew out my voice." He nods and begins "Grandpa was a Carpenter" and the gravel in his throat is being paved into a smoother road.
Out from the wings arrives another hot cup of tea and honey, John takes a sip, laughs, shakes his head "I have honey on my fingers" he continues that along with the family reunion straining his voice he has just spent a week in the studio to add more tracks to his upcoming new album.
Prine introduces the next song and it's official. I'm Just Getting By. This new song is definitely one of my favorites. the melody, the words and especially the oooh oooh aaaiiii IIII'm taking a walk verse. It's melody is a bit haunting and just Prine pretty...
There's a girl in the white house
I don't even know her name
Her disheveled appearance
Speaks volumes of shame
Well, you'll have to buy the album. His voice is getting better and almost sounds normal now. Every once in a while it would give out for a few words, and became hardly noticeable. Our friends the Prine concert virgins don't notice anything, Jessica and Mark were just as mesmerized as the rest of the crowd. John gulps down more tea, "We're going to play this like a baseball game, it's the top of the fourth and if my voice gives out before I do, we'll have to play a rain date". He recounts that "This next song is what you play if you are invited to your ex's wedding.and asked to play" All the Best and right into Angel From Montgomery - for Bonnie Raitt.and Sue Tedeschi
Dave Jacques and Jason Wilber leave Prine alone on stage for his legendary acoustic solo set. He promptly serves up You got Gold and then presents us with another new song (this one is my favorite too). In what seems to be typical Prine fashion, he begins to sing, without introduction - so for reference sake I'll call it "That town'll make you crazy" or "Crazy as a Loon" oh hell, That Town'll Make You Crazy As A Loon about hopes and dreams and thinking they've been realized only to find they're really not what they seem. I've now heard it a couple of times and it tends to make me want to reevaluate what is really important in life.
