Award-winning artist is in his Prine
Aug 15 2007
DOUBLE Grammy Award-winner John Prine will perform a gig at a Valleys theatre as part of his five-date UK tour.
He will be at the Parc & Dare Theatre in Treorchy as part of Rhondda Cynon Taf’s new season, Where Good Music Matters. As part of the series, a host of big names will be performing at intimate arts venues throughout the area. Prine’s concert on October 19 promises to be one of the highlights of the calendar. Prine was among the first of many artists pegged as the “new Dylan”, but his combination of folk, country and poetic but simple lyrics was completely his own.
Over the years, his songs have been covered by such artists as Joan Baez, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Laura Cantrell and Eddi Reader.
He has written a series of colourful, edgy tracks, dating back to the early ’70s, filled with humour, tragedy and everyday life in gritty reality.
In 2003, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting by BBC Radio 2 and that same year was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Before his fame, Prine, who is from Illinois, had a stint in the US Army in Germany and a job with the Post Office. He made his public debut at an open mic night in a local Illinois bar whose owner offered him a job.
After asking how long he’d have to play for, he went home and wrote the rest of what was to become his first self-titled album, and it wasn’t long before Kris Kristofferson saw him in concert which resulted in Prine gaining a national record label deal.
With eight albums now under his belt, he continues winning new fans who identify with his specially crafted music and lyrics.
Among the other performers who are taking part in the autumn music series are Ian Siegal Band, Karen Tweed & Roger Wilson, Jeffrey Foucault and Buddy Mondlock.
John Prine will appear at the Parc & Dare Theatre, Treorchy, on October 19 at 8pm. Tickets, priced £19.50 and £22.50 are available from the theatre box office on 01443 773112.
