A very entertaining show in a nicely remodeled period auditorium. John Prine was just great and did a good mixture of old and new stuff. I was not real familiar with Iris Dement but will never forget her unique voice. She struck me as a blend of Dolly Parton (singing) and Steven Wright (talking)! John and Iris have a nice bit of chemistry and energy between them. Will definitely try to see them again sometime.

Iris DeMent opened the show with a 7 or 8 song set that was absolutely stunning. First 2 or 3 on acoustic guitar before switching to the piano to play songs from her upcoming Gospel record. Fine voice and great songwriting. After a 15 or so minute intermission, John Prine came out with his usual bass / acoustic guitar / electric guitar band set up. Went through songs with relative ease and efficiency. Hello In There, Sam Stone, All The Best, etc. All terrific. After fifteen or so songs, the bass player & side man on guitar left the stage and John carried it alone for 2 or 3 more. What followed was perhaps the real treat of the night though. Iris and John and band working through several of the songs from the In Spite Of Ourselves CD. Funny, heartfelt, great throughout. Iris bid another farewell and John continued on w/ a new one (Just Getting By) that was exceptional. Can't wait to hear the studio version. A minor tuning problem plagued Lake Marie, but John & co. made the most of it anyways. After a very brief exit, John & Iris and band came out to play two more. Overall, an outstanding show.
