John Prine played a great gig at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall stage of his UK tour on Tuesday November First. John and his band received a standing ovation from the audience. Support act was Mindy Smith.

  John Prine says he worked out a long time ago that the best way to take the gruffness out of his voice was to add a girl singer. Prine's voice is plenty gruff these days, but his audience wouldn't have him any other way and the straight-up philosophy of his songs just wouldn't sound right without all that gravel.
  Which is no excuse not to invite his support act, Mindy Smith, to join him. As Smith has shown on previous visits to Glasgow and underlined on her opening spot here, she has just the right amount of honey to complement Prine on songs such as In Spite of Ourselves. Following in Bonnie Raitt's footsteps in duetting with Prine on Angel from Montgomery isn't too much to ask of someone whose dark take on Jolene has Dolly Parton's backing-vocal seal of approval either.
  Prine is enjoying a golden period these days, as the near-capacity Royal Concert Hall audience confirms, and he's clearly enjoying sharing his songs and stories with so many people. His between-song chat is as succinctly wry as his lyric-writing style. 
  When he wrote The Glory of True Love he had his wife in mind – and hoped his co-writer didn't. Later, as his spot-on guitarist and bassist take a well-earned break, he mirthfully recalls the disappointment of discovering the actual lyrics to Fats Domino songs as opposed to his interpretation from the radio.
  Fans have sometimes misinterpreted what Prine's been singing, too, but tonight his observations on the American way of life, problem-page letters and terminal dreamers come through gruff but clear. The man's a treasure.

Saw the man in Glasgow. I flew to Glasgow from the Outer Hebrides in the North West of Scotland. Got off the plane, went to pick up my bag and guess who was picking his bag up at the next carousel - John Prine! The concert was wonderful with JP on top form, and very ably assisted by that wonderful songstress, Mindy Smith. George Murray, Stornoway, Scotland

It took John a long time to get to Glasgow (that marvellous gig at the Old Fruitmarket). A couple of years ago he stole the show in fantastic company at the concert for a landmine-free world. This week he sold out the Royal Concert Hall and played a lovely concert to a delighted audience. Songs from the new album were as strong as old favourites and he had the audience in the palm of his hand. Glasgow loves you, John. Haste ye back.

It was my first John Prine concert and it was absolutley brilliant. I had decided after Neil Young and Crazy Horse came to Glasgow that my concert going days were over - Neil was brilliant in his short acoustic set, but Crazy Horse had blood coming out my ears. I have seen Pink Floyd in their prime and I realised you have to be in your prime also to appreciate the volume. I was a bit worried JP might prove too loud but he was spot on in everything he did with excellent muscians and Mindy Smith - what a voice! Well done John. Haste ye back!

Best concert I've been to all year. I've never seen so many over 40's so excited (since they invented Viagra) , and that was before the concert. The city bars were buzzing after it. Something old, something new, nothing borrowed and some things a bit blue A great night with a great guy Paul

Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Scotland, 1 November 2005. As always John played a blinding set with two of the best country musicians currently playing. The addition of John's electric guitar leant a rockier feel to a number of songs with Lucky Larue a particular blinder. We were treated to two hours of sublime music from solo acoustic songs to electric country rock. On the last few tours here the set list was fairly similar but this time there were some old favourites as well as most of the new album. A fantastic way to pass two hours of your life!

The great man was superb. Highlights for me were Angel from Montgomery with Mindy Smith, Sam Stone, In Spite of Ourselves with Mindy Smith and Dear Abby.......but it was all a masterclass. Every song a gem from his first album onwards............ One day I'll get to hear him sing 'Goofy World' !

so john prine for the first time live here in glasgow. first part of show had mindy smith and a mandolin player, great version of joleen. john did a 2 hour set with stuff from his new album, as well as old stuff. john told some good stories between song....he's a funny guy. great gig, he looked as if he could play all night.

Every concert is the same......just incredible value for money. Song after song.......does the man ever get tired? Sound quality in the hall was outstanding.

Just saw John for the first time last night. I thought he was fantastic, and the old songs were as close to studio recordings as they can be. Always a good sign of great artist, to me at least. I have not bought the latest album yet, but that will soon be rectified after hearing some of the songs last night. He is such a clever song writer and some of the lines are funny and meaningfull at the same time. Excellent. Hurry back John

Like so many other reviewers , I've been buying John's music since the early 70's , but had never seen him live until tonight. He was great , the band was great, and the old and new songs sat together like the best of friends. I so enjoyed "In spite of ourselves" I don't know whether John can comprehend how much his songs have helped us through life's difficulties - he sits at the very top of the tree along with Dylan in being able to let us know that we are not alone in our beliefs and humour, and that there's always someone out there we can relate to
