Jim serenading the Prine Shriners

Pat McLaughlin

To save the day, Jim pulled out his guitar and serenaded us into a Prine
mood. He was great and it was exactly what was needed - listening to some
priming on some Prine
songs with our new "cousins" as we readied ourselves for the
show.
We arrived at the Civic Center about 7:30 - Ahhhhhhh, it was almost time.
Down went the lights, and surprisingly enough, a hush went over the
crowd. Pat McLaughlin entered stage left, a cohort of Prine's - they wrote
Daddy's Little Pumpkin along
with several of John's newest tunes together. Pat's music is just
wonderful from blues to bluegrass, and even better than hearing him is
watching him play, I have no other way to describe it than a controlled,
pickin' and grinning Joe Cocker style to it. He has these voluntary limb
movements, not the kind that drive you nuts to watch, but the kind that
makes you want to get up and join him. You just need to see and hear
this man to understand just how truly talented he is. His set consisted of
9 absolutely fabulous songs that I hope are on a CD somewhere. Pat says he
is from the Waterloo Iowa area and apologized to his first girlfriend in
kindergarten, who might be in the audience that he was not too proud of
some of the things he had done. His setlist was as follows - I have no
idea what the real titles are, feel free to contact and correct me.
1. This old guitar? You can't take that from me?
2. Tiny Town, Little Child?
3. Julia?
4. Sure ain't no friendly bird
6. I might not? Kickin in your storm?
7. Bop and Weave? Now Look at You?
8. Baby ain't got no home
and he was done. with a wave he walked off. we stood and clapped for
an encore and in an instant he was back out. "Opening acts can't play
hard to get" he said. And he shared one more tune with us.
9. It's All Right To Be A Redneck.
I can see why
John likes to tour and write with him. All I could think of, is why isn't this man more well known, he is a
treasure by himself, songs full of humor, pain and wisdom. Prine really
has the cream of the crop when he has an opener. I'd call Pat, a whole
gallon of sweet cream. If you get the chance to catch his show anywhere, I
promise you won't regret it.
