April 30, 2004, was an incredible night at the Rose State Performing
Arts Center in Midwest City, Oklahoma! Todd opened the show in a suit
jacket and shoes with Can't Complain. At this point Todd went into his
introduction and some guy in the crowd yelled, for the second time,
"Take your shoes off."
Todd yelled right back, "Don't tell
me what to do, Okie!"
Then he played:
Horseshoe
Lake
Tillamook County
Trouble
DB Cooper
Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues
At this point in the show, Todd thanked Eric and Melanie Neill for the
flowers they had sent to him before the show started and wished Happy
Birthday to Melanie. Todd then brought out Jack Ingram to sing a song with
him especially for the Neill's. Todd and Jack sang "Working on a Fine
Tune" and it was great! Todd thanked everyone for coming out and then
did Alright Guy as an encore. Todd seemed in good spirits and told a few
short stories here and there throughout his set. He also made sure that
the crowd was aware that he'd be over at the Wormy Dog Saloon with Jack
later in the evening.
The amazing John Prine was up next and, as always, was spectacular.
John playing a lengthy set including:
Spanish Pipedream
Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore
Six O'clock News
Souvenirs
Fish & Whistle
Grandpa Was a Carpenter
Picture Show
I'm Just Getting By
All the Best
Angel from Montgomery
John
was left solo on the stage at this point and played:
You Got Gold Inside Of You
Donald and Lydia
Bottomless Lake
Dear Abby
That's the Way the World Goes Round
The Other Side of Town
During Sam Stone, the band rejoined John and they finished out the
evening with:
Bear Creek - a tribute to John and June Carter
That's Alright by Me
Ain't Hurtin' Nobody
Sins of Memphisto
Hello in There
Lake Marie
As an encore, John played:
Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone
He was then joined on stage by Todd and Jack Ingram to finish out the
evening with Paradise.
I was amazed that Jack was still there. He was supposed to start
playing at the Wormy Dog Saloon at 10:45 and a check of the time
showed it was almost 11:30.
After the show we headed over to the Wormy Dog Saloon and actually
managed to get there in time for the first song - Redneck Mother. Todd
rocked out with Jack and the Beat Up Ford Band until closing time! It was
obvious that Todd and Jack were really enjoyed being in town on the
same night and getting a chance to hang out and play some great music
together. Highlights of the evening included another round of Working on a
Fine Tune, Barbie Doll, Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line, Happy Birthday -
for Willie Nelson, and Alright Guy. Jack closed out his show with
Goodnight Moon.

I had a show in Oklahoma City a few weeks back and man, it was a good one. I found out that my good man, Todd Snider, was going to be in town on the same night opening a show for John Prine. I talked to Todd the day of the show and we figured out the master plan: I'd go over to the College theatre where his show was and sit in with him on a tune, then he'd come over to the roadhouse where I was playing and take over the rhythm guitar responsibilities in the beat up ford band for the evening. Not only did the plan take effect and work to perfection but John Prine decided to do me one better by inviting me up to play "Paradise" with him, his band and Mr. Snider. I even got to play John Prine's guitar. I have decided to begin drinking "Handsome John's" in honor of John Prine. A "Handsome John" is a drink that he made up in 1976. It is Vodka, Gingerale and a slice of lime twisted. I snuck in his dressing room to check things out (if something is gone from that evening I did not do it) and inspected the ingredients to the famous drink to make sure I had it right. I did.

By: quit yelling requests, thanks
i rolled into the theater about 8:20 with an "illegal smile" ready to post up with my wife and enjoy my first prine show. our first and only mistake of the evening was not being there for todd snider's entire set. i had no idea who he was and was definitely not prepared for the few songs i was fortunate enough to hear. this guy is special and for those reading this who are not
enligtened, consider yourself served. "alright guy" and "talking seattle grunge rock blues" are all you need to hear to get you started......on to john, he is amazing. there's my review. if he is in concert within 8 hours of you make the trip. he is a living his dream and it showed with every chord he strummed and every note he hit (or missed, doesn't matter). my personal favorite was "angel from montgomery", i almost had tears in my eyes, almost....my wife's favorite was "fish and whistle" and every other song he sang, just depends what day you catch her. she wasn't a big fan when we showed up but has been listening to john non-stop for the past week. same goes with todd snider....needless to say this wll not be our last john prine concert, i hope he makes it back to oklahoma soon as i will be bringing a convoy the next time he does. if not i guess i will be needing 8 hours worth of prine tunes to make the trip....john if you actually read these messages, you got gold man, thanks for bringing it to oklahoma city.

Traci in Oklahoma
John was Awesome. I was just so pleased to finally get to see him live. I was in St Petersburg Beach Florida a few years back and I left a week before he showed up and played at the Harp
and Thistle Pub. My Niece Angela went back when he was there and she asked John Prine for his autograph for her Aunt Traci. He was, she said, impressed she knew who he was and that's how I got his autograph on a beer stained coaster from the Harp and Thistle pub. The Show Friday Night was awesome. I went with my Big Brother and My Twin Sister and It was the best show we have seen in quite awhile. He still has it and we enjoyed it and enjoyed the New Arts Theatre. We Love John Prine in Oklahoma City I hope he felt the love and will be back soon.

Gas for a trip to Oklahoma City, OK = $30.00
Executive suite at the Westin = $160.
Watching John Prine bring down the house at Rose State College = Priceless,
John was in good humor and sounded wonderful. He played nonstop for almost three hours straight without a break. His voice was giving out a little at the end, but he brought out the boys for a jam session that the audience will not forget. The song selection for the concert was wonderful and included a tribute to Johnny Cash (awesome). The theater wasn’t the Brady Theater in Tulsa, but it was a great concert and the overall atmosphere was good. The audience was somewhat over zealous at times with requests for their favorite Prine tunes, but John humorously responded, “I know them all”. Way to go John! Nothing like a “Happy enchilada”.
Come see us in Tulsa sometime.
