Terry, (my webmister) and I finished up our sandwiches
and crossed
the river and to the East Peoria hotel. We could hear voices in the atrium
area and wandered in to see some familiar and unfamiliar Prine Shriners. There was a small crowd
and our
gracious host and new found cousin. Mike Winters. Nice guy,
with that familiar Chicago accent and big burly smile. It felt like old
home week with this gathering of new faces. The next few hours was spent
meeting more Prine folks and I took notes on some names,
because I will never remember them all - except RAY COOPER and his wife
Kay (grin) - There was Ed and Marsha Jackson, Marty and Kimmie Sue, Lyla,
Nancy, Spin, little Margaret, two more little girls, many more big girls -
and lots of men with guitars. We gathered in the empty bar and chatted
about Prine, his songs, the concert, suddenly being related and our
anticipation of the night's show. We played with
the Mardi Gras tokens, and somehow got RAY COOPER up on the bar (the man
is about 6' 5") reaching way above his head to a glass shelf that had
a whole bunch more of these tokens. Ray started flipping them off the
shelf and they landed, kerplunk, tinkle, rattle on the stone floor. It
made a ruckus, enough to bring the hotel manager to our area to tell us
that we weren't allowed behind the bar, much less on top of it. Okay, so
it was kind of silly, but the place was totally emptied out. no booze no
nothing in the bar but bar, tables and chairs. We were nice, we obliged
her, Ray's cheeks were red, and the matter was done. So we thought.
Within
minutes 2 of Peoria's finest were in our faces scolding us. We apologized, they got a little
testy I guess because they must have been looking for
some excitement too. (my husband says
that they had shoulder patches that said "graduates from Ames"
(read the Ames review to get it) By the way - Marsha started it, she
wanted to see the other tokens. I still have mine... "Token of Youth
and Beauty" - man I hope it helps.
